Vinous Piedmont Icons Dinner @ Legacy Records (Legacy Records, NYC): This 750ml of '04 Brunate was a bit less explosive than the magnum I had in April, but was very enjoyable. Next to the '10 Brunate, the change in winemaking is so apparent which was fascinating to see.
On the nose, I found dark red plum fruit, sweet spices, balsamic, and roasted meats. On the palate, the '04 is medium in body with fine grained tannins that are now largely resolved. This is a perfectly balanced wine that is entering its prime drinking window. The wine shows the sweetness and finesse I associate with Rinaldi, but tasted next to the '10, the '04 is austere and old school in comparison. The fruit tones here are maybe a bit more classic Nebbiolo, with dark red fruit, whereas in the '10 Brunate, I found exotic citrus, purple, and blue fruit tones.

Tied for WOTN in tasting of 2004s. This reminded me of the Bartolo but with a denser mid palate and even prettier red fruit. Great wine, and a long runway ahead. Bravo!

Tasted from magnum, the ‘04 Brunate is fresh and vibrant and starting to enter an ideal drinking window for my preferences. The nose was beautifully perfumed and complex with balsamic, sweet spices, roasted meats, tobacco, dark red plum fruit, menthol, and lavender. It is less about obvious fruit at this point, but the fruit tones that are there are beautiful and sweet. On the palate, the ‘04 is medium in body and incredibly finessed, still showing plenty of tannin but very fine grained and well integrated into the wine, while medium to high acidity maintains freshness. I found dark red plum fruit, sweet spices, balsamic tones, licorice, and towards the finish, purple to black hard candy like, very sweet fruit tones, which I consider characteristic of the Rinaldi Brunate. In terms of texture, the ‘04 is somewhere in between the more masculine wines of 1996-1999 and the current releases from Rinaldi, but in absolute terms this is a very silky Barolo.

As with all major Italian wines I much prefer them the 2nd day. This Rinaldi Brunate Le Coste from a great vintage is just to die for. Suspense in a bottle: everything you would want in a great Barolo, sophisticated amarone sun burned delicate grapes, great minerality, depth, its taking control of your entire palette stretching your imagination, long tantalising aftertaste. Incredibly beautiful.

The '04 Brunate is a gorgeous wine and showed well today, while also seeming likely to continue to develop positively for a while. At least in this bottle, I found the '04 to remind me more of the wines from the '90s from this producer than the 2006 & younger vintages. While there was a backdrop of dark fruit on the nose and palate, I found the wine to be dominated by balsamic spices, tobacco, and minerality.
The nose was nicely perfumed with balsamic spices, tobacco, iron, dark fruit, licorice, and lavender. On the palate, the wine was medium in body and smooth from beginning to end, with a high acidity level. Some tannin remains on the finish, but it is very finessed and well integrated. I found a heavy dose of balsamic and sweet spices, a lot of minerality, iron, tobacco, and dark fruit. The palate was more spice and salinity than primary fruit.

Beautiful and ethereal again tonight. Smells so beautiful, billowing black cherries and leather. Similar palate as the nose - a little more secondary and even softer than the bottle I drank 6 years ago. $150 at KC - 3 more left🤣

Barolo 2004 tasting (My place): Barolo 2004 tasting. 8 wines blind. All bottles opened 24h in advance. The nose is very expressive and shows fresh red fruit mixed with floral notes. An airy and beautiful, surprisingly young expression of Barolo. So much freshness on the palate too. Still very much on the fruit with a very finely grained tannin coming out over the very long, elegant and minerally driven finish. What a Barolo! WoTN for me, though not too far from Monprivato and Rocche. This was mistaken for Rinaldi's Cannubi S. Lorenzo. It drank wonderfully on day 2 too.

Decanted for one hour and poured back to the bottle. The wine was served after 2 hours. On the nose, it had vitamins, purple flower, red berries, roses, tar, and graphite. Palate showed the winemaker's feminine and elegant style. I was expecting a bit more on the mid-palate. Perhaps it was too closed?

We had the 04 and 05 Le Coste side by side. They were decent, but both failed to move me. I've enjoyed the 04 a number of times, so I expect it was me, the night, the placement at the end of the night, or something along those lines vs the wines.

Same btl as Brad E. I think tonight this btl along with my '05 were paired with a couple delicious dishes that were not the prefect canvases for these Nebbi masterpieces. That and, I would have preferred both btls been 5 degrees cooler. Better food pairings & better temp would likely have moved both Rinaldis up a point or three, for me. This fun to try the 04.

The 2004 was gorgeous on this evening, showing an early glimpse of what promises to be a long and enjoyable drinking window. The nose showed a mix of polished red and black fruits, licorice, dusty rose, dried orange peel and emerging earth tones. On the palate, I found a soft yet vibrant and lifted expression with bright cherry, sweet spice, hints of fine tannin and pretty inner florals. The finish was long, showing the ‘04’s structure, with a mix of cherry and strawberry against grippy tannin, yet still so fresh. What a beautiful wine.

This is a magnum - and it was opened 4 hours before drinking - so much power - and so fruity - we clearly did not think Rinaldi - but that is what it is - the wine took some time to open up - and that tells you this wine will be good for the next 15 years. The fruit is cherries, plums and some black berries - clear medium on acidity and tannins - also getting tobacco and saddle leather - this is a more powerfull Rinaldi than I am used to - but we are still impressed and in many ways we are sorry we did not wait 10 years to drink this wine -because I am sure it will be great - we are happy to give 94 for a great and very promising Rinaldi.

Such a great vintage. And hence, this more shut down vs the 06 right now. Would appear this is a wine for the very long haul. Not giving up much of anything even with an aggressive swirl. Hints of red fruits and tons of structure. Hold for 15+. This will be amazing with patience.

30 min decant. Ruby color with yellowed rim. Roses, tar, peppermint patty (i.e. chocolate and mint) and anise on the aromatic nose. Nice acidity on smooth palate. Firm tannins on medium long finish.

Slight bricking. Aroma of roses that follows through on the palate, dark fruits. Smooth and easy to drink, good length, integrated tannins, balanced and well made, a solid and satisfying 93-94 point wine just lacking that step up in complexity. No reason to cellar longer. Drink now - 2022.

Wow! That is what you say after you have pored a glass and put your nose in. Medium-light brick color. Very forward and complex aromatics with roses, clay, spices and many more things. Very elegant entry on the palate, Burgundian style, good mid mouth presence, dances all the way. Long finish with a nice dry Nebbiolo touch. World class Barolo. I have to repeat it: Giuseppe Rinaldi and Bartolo Mascarello for me beat Monfortino due to their elegant style. 97-98

Deep bricking at the edge, garnet toward the middle. Nose is constrained, but the wine is ebullient with bright black cherry flavors, chewy licorice, tar, meaty flavors. This is a big wine drinking smoothly right now, tannins fully resolved, in complete harmony.
There is a bit of raisin on the palate upon opening, as might be expected with a deeply brick colored edge. It goes away with an hour in the decanter, but drink sooner than later as all signs point to maturity.

Ruby with minimal lightening. How to describe the aromatics?? I'll give it a feeble try-leather, balsamic, fennel, and dark fruit, but that does not begin to describe the utter complexity or beauty. Medium weight, but penetrating and powerful due to the acidity more than the tannin. Magnificent wine that is barely getting started, but it is not brutal at all, and the balance is readily apparent, making it pure joy to drink now. I wish I could taste it in 30 years or so when it is really ready, but at present it fully bears out the maxim that great wines are great throughout their life span.

Nicely aged Barolo. Showing bricking at the edge. Tastes mature with roses, juicy fresh tartness, a hint of tar, and good length but the mid palate is a bit lacking, empty.

This showed an absolutely beautiful bouquet of strawberry, minerals, dusty spice and hints of savoy herbs. On the palate, it displayed silky textures contrasted by youthful tannin with both red and black fruits and a hint of herbs. Dried red fruits saturated the palate through the finish as this flaunted its tannic clout. The ’04 Brunate – Le Coste was still youthfully restrained yet you can sense that it’s aching to open up and reveal its charms. It may one day outclass the classic ’01.

Opened and let sit for an hour before pouring. Lovely nose with complex layering of scents, first taste impression was bright cherries which resolved into tobacco notes. It did not seem to change much as it opened up. I expected more tannins and darker fruits based on prior reviews but my friends said I was being overcritical.

- Crimsom color with medium forming legs and aromas of blackberry, strawberry jam and honey. It's balanced and has flavours of black currant and cherry with a medium/full body. Polished texture with a long finish - Decanted for 45 minutes. Incredible nose and a finish that lasts for days.

The 2004 Rinaldi Brunate Le Coste really needs another decade in the cellar, but its quality is already apparent. Classic aromas of black and red cherry are inflected by balsamic notes, rich soil tones and incipient hints of tar. On the palate the wine is broad-shouldered, sappy and expansive, with lovely acids, bright, vibrant fruit and firm structuring tannins. This is a powerful but elegant and refined rendition of Brunate. Serious stuff.

Realized when I opened this that i probably should have waiting longer to get the full benefit of this amazing wine. Exemplary aromas of cherries, rose leaves, tar and spice that add individuality and refinement. Succulent and powerful, but still somewhat slim and focused with noticeable tannins. Approachable, but I suspect it will get even better, not least rounder and smoother.

Nose of roses and truffles evolves to dried herbs and balsamic notes. Wonderfully complex in the mouth, with integrated tannins and a long fruit finish. Although this opened up nicely with decanting, it has plenty of years left to evolve. Enjoy 2018 through 2048.

Ethereal nose - red cherries and saddle leather. Masculine wine but gracefully lithe and elegant. The body is smooth, refined, powerful, deep. The palate is rich. It has layers of flavor laid one on top of the next, finely textured and pounded thin, creating depth without bulk: earth, red fruit, minerality, soft and fine tannins. Long finish with the tannins lingering pleasantly. $150 off the list at KC.

We had the 05 Bartolo Mascarello with the 04 Rinaldi Le Coste last night. Both were great, and open for business, and are recommended. I gave the Mascarello a slight nod; the other three at the table slightly preferred the Rinaldi. A great way to usher in the beginning of the holiday season.

Drank the 04 and 08 of Rinaldi's Le Coste side by side. These are both outstanding, and fabulous value in today's wine world. The 04 was deeper and showing some maturity, and the 08 was a youthful beauty that is drinking astonishingly well right now. Loved them both, and encourage anyone to seek them out.

Another great young Barolo that was drinking quite well. Dark cherry fruit. Full and rich but with plenty of balancing acidity. Tannins slightly drying on the finish. Looks to be very long-lived and a far different and better Brunate Le Coste than the '98 from the previous evening.

Quasi faccio fatica a parlarne perché è troppo perfetto. Magnifico

Another nice bottle of the 04. This will surely improve, but it's really in a nice place now.

Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Vertical (I Trulli Restaurant, NYC): [Opened at 11am. Not decanted.] Smoky red fruit and licorice nose. Young, with great structure and tannin. Great length. Similar to the 2001. Needs at least 10 years.

10 year retrospective: Bigger, richer, more structure than the first 3 Barolos, but compact and somewhat closed. This was difficult for me to assess and didn't take notes. Clearly fine material. 92-94

First time trying the '04 and it was a disapointment. Woody, heavy balsamic, just not enjoyable. Not sure this was a representative bottle. It was a letdown for the group after an outstanding bottle of '08.

Magnifico

Rinaldi tasting 98, 00, 01, 04, 06, 08 - This was one of the sleepers of the evening. Very beautiful red and dark fruit, very floral, with some eucalyptus and other spice. Very well balanced and it should hold up well for quite some time.

More reticent than the previous bottle, this one reminded me of a young brunello on day one. Strong acid and sour flavors. On day two, things were in a better place. Hold.

Clear and precise aromas of tar, tobacco, red fruits, and savory meats and herbs....very traditional aromatics but extremely pure fruited and long with tobacco red fruits and minerality....fine and delicate in the mouth with superb balance...This is not a barolo of extract but of precision and balance as to be expected.

Excellent wine, like Barolo should be. Rich deep ruby color, just a touch of brown on the edge. Spice, leather, smoke and licorice on the nose. Cherry, spice on the palate, good tannins and length, will get better with age.

Piaciuto moltissimo, come l'altra volta. Ancora molto vinoso, ma bello pieno e con molta materia. Molto sulla frutta buona, con del tannino bello vivo ma che finisce dolce e piacevole.
