The texture on is this unreal, ethereal, gossomer-like. It dances on the palate so gracefully, yet there’s so much depth. The flavors have a great pull between sweet and tart. Lemon chiffon, petrol, white flowers, green apple, Thai basil, burnt honey and a final hit of mouthwatering minerality that carries through to the long finish. This is excellent.

This has that classic sourball flavor of Saar Riesling and is really tangy with flavors of apricot and peach. Finishes crisp with powerful acidity. May still improve but lacks the class and complexity of the '93 Von Shubert drunk alongside.

This is the sort of airy, elegant and hardly sweet seeming Spätlese which regrettably is a dying, if not dead, species. Light/medium bodied but beautifully harmonious with lime tinged white fruit, spice, petrol sprinkled minerals, mouth-watering acidity and slight RS all in perfect balance and aromas lingering long in the throat. Excellent.

Cepages Holiday Tasting: Champagne & Riesling (New York City): Drank at Cepages holiday tasting. Nose somewhat reticent, slight petrol there. Dinner with Salil (Sun Wah BBQ, Chicago IL): Nose: There is a bit of sulfur on the nose with some egg tones, but it blows off into peaches, wax, candied apples, petrol, and some mineral tones.
Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity. The acidity is well in place and provides a nice spine with honey tones, peaches, wax, candied apples, and some minerals
Overall: This was an excellent 20 yr old riesling. It had the expected more golden color and it really came together more with air.

Clear light gold in color. Clean nose of lime, peach, and petrol. Off dry, med acidity, med body, lime, peach, and petrol palate. Med finish. This wine is still young. Like other tasters my cork was soaked. I was worried that it may be an issue but it was not. I wish I had another to try in a couple of years.

Lovely bottle of wine, shared with a couple who had never tasted old German Riesling before. They loved it. Me, well I found it a bit lacking in depth or concentration. A fine bottle but not one I got all whoop-de-doo over. Sure there's the diesel nose, some Saar valley acidity singing soprano in the background, and lime key pie fruit but the finish drops rather suddenly and the expected weight from the bottle age isn't there. If it were labelled Kabinett instead I'd probably be a lot more generous with the praise.

Justin's Riesling Problem (Willamette Wine Storage, Portland, OR): Wow, what an interesting nose. This smells exactly like the plastic, lime shaped bottle of lime juice. I mean, exactly! There's also a slight charcoal component, coupled with burning wood embers. The palate shows nice richness, with more of the plastic lime juice notion, some new rubber/plastic car parts, and a banana. Bizarre. The finish begins quiet and soft, but then a component of cooked down Swiss char begins rising up, coupled with mild acid that coats the whole mouth on the finish. The overall structure remaining on this one is pretty light, so I'd lean towards consuming today. Despite that, it is a really pleasing and interesting drink today.

Dinner at Matt and Francesca’s (Vancouver, BC): Opened and served a few hours later. Even with its thoroughly soaked through cork, this was another youthful bottle of this wine (3 of my previous 4 bottles were much more mature/advanced). Nice (youngish) nose of orchard fruit, citrus, petrol and crushed rocks. In the mouth notes of citrus, apricot, minerality and hints of petrol with solid acidity and slightly weighty mouthfeel that’s finished up with a nice dose of tart candied lemon. I have one bottle left and I will leave it for at least 5 more years, but probably more. Excellent. 90+

The Long Awaited Wine & Dine (Vancouver, BC): Cork soaked through. Upfront aromas of petrol and gunpowder showing strong on the nose, followed by hints of crushed rocks, ripe peach, and a touch of lime zest peeking through at the end. More of that petrol character jumping out on the palate, along with apricot, white peach, gunpowder, and a bit of caramel. A touch sweet on the palate. Great medium+ acidity, with a medium finish ending with a note of apricot. It appears from the notes that there is quite a bit of bottle variation with these, as this bottle was showing quite youthful. Very good.

At l'Abbatoir. Still very enjoyable..not as good as others I've had. Maybe I've been lucky on bottle variation to this point. Petrol, lime and stone notes. Still fresh acidity. Lacking the finish tonight - ending a little short. Still an impressive effort considering age.

Honey, petrol and smoky slate aromatics on the nose. Some green apple and more tropical fruit as well as herbaceousness and impregnated cloth. Off-dry, medium body and rather crispy acidity. WineFanatic Riesling Offline (Vancouver, BC): Medium yellow in colour. On the nose there’s a saltiness/saline note coming through with some petrol and slate as well with a hint of citrus fruit. Nose seems a little compared to previous bottles. Great tartness on the palate with fresh herbs and some citrus on the palate. Way more youthful then previous bottles. Based on this bottle this wine will go a long time further. Excellent. 91+

Light yellow color. Super heavy petrol on the nose, almost jet fuel like, along with some citrus and stone fruit notes. More petrol on the palate with a tart green apple flavor on the back end. Oily mouthfeel and enjoyable finish but a little flabby though. A touch more acid would have made this wine really sing. I think this wine will only decline with more age so I would drink up if you have any left.

Bill's Monthly Lunch - April 2010 (Vancouver, BC): Opened and served right away (note: when I grabbed this bottle there was some goo seeping out from under the capsule and when I removed it there was even more underneath). Medium gold colour. Pronounced nose of petrol, citrus (mainly lime) and hints of tropical fruits. Thick and weighty on the palate giving more citrus notes and some sweetness, but the flavours not as pronounced as on the nose. Pretty well balanced. This definitely showed much more age on the nose than the palate. Medium acidity and medium to full body. Finished seemed to fade a little quicker than id like. My last few bottles seemed to be slightly fuller and more flavourful on the palate, but this was still very nice. Drink now. Excellent.

Opened and served right away. Medium lemon colour, clear throughout. Pronounced and developed nose of petrol, almonds, lemon grass with some floral notes also. I really like this nose. Flavours of white fruits, pineapple, key lime, honey and steel. Nice tart finish. Off-dry with medium acidity and a medium to full body. The pleasant amount of tartness helps the acidity balance the sweeter flavour profile. This is drinking great right now. Excellent.

Very wet and darkened cork. Light golden color. Initial nose of petrol, apples and honey upon opening with a sweet apple pie covered in gasoline flavor on the palate. Sweetness was more prevelant during early stages of wine but eventually seemed to subside a little and the petrol came through even more. Oily mouthfeel. Long finish. Acidity is still there but not a ton left in the tank. Time to drink up.

This was interesting. First night - smell of wet wood and stones (very weak nose). Beautiful gold-greenish color with amazing clarity. Powerful acidity that overwhelmed the fruit - it paired very well with the sushi that we had ordered. Key lime on the palate. Tasted like a dry Australian riesling. Two nights later - a whole different story. Acidity had softened. Started out with some violets (very interesting), which later transitioned to some more typical pear and apple notes. Very good acidity - sugar balance (this would be a kabinett by today's standards) This definitely needs more time in the bottle, but was still enjoyable. 88+

This was a recent ex-cellar release purchased last fall. Moderate diesel notes overly a stony minerality. Citrus zest & stone fruits. This is very fresh & pairs quite well w/ the food. Bracing acidity rounds out the package. This is still young & will likely integrate further w/ a few more years of bottle age, but it's really enjoyable right now.

This is getting to a nice place. It's got an insistent petrol note over slate, rocks, and some intense lemon and orange peel. It's still early days yet, however. The elements still come across as seperate, distinct components. While approchable, this will be much better in a few more years. It really is surprising how long this is taking to come around.

Pungent, petrolly aroma, then a beautifully chiseled mouthfeel with a rush of white peaches complemented by pineapple and slate. The structure loses some delineation as the wine loses its chill, but the fruit retains its freshness and chases away the dieselly stench.

Excellent.

Golden in color. Nose of petrol, with steely acidity and lots of citrus/lime notes. Faded with air time.

This was nice, not great. Off-dry, not much minerality, light to medium bodied. Just sort of tasted sweet. I don't think this was closed... maybe it's just tired out, although I understand these wines may last for a long time. Maybe I just don't get it....

A very mature petroleum tone on the nose and with a nice palate with lemon.

cork thoroughly soaked, no detrimental effects.
a little match stick, lot of limeade, apple, steel, acidic. very plesant.
when it got less cold, the nose came across 100% like flat Sprite.. not unplesant.
definitely a good try/buy at the price point.
7.5% alc

Developing nicely but lacks a bit of density and finish. Will continue to hold remaining bottles.

Westin (Morristown) - 2/18/2007. Initially pungent, but evolved over the course of dinner into a worthwhile drink. Hints of pineapple, but not overly tropical - some petrol. But long finish

Riesling Mania (including a '76 and a '45) (Port Washington): recenty rereleased - and well worth buying. MO needs another 5 years to shine. different from the '05 - less tropical, more red currants, green apple, some petrol, long tangy finish. still rather primary. (must be COLD cellars)

Pungent, petrolly aroma, then a beautifully chiseled mouthfeel with a rush of white peaches complemented by pineapple and slate. The structure loses some delineation as the wine loses its chill, but the fruit retains its freshness and chases away the dieselly stench.
