  • Not a very good vintage, but a pretty good wine. Lacks the depth and complexity of the better vintages however.

  • Very nice. Candied cherry. Plenty of acidity and tannin structure that makes this wine lively. Some of that typical rioja funk blew off after the first hour and this wine mellowed nicely.

  • Beautiful wine -- oh so drinkable. Vanilla, clove, raspberry -- perfect balance ...

  • Light bodied and thin but an interesting quaff -- mushroom and damp floor with good acidity but and odd bite on the finish. I liked it but not for everyone.

  • Smells of slight alcohol & dates. Tastes of sweet cherries & earth. Medium Bodied. The wine was great at the open, but after an hour the wine went down hill, becoming a simple sweet cherry taste.

  • Another beauty from this producer, could use a few more years but tasty now, beautiful nose keeps improving as I drink it.

  • Austrian and Spanish Wines on the Fino patio (Fino Restaurant, Austin, Texas): Drank very well with lots of interesting fruit flavors, noticeable tannins and acid, and some balance. Most tasters thought it time to drink this wine up. It had notes of cola, cherry, candied red fruit, leather, cured meat, iron, cranberry, chokecherry, copper penny. In other words, classic Rioja to drink now.

  • Translucent garnet. Leather, tar, red fruits, and a hint of cranberry and rose petals. Tart red fruits, black cherry, and a slightly bitter finish. Yum+ again.

  • Translucent ruby. Tar, bright red fruits, some leather and pepper on the nose. Bright red fruits, a bit of mocha/coffee, and a slightly bitter finish - -i.e. consistent with past bottles. Very Yum!

  • Not the freshest bottle of this wine - more oxidative notes than I've found in other bottles. Still, great with dinner and carries all the LdH signatures. Terrific aged Rioja - cherries, lifted aromatics above an earthy/leathery base. Acidity and tannin in balance. Tough to find many wines with as much interest at this price point. Yum. (Though admittedly yummier when its a better bottle - them's the breaks with LdH)

  • My first Heredia, and all I have to say is... "why did I wait so long?!?" This was really enjoyable. Initially the nose was a bit closed, but after 20 minutes or so, it had a really nice and open nose of minerals, sweet cherries, and floral scents. Ruby colored, but relatively light on the palate, but alot of juicy acidity, and unobtrusive tannins (smoothe and fine, but just enough to frame the wine in nicely alongside the acidity). Flavors alternated between tart raspberries and dark sweet cherries, as well as some leather, earth, and mineral flavors. This wine is smooth and balanced, and although I don't drink alot of red Burgundy, this impresses me as having a feminine and Burgundian character to it.

  • Very aromatic with both fruit and evolved earthy elements. Light to medium bodied, easy to drink and very food friendly. This is not the most profound Lopez de Heredia, but it's delicious and somewhat more accessible than most.

  • I just love this wine. It has an orange/red color with some bricking on the edges. It has a beautiful nose of cranberry/cherry, leather, tobacco, and a hint of a floral note. On the palate it is just seamless. Smooth and round mouthfeel while remaining light. Minimal tannin and well integrated acidity. I think this will drink well for quite some time. Lovely.

  • Dark ruby color. Nose of dark berries, some coffee, some oak. Palate of blackberry, some cherry, some tar and earthiness with good tannic structure. It was nice to compare a younger wine with one of the classic mature gran reservas. Very solid, well-made wine.

  • 13.0% alcohol. This is a delightful, refined wine that gives expression to Rioja that too frequently lacks. Light red color that is somewhat reminiscent of rust. Very pretty, restrained nose of bright red fruit, a woody note, deep earth, and minerals. In the mouth, this is the embodiment of refinement. It has a light palate presence, cutting a focused swath across the tongue, with beautiful red fruit. It's got a floral, earthy quality that is intoxicating. Smooth and balanced, with great purity, there are no sharp edges. Absolutely focused and terrific. A-

  • Lovely but quite closed on the first few nights tasted, but by the fourth night this really blossomed. Now it's showing deep aromas of cherry, gray salt, dry stone, and smoky earth. Terrific energy on the palate, with fine and nimble and well-structured acidity framing flavors of the above. Shows great balance, particularly between the sweet and tart flavors. The long, cherry-and-minerals finish is both refreshing and elegant.

  • Drinking very well right now. Good balance with the tannins relaxed and just a hint of acidity. Plum and cherry make this burgundy like Rioja a treat.

  • Needed a bit of time but then it was delightfully bloody, savory and saline. Much deeper than a bottle a couple of weeks ago.

  • Rusty red. Subdued but pretty nose of cherry and earth. Burgundian weight and balance, classic Rioja flavor profile. Distinctive, pretty wine, and wonderful at the price point. Not a lot of $30 wines that deliver this much class.

  • Found this lacking a bit in finesse. Feels a bit ripe and round compared to my favorite vintages of Bosconia.

  • Translucent garnet. Leather, tar, roses some pepper, and a hint of dark fruits on the nose. Bright cherry, a tinge of mocha, and a slightly bitter finish. Excellent wine. Yum!

  • Translucent garnet with a slight lightening at the edge. Flowers, leather and little bit of red fruit on the nose. I also got a very slight coffee/mocha bit on the nose. Red fruits with nice acidity and a slightly bitter finish. Extra Yum.

  • Fantastic nose of cherry, cedar and rose petal. Some leather. Raspberry and pepper. Wonderful silky texture, similar to some Burgundy. Hints of subtle coconut and cocoa. Ample acidity. Persistent.

  • A beautiful perfumy, black cherry and spice nose.
Good acids, balance, and intensity in the mouth with some kind of orange and foresty qualities joining the cherries, but the finish is lacking and it isn't particularly silky as far as mouth feel.
Those last two qualities might improve with more age, but I'm not sure. I'm rather inexperienced with Rioja.

  • Initially somewhat closed and with that tell-tale woody impression of old-style Rioja, this definitely benefits from some airtime. After an hour or so, the nose reveals notes of sour cherry, leather and shoe polish, with matching flavors caught in a woody, tannic backwash. This is probably still a few years away from peak performance if the tannins and wood subside. I drank it tonight with some grilled lamb chops and ate on the deck in the ebb tide of an 89 degree April day. I'm no fan of global warming, but it was hard to complain about the whole gestalt at 7:00 PM EDT tonight.

  • 80% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacho, the rest comprised of Mazuelo & Graciano, All Estate grown.
The nose was very hot and a lot of VA right after the cork popped, but the bad stuff blew off within 10 min.
Typical Reserva Rioja nose/bouquet, with dusty, dried plum
and a restrained palate with a high level of acid, again pretty typical of the breed. Medium to light body, begging to be alongside a cut of Asagio and a bit of Bunderflesh.

  • Loved it. I second the "burgundian" description. I would add more, but don't have any rioja experience and thus lack context. I will certainly seek out more LdH.

  • Beautiful and understanted bottle of wine. Still very young. Bright cherry fruits with a little saddle leather on the nose. Acidic, food friendly palate. Subtle in the mouth but still interesting. Long finish. Think of this as a pinot when pairing... steak would overpower this wine. Very unique, and worth trying.

  • Really reminds me of a better Bourgogne. A very light, cherry fruited wine with good acidity and some earthy complexity. I think this is agood deal for $30 and will get a few more.

  • This has truly outstanding elegance and balance, a long, pleasant finish, and a uniformly caressing mouthfeel, but I found it surprisingly characterless - modest ethereal grenache (15%) on the nose, well-integrated american oak everywhere, maybe the smallest hint of something like anise or pepper? If you want an aristocratic wine for red meat that shows off the food, I can't imagine too many better choices...but for 'focused drinking' I felt like it came up a little short.

  • Did not take close tasting notes on this, but again another impressive showing from this consistently excellent producer. Earthy, mushroom on the nose, perfectly balanced. Excellent QPR.

  • this is nothing like a rioja, and if I were to encounter it during a blind tasting, I would surely bet a great deal that it is a Chateauneuf. The horsey saddle leather tones are so very pronounced that it’s hard to believe the grape breakdown: 80% Tempranillo, 15% Grenache, 3% Manuela and 2% Graciano. That 15% seems to go along way. Nice, satisfying. Thankfully devoid of a port-like quality that seems to haunt lesser wines. What would seem to be high acidity and a certain tart quality is pleasing.

  • Just a little tight on the nose with subdued notes of raisin and chocolate. Medium-bodied with fresh notes of strawberry, plum, cherry and a really nice blood orange component on the finish. Seems a little too young at this point.

  • Dark burgundy red core with a light bricking around the rim. On the nose, the wine is showing an expressive bouquet of rose, lavender, cherries and leather. I wouldn’t go so far to call it seductive, but generous all the same. In the mouth, the wine is medium bodied, with fantastic acidity that seamlessly integrates into the light tannins. This is a bright and expressive wine, perfect for a summer’s day alongside a plate of cured ham. 4/5

  • Deep rust color to this wine, showing some age to it. This nose is fun, full of spices, pencil lead, minerals and spice cherry pie quality that sits in the background tempting you to draw nearer. In the mouth this wine is VERY fresh and alive with a fresh acidity and soft mouthfeel. Really a succulent wine that draws you back and begs you to pair it with lamb. Dusty notes sneak in but never seem to rain on the freshness of the scene. Not your typical wine though I wish it were. 4.5/5
