This had a rather perfumed and floral nose, needed some coaxing to open. Very light, spicy, mineral and traces of new oak. Candied strawberry notes are very out there. Medium to full body and persistent tannins. This definitely can age but enjoyable now. I’m still quite perplexed by the colour here.. does look really pale and light for a Vogue, and a BM at that too.

Same bottle as Melvin and Jason. This was a beautiful young Burgundy with bright red fruit, initially clearly a fair bit of whole cluster, fragrant and aromatic and with good length. I wrote down 2017 Burgundy, top end village or 1er Cru. I wondered whether this was Vosne, but then in a cool vintage such a young wine could have been made in other places. As per our generous friend this had been sourced from a very reputable local retailer. Gave it 93 points blind. Unfortunately I had the 2007 Vogue Bonnes Mares merely two years ago in another blind tasting dinner. Rated it 96 and clear WOTN with some stiff GC competition. But more importantly it was a completely different wine, clearly in the dark fruit spectrum, earthy notes on a medium body with good concentration, superb balance of freshness and weight. It was then already in its peak drinking window, which did not surprise anybody given it was a 2007.

End of year celebration: Don't think I've had a bottle that generated so much controversy. Light, elegant red cherry fruit that didn't feel more than 5 years old - thought this was a 2017 Vosne. Perplexing because this was neither Vogüé nor Bonnes Mares in nature as it lacked any sort of robustness; we were debating if it was a fake or a recently released bottle. Pleasant but not mindblowing.

Great expression of chambolle's characteristics in this vineyard. medium to light bodied and elegant, with softened tannin and a nose of spice and leather and red fruit. On the palate medium plus acidity and a lingering finish. The perfect foil for Holiday Spiced goose and vegetables. Delicious. Day 2 drinking just as well...but less fruit and more baking spice like nutmeg and cinnamon. Have one more, but I don't think there's much need to wait.

Jordan Intro-Retro (Zoom / Chicago): Double blind. Earthy aromas of maturing black cherry and plum. The palate has rich chewy powerful fruit showing plenty of braised meat. Some earthy character emerging as this is showing mature. Good balance so this could continue to improve but will the fruit retain enough freshness? Disappointing upon reveal. My #6, Group #6.

Chicago Wine Flock...Burgundy Double Blind from JW (Chicagoland IL): Tasted double blind in 2007 Bonnes Mares flight. Black and red cherry with faint meat hints and barely starting to show evolution and corresponding depth. Elegant with charming textures, but just barely showing Grand Cru density. Not even close to the great level of previous, better bottles, seemingly "90 points" tonight.

Opened 90 minutes before really digging in. Seductive aromatics of meaty black cherry, ground clove and star anise, with crushed violet petals too. Some damp leaf note starting to come out, but overall still a very fresh, young-ish wine aromatically. Richly textured palate with the same black cherry and spice all throughout. Tannins have melted away nicely. Probably already in, or entering it’s prime drinking window. Very, very delicious.

This showed very well at a lovely dinner. Side by side Barthaud Cras 02 I had a clear preference for the Bonnes Mares. I think Vogue is often said to need a lot of time and I perceive it a bit as the Leoville Barton equivalent in Burgundy (apparently good wines but hardly anyone can tell that they had a wine that seemed in a good spot to drink...) but this 07 did somewhat vindicate that image of Vogue. Then again 07s are in a great spot now, and so was this. No notes but just a great showing of a very complete red Burgundy that seemed to possess a nice melt in the mouth. 94-95 and drinking now.

Tasted blind in a pair with the 2007 Musigny VV. For me the BM had the edge. More closed but I liked the structure here with a meaty side, farmyard, red fruit, long finish.
A Birthday Celebration (Taste 222 - Chicago IL): Magnum. Complex red cherry and berry aromas with floral charm. Seems fleshy to start but yet so balanced and elegant. Very good length, good+ weight. Entering its peak drinking window.

Charleston Offlineorama V; 11/7/2019-11/10/2019 (The Holy City): Unfortunately this was paired with the 98 Roumier. While this is drinking well, I still believe that 07s will never display correct complexity. It is a little sweet and simple for a Grand Cru, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Powerfully perfumed nose of incense, heady dark blue flower blooms interwoven with oaky, yeasty, mushroomy notes and finally wafts of black tea leaves after 2 hours. On the palette, this is luscious sweet red fruits, with grippy tannins. Many, many more years ahead of this wine. Still tight and jammed packed with perfume, flavours, and intoxicating complexities.

The nose screams Burgundy. Quite dark notes of raspberries and blueberries, followed by cloves and candied cherries. Red fruit, spices, and more cherries on the palate. Good acidity and relatively low tannins. Long finish. This probably needs time.

(Half-blind tasting Burg GC 2007) Medium-fullish, elegant and fresh nose. Red cherry, red plum, some violets and a very evident balsamic note. Deep and complex. Also raspberries, some caramel and gently oaky. Almost dried fruit character. Medium-fullish, subtle and very harmonius palate. Violets, flower, rasp-berries and both red and dark fruit. Balsamic, dark, pure and clean. My guess: RSV. Wrong. I did detect the red-fruit character of Chambolle in this, but some other wines had it more evident. Thus I went for a "feminine" Vosne. This did give much more pleasure than de Vogue's Musigny in this tasting. Drink or hold.

Wonderful showing today. Approachable but with years of drinking ahead. Big for an ‘07, no sign of elevated acidity of the vintage, seamless on the palate. Only thing lacking is probably the details. Not sure why Vogüé wines are generally not ‘loved’ by wine community.

2017 Villa d’Este Wine Symposium - Kelly and Kevin's excellent adventure; 11/9/2017-11/14/2017 (Villa D’este, Lake Como and Milan): A bit coiled youthful nose displaying ripe black fruit with a hint of red, blackberry, strawberry jam, sweet spices and earth. Medium concentration, ripe black fruit driven palate impression, good acidity, noticeable but none obtrusive tannins and a medium to long jammy black fruit and limestone/mineral driven finish. Not the level of the Roumier version but enjoyable and promising. Perhaps another ten years to reach the peak.

(Blind tasting) Lovely, very perfumed Burg nose with red fruit. Good depth, touch of spices, some cinnnamon. Fruit almost in dried fruit spectra. Strawberry, sandalwood and lingering blueberry notes. Very perfumed. Medium-fullish, dense, youthful and very concentrated palate. Perfect combo of strawberries and plum. With time more haunting Indish Spices. Fresh, long and very elegant. Flirty and velvety. We guessed on Amoureuses or Clos de Tart. Did not detect any rough or "wild" edges which could have led us to Bonnes Mares. Very elegant expression.

A long Sunday lunch at Noble Rot (Wellington, NZ): A more translucent colour than the Musigny. A more approachable, attractive bouquet but sturdier, earthier with smoke and a Bonnes Mares feral, 'blood and fur' element. In the mouth, plenty of volume and structure. More red fruited than the Musigny and detailed, with that Bonnes Mares funky, earthy complexity and smokey barbequed game meats. Good acidity and well balanced. A top Bonnes Mares that I would expect to improve with another 5+ years in the cellar but be at its peak far before the Musigny.

Thought this was younger than 2007, but nevertheless unmistakably, without any doubt Bonnes – Mares, from the first sniff in the glass and onwards. Nose is deep and wild, filled with a wonderful mixture between herbs, weed, animals, smoked & raw meat, blood, fine oak spices, minerals, earth, smoked stones, the lovely fruits, raspberries, ripe cherries, strawberries & finally the lighter floral notes of roses, perfume & naked newly showered women between clean sheets. Killer nose. Palate is also very fine, with the sweetest and most velvety Pinot fruit. A mixture of wild strawberries, strawberries, ripe cherries, sappy raspberries, with a touch of blue & black more earthy fruit underneath, dusty minerals and it has something wild about it too. Great length, depth, sweetness, acidity and balance. A real shape shifter during the remaining time before, all too soon, the glass was empty. When the bottle was revealed I understand why I guessed on a younger Bonnes Mares, this is very young in style, and ready to enjoy now. (My blind guess was Groffier Bonnes Mares – 2013) Simply great stuff! Right all the way up my alley. Vogüé is such a great Domaine. (94 – 96)

BM-BM themed dinner (Imperial Treasure SPD, Paragon): Nosed and tasted youngest of the 3. Very "bright" nose of red-cherries, flowers/violets, spices. On the palate, the almost-chewy red-fruits and cherry-liqueur note gave away its young age. There was plenty of sappiness & meat, all delivered in a very silky package making this already enjoyable. Wonder how long can these (good) '07s last... when they're all so tasty and enjoyable already at this juncture...

BM (Batard Montrachet) BM (Bonnes Mares) dinner at Imperial Treasure. Dark red, with good clarity. Rich nose, very alluring floral bouquet, with violets, blueberries, currants and scorched earth. Some smoked meats and mint. Palate had really good complexity and structure, with a great balance between acidity and purity of fruit. (who the hell says the 07s are not a good bunch?!). Lovely cherry liquer, ripe raspberries and blueberries, touch of chocolate powder and black tea. This has a long way to go, but can be accessed with lots of satisfaction today.

The 2007 de Vogüé Bonnes Mares is a few steps behind the Musigny in this vintage, and doesn't really compare with Roumier's 2007 Bonnes Mares, but it is a very creditable grand cru, emerging from the glass with notes of red cherry, blood orange, sauvage notes and a framing of new wood. This is an attractive, elegant—delicate even—rendition of Bonnes Mares. With sappy acids and a firm core, this is already approachable and unlikely to be a long-distance runner.

Dinner at Home with Friends (My House, Chicago IL): Opened roughly 6 hours in advance, 4 of which were in a decanter. Served alongside the 07 Roumier Bonnes Mares. Sappy red, blue and black cherry and berry fruit on the nose and palate. There is quite a bit of mineral structure remaining here, but the wine was still fairly giving with the extended decant. A nice mix of earth with brown spices. Medium bodied with a long finish. Nice cleansing acidity. Overall, more giving than the Roumier at this stage, but both have long lives ahead. Decanting is essential right now.

Opened and decanted for roughly 2 hours before serving. Showing a lot of fruit and spice on the nose when poured into the decanter, but by the time dinner came around, it seemed to tame down a bit. Still some nice softer red cherry and plum notes intermixed with earth tones. After 20-30 minutes, it started shutting back down. I went back to it a few times throughout the rest of the evening, but it did not seem to open back up. A pretty wine with good structure, but still in need of more time.

Decanted for about 4 hours before serving. Powerful, highly aromatic aromas of red and black cherries with some seductive spice notes. Some cocoa too along with a bit of savory herb. Sappy palate and while the wood is definitely showing, this is certainly approachable. Not as gripping tannins as I remember. Very nice wine and although delicious with some decanting, I'm going to let mine age a bit more.

Tasted blind, after an approximate 3-4 hour decant. Many 2007s are this approachable, but few are this gorgeous. Incredible balance, even if presently showing off a bit much of its new oak. Great cross-section of red and black fruit with very subtle, reserved tannins for a Bonnes Mares. The fruit really pops here. This will be a great young drinker, perhaps starting in a year or two.

Loaded with blueberries, black fruits, minerals and meat. It has power with elegance and the fruits are sweet and shapely. There is a heart of liqueur cherry and it is not a big bruiser of a Bonnes-Mares, rather it sits back and waits for you to approach.

Surprisingly mature for an 07. Pleasant to drink. Hints of chocolate.
Almhof lunch.

Much more structure than the Musigny. Dark fruit and more present oak. More red and blue fruit on the palate. More power than finesse.

Bonnes Mares with Jasper Morris (The Pickering Cellar, St James's, London): Dense and smooth, a hint of spice, but overall reticent, everything locked in

Very plush clean ripe sweet red plum aromas, quite pretty.
Dark dry wall of dense soft fruits. Velvet texture and almost creamy. Ripe with little underlying sweetness, but interesting earthy quality.Lovely wine, yet not overly complex. Will be interesting to see how it develops in time.

Burgundy 2006-2007 Tasting (Bistro Chernichovsky, Tel Aviv): Very elegant and refined nose, complex but does not erupt. Flowers and sweetness. The palate is also excellent and continues the nose. Medium bodied with well integrated and smooth tannins. Good acidity.(417$)

At the Domaine: Flowered in April picked on September 1. Very refined, slightly candied fruits hit you first but the dense black and blue fruits in the mouth are dominant. Smooth as silk with great backbone and fullness, violet and Peonies.

Tasted from barrel at the Domaine. Outstanding palate of sappy, juicy dark blue/black fruits. There is almost a note of confit fruit on the palate. Great acidity and minerality. A very seductive wine with a nice grip on the backend.

Loaded with blueberries, black fruits, minerals and meat. It has power with elegance and the fruits are sweet and shapely. There is a heart of liqueur cherry and it is not a big bruiser of a Bonnes-Mares, rather it sits back and waits for you to approach.
