Last bottle. Good cork. Some solids, needs decanting. Colour not looking particularly old. Quite savoury nose and palate, possibly around peak, dry good mouth feel. Nothing out of place. Enjoyable, despite slightly rubbery and slight harsh twist which some people would not notice.

Good reference point CdP from regionally well-regarded family growers. Mr. Quiot passed away some few years ago and the family now carries on. A local CdP dynasty. Large land holdings allows them to produce in quantities, so more of a family made mass produced product (!?). Cherries, meat, currants, roses; a more bitter finish on day 2 as the fruit fades, so best drink up on day 1.

Don’t recall ever drinking a wine from this producer before. Label says this has all of the permissible “Heinz 57 varietals” and comes off as classic CdP. Not getting any real funk which (to me, anyway) in modest amounts can give startling complexity to wines from this region. Very fresh and clean. 90+

This is why we buy GSM and store it. We poured through an aerator into a pitcher, then let it set for 30 minutes, then back through the aerator into the bottle for serving. Wine was gentle (aged), and modestly tannic (as appropriate for a dinner wine) with abundant fruit. We vacuum pumped the bottle, then refrigerated for the next day. After letting it come back to room temperature we enjoyed a repeat experience with the second half.

Drinking perfectly now, though not showing tremendous maturity. Deceptively dusty and mushroomy nose when first opened, it seemed a bit tired so I didn't want to decant. Blossomed in the glass with an explosion of floral and liquorice scented cherry fruits. Creamy while retaining freshness, this goes down like velvet and and only shows hints of its savoury potential. I hestitate to say wait, as its so delicious, but with the acid and tannic structure, I do think this has the potential to improve if you like those secondary characteristics to star.

A couple of years since I last tried it. Appearance hasn't changed much: mid, slight maturity, looks like it could be burgundy. Nose complex, some maturity, not over ripe. Palate is well balanced. A wine to sip slowly. Highish alcohol slightly noticeable but not a problem. Mouthfeel very attractive, still a bit tannic but that's part of the flavour profile. A touch of smoke. This is good, and I'm glad I have a few more. Should be served a bit cool (not lunch in the sun!) and not near a burgundy.

Parker wrote that 2007 is the greatest vintage in the Rhone during his lifetime. This 10 year wine is a good instance of the truth in his opinion. Lush, rich, vivacious, and delicious. Tasted repeated side by side with diverse wines over 7 days, this Chateauneuf remained the finest wine on the table. Delightfully refreshing, enjoyable, caressing, and seamless.

This wine was elegance in a glass. Rich harmonized red fruit with smoke and earthy notes on the nose. The palate was pure pleasure in a glass. Rich ripe red and black fruit, complexity with earthy, almost licorice notes and herbaceous qualities. It was just a full bodied rich velvety texture with a great finish. I highly recommend this wine.

As much as I dislike Jerome for disrespecting my friends and I when we visited, he is a pretty good winemaker.
This was very elegant. None of the over ripeness of the vintage. Light red. Beautiful light earthy red fruit nose. Delicious light raspberry flavours and nice dry finish.

Decanted one hour and consumed at dinner with pork and lentil stew. Good pairing with food. Wine was in good shape, no bricking and dark color. Not tremendously aromatic but earthy, meaty nose, with consistent if straightforward flavor through the mid palate to a long if slightly hot finish. Solidly represents its vintage and terroir.

Awesome after a 2 hour decant. Well worth the wait!! Raspberry, eucalyptus, mushroom and smoked meat made up the flavor profile. A long enduring finish. Only regret? Shared with 6 people. Wish I had another. Will have to wait for the 2010

Colour showing some age but not a lot. Nose well rounded, savoury, some maturity but still generous fruit (grenache +). Palate very good mouth filling and intensity. Some tannin at back. A year or two might diminish it, but it does add to the mouth feel. Although it has a reasonably high alcohol level (14.5% according to the label) the wine carries the alcohol well, so the impression is not hot.
5 days later: I've just drunk the second half of this bottle (i put half into a screw cap 375mL bottle for later) and I want to add that this is really very appealing. This wine is very active on the palate in a positive way.

Drank this at the same time as 2010 from same vineyard. The 2007 was clearly more matured both in colour and smell and taste impression. It has matured well and my feeling is that it is currently in a good drinking window with limited further potential. SOft and well balanced but still with nice character. The 2010 had still some promising accidity left and will stay in the cellar for some more years.

Well made CdP, not spectacular but worth its price. Color is ruby of medium depth. Nose is quite intense with fair complexity mixing tart cherry fruit with darker fruit and licorice on a background of herbs. Medium to full body with medium level of soft tannins, fairly high acidity balancing fruit nicely and decent finish.

This was the 2nd of 6 purchased on release. It was taken from the cellar and moved to the refrigerator for 2 hours then decanted for 30 minutes. There was a noticeable stinky quality to this immediately after the decant which blew off by the time it was poured to accompany sausages and pan roasted veggies. Served at a low 60's temp in a fairly warm setting, this seemed at first rough and charmless with little to offer on the nose or palate. With more air and warming over the next hour, it opened nicely to reveal pleasant red fruits, black tea, and a slight herbal-stemmy-creosote edge. The balance of fruit and tannins was good and the alcohol level was not obtrusive though it seemed slightly lacking in acidity. It is a well made but not memorable wine that is quite serviceable now and will hold for a couple more years. I do recommend decanting this for sediment with an hour to air out in the decanter. 87 POINTS
UPDATE: 12/01/2013 Decanted for an hour before serving with a homemade split pea soup and a crusty peasant bread. This had the same stink on decanting that the first bottle did and left a medium amount of flakey sediment in the bottle. On serving, the stink was gone and the additional time in the decanter seemed to be a benefit. This bottle was definitely more open for business than the 8/26/2013 bottle. The acidity seemed to in better balance and the flavor components were more clearly defined. Overall, this seems to be as good as it will get and the initial bottle stink is a concern for extended aging. I would finish these up over the next two years. 89 points for this bottle.
UPDATE: 8/7/2014 Decanted for 1 hour before serving with burgers and fries. This was my last bottle of this and as quite often happens, it seemed to be the best of the lot. While it still had more of the herbal character than I like, there was none of the initial bottle stink that some of the earlier bottles had and it seemed to be better integrated overall. Pleasant and a suitable pairing. 90 points.

Medium visual intensity. Not as dark as the typical CdP. Medium+ nose of dark fruits. Cherries, overripe wild strawberries of all things (yes I know that is atypical but there it was like strawberries in liqueur) and new leather jacket. Ripe mouthfilling depth on palate with dark fruitcake, slightly stewed tastes. Still developing I think. Nice creamy feel and decent length.

Slightly lighter colour than one is accustomed to for CdP - more garnet than cherry. Very attractive aromatic profile: blueberries, vanilla, saddle leather and a touch of horse sweat, like a top-flight Ribera del Duero. The 2007 vintage was outstanding but I'm not sure this wine, for all its virtues, reflects the pedigree of the vintage. On the palate it's taut, silky and richly fragrant - dominant notes are cocoa, cinnamon, cream and pine needles. Delicious and elegant, but missing the wow-factor that CdP is so commonly capable of. Notwithstanding these reservations, this is still a 92-93 pointer.

This is the second bottle i have consumed after the lack luster first i had about a month ago. I split the bottle over two days. The second day the wine settled down, and was more palatable. This wine was splash-decanted and serially tasted over two hours. The robe is medium ruby and the nose shows moderately intense aromas of red currants, underbrush and smoke. Medium-bodied on the palate, with low-to-medium acidity and medium sweet tannins. The flavors are red fruit-dominated, with a silky mouth texture and a solid middle palate. Medium, smooth finish. This is a lighter-styled Châteauneuf which should drink nicely over the next 5-7 years. Drink now-12/17.

OK, but nothing special. Rather light, but not "thin." I primarily drink California wines, and had higher expectations for my first CdP, so I was disppointed. Would make an easy drinking cocktail wine, but I not match it with an elegant dinner. Probably not worth the price.

On the lighter side for CdP, and ready to go as soon as the cork left the bottle. This was a delicious mid-weight Chateauneuf full of red cherries, wild strawberries, and red currant jelly. I hesitate to score a wine this high without more complexity than this showed, but it was sooooo drinkable. Just evoked too many smiles to score this one any lower. :)

I thought this showed integration and balanced elegance. Not totally stunning, but drinking well now. Medium body, slightly lighter ruby-garnet eye, nice minerality and dusty fruit with light herbs on the nose. Good fresh attack with fruit that seems to float on the palate. Shows some tannin and white pepper on the finish. Went over well by the glass, and would be great with food. Character that will develop too over next so many years, too. Good price for this quality.

i remember reading in karen mcneil's wine bible something about how the flavors of chateauneuf-du-pape (how come everyone abbreviates to cdp? it's almost as much fun to type as it is to say aloud) tend to just come tumbling out of the glass, helter skelter. this wine didn't quite live up to that ideal, but i will say, it races through its many layers pretty damn quick, coming off like a sweet and sour teeter totter, when in fact there's all kinds of interesting stuff going on in between... it just happens in the blink of an eye, is all.

My first CdP. Splash decanted for 45 minutes before pouring. Remarkably lovely ruby color in the glass. First impression in the mouth was the distinctive and pleasurable viscosity. There was a palate coating weight and smoothness to the wine which, at the risk of sounding like a real bs artist, I want to describe as "molten silk", although there was nothing at all hot or angular or sharp to it. Enough acidity to deliver red fruit flavors, and fully integrated tannins on the finish. Another unusual (for me) reaction: At no point did I want to aggressively "swish" the wine around inside my mouth to further open it up. I just wanted it to lay there while I enjoyed it. Also bears noting that I drank the bottle over three nights, vacuvin-ing and returning to the cellar each evening, and the wine was as enjoyable on Tuesday as it was on Sunday. No score or grade because I have no basis on which to compare this to other CdPs. But I can say that after drinking this wine I will be significantly more likely to seek out more CdP.
*3 hours decanting* Ruby-red, thick rim, medium dark. On the nose I first get aromas of fresh baked bread and pastry. Then some oak and lingonberry, before it turns more towards a gamey component, walnuts and almonds then ripe raspberries on the back end. Starts out with great mouth feel. Dry in the beginning with nice firm tannins, earthy and peppery. More walnuts before it gets juicy and more fruit-focused. No disturbing oak on the palate. Very nice and long finish with raspberries, lingonberries and almonds.

Purchased with diner at Abattoir. Paired well with pork tasting and stuffed duck leg. Pop and pour. Initial meaty aromas which blew off quickly to dark fruit dominated by earth/herb/floral driven nose. Well balanced wine which handled the 14.5% alcohol well. Continued to improve throughout the 2 hours it was open. For $43 at a restaurant can't go wrong, low markup from what I gather.

Youthful, glowing purple with exceptional clarity. Cherries, plums, lavendar, and tarragon on the nose. Palate of plums and roasted herbs, somewhat out of focus, with admirable depth and weight. Raspberry jam on the late midpalate and finish. Hot, showing plenty of that 14.5%ABV, which settles in with air. Very good, and will probably be great in another year or two.

Seriously floral; different. Clean, balanced. Minor soy, iodine and caramel come eventually. Yes, into a closed period, but fundamentally this is a relatively weak, elegant-but-puny CdP which for me is just missing things by focussing on the florality. 87 at best.

Lots of alcohol and acids, some coffee flavours combined with dark berries, and strawberry(?). I couldn't quite catch that last flavour. Strawberry is the closest match I can think of, but it's not really that. Oh well. Decent, but still a shadow of last year's vintage.

A very shy nose that revealed just some fruit and discreet oak notes. Full-bodied with concentrated fruit: raspberry, cherry. Mid-level acidity and rather easy on the tannins. Peppery spiciness, liquorice, chocolate and some mocha. Good length but overall rather dull. Wasn't performing much although was decanted for some hours. Still a nice match for elk roast.

Popped and poured. Dark red color with some transparency. Tremendous nose that leaped out of the glass of ripe red fruit and sweet dried herbs and lavendar spices. Same flavor profile on the front but then started to fall apart toward the middle and end. Very hot finish. Then, half way through the glass, the alcohol blew off and it came together and found itself. Very nice at this point. Definately decant or at least open a few hours before you plan on having this. Or put away for a few years. It will get better.

My next trial of a 2007 Rhône Valley wine, not exactly cheap at €24, but affordable. Decanted for an hour and a half. A fairly dark red tinged with violet. The nose is fairly expressive with red cherries and some citrusy oak in the background. I am not getting very excited by these aromas, very generic... On the palate there is lots of red fruit, some tannins, rather easy drinking, not very exciting here either. This is a bit of a disappointment, quite OK, and I would be more excited if it were a €10 wine, but for €24, naah, pass. 50+4+10+15+7=86

Nice, well balanced and crystal clear violet hued ruby wine. The nose was cherry fruits, wet loam and herbs. A medium dark fruit of tart cherry and raspberry was wrapped in earthy mushrooms and wet soil. The acidity carried a medium and satisfying finish. The profile gained interest with some air.

87 POINTS
UPDATE: 12/01/2013
Decanted for an hour before serving with a homemade split pea soup and a crusty peasant bread.
UPDATE: 8/7/2014
Decanted for 1 hour before serving with burgers and fries.

Notwithstanding these reservations, this is still a 92-93 pointer.

i remember reading in karen mcneil's wine bible something about how the flavors of chateauneuf-du-pape (how come everyone abbreviates to cdp? it's almost as much fun to type as it is to say aloud) tend to just come tumbling out of the glass, helter skelter. this wine didn't quite live up to that ideal, but i will say, it races through its many layers pretty damn quick, coming off like a sweet and sour teeter totter, when in fact there's all kinds of interesting stuff going on in between... it just happens in the blink of an eye, is all.

Ruby-red, thick rim, medium dark.

Drink now w/ long decant or hold. 90+ -JRS

Quite tight to start with, but opening up to a big full bodied wine with red fruits, and earth. Bold tannins and a great match for a steak. Would probably hold until 2013.

11/16/2009 - Lilja Likes this wine:
Rhone - Västra Gastronomiska Akademin Vänförening (Göteborg): Pepprig, fruktig doft med märka bär, hallon, vanilj och julkryddor. I smaken en tydlig restsötma, med aromer som choklad, vanilj. Mycket fyllig med en bra syra. Något spretig, troligen på grund av sin unga ålder.

May be a bit young; hot on the back end and a bit acidic on the front. Give it a year.
