Double decanted; notes from day two: Garnet color with slight browning at the rim. Muted nose of dark fruit. Raspberries and blackberries on a medium-bodied, dry palate with ample acids. Relatively long length finish. Probably a bit past its prime, so time to drink up.

Magenta in color. 15.9% ABV. Powerful nose of ripe red fruits, pepper and licorice. Full bodied but lacking the necessary acidity to keep the alcohol in check. Massive, almost port like, Zinfandel. Strawberry compote, raspberry liqueur and black pepper on the palate. Medium length on the finish. Drinkable but somewhat disappointing given how well the Pesenti has performed in recent years.

Big prune and blackberry fruit, heated spice from the alcohol content. Large scaled and lacking freshness, this is a dry wine best enjoyed for dessert at the end of the evening. Pretty good in that context, served a little more than slightly chilled.

Spice, smoke, pepper. Incredibly smooth and coating. The years aging in bottle have done this wine well. No rough edges. Smoothed out. Impressive concentration and finish. I do not see this going anywhere soon but it probably is drinking as well as it will get. Excellent Zin.

Tonight the 2007 Pesenti delivered better than every before - to a lovely chicken molé and exquisitely made pulled pork this wine was somewhat of a revelation. The nose offers up that classical Zinfandel tones which can be quite intriguing and lovely: soft shellfish, sun warm strawberries and sweet licorice. The palate follow through nicely with a balanced but still adorable acidity and a very nice integration. There is a whiff of heat in the end palate but still, this wine is certainly a treat for the Zinfandel addict!

Drank as part of a 15 vineyard, 15 person, non-blind horizontal of 2007 Turley Zinfandels. Wines were opened but remained in the bottle for 1.5 hours; only Hayne was decanted. Wines were grouped by appellation. People did not taste wines in the same order. Hayne and Ubberroth were the clear winners.
A participant/statistician ran some interesting analyses:
• People got more lenient as they went on, with the 15th wine consumed rating on average a little over 1 point higher than the first. This trend became noticeable beginning about the 8-9th wine tasted. (Were the wines opening up more? Or, were people less discerning as BAC rose?)
• Four people (including me!!) rated wines significantly more in line with group opinion. Three other people were clearly contrarian; their deviations from the averages were much greater than the others.
• There was greater consistency in some wines than others; Mead, Moore, and Uberroth had the greatest consistency in ratings. Oddly, Hayne did not, even though most people probably surmised that Hayne was a most expensive wine.
In order, with average score (pretty tough graders!!):
Lovely. Nose of raspberry and blackberry, with notes of wet rock, baking spice, and cut grass. On the palate, raspberry and a hint of blueberry, with an interesting note of mint and cocoa. Slightly bitter on the finish, but otherwise well integrated and drinking nicely.

Having a little trouble with the new CellarTracker format; this note was attributed to a 2010 Pesenti when it should have been 2007 Pesenti. I believe that I have withdrawn the 2010 attribution. The 2007 never reached the expected level of intensity; pleasant but not as flavorful and complex as expected with Turley; maybe it is getting old.

Although this effort is a very good example of just how good a Zinfandel can actually be, I think it is time to drink up if you have any bottles left. The fruit is loud and noisy as usual in Zinfandels, but there is something frail about it tonight. The oak is a bit more exposed tonight compared to the last tasting. A very nice example of age-worthy top level Zinfandel.

We had this with roasted pork loin on 5/27/12. It had a powerful, deep, rich and voluptuous bouquet of blackberry, cherry, raspberry, smoke, licorice and pepper aromas. The palate was powerful and beautifully integrated with flavors of cherry, blackberry, licorice, pepper, spice and chalky minerals…extremely enjoyable!

Best Zin I've had in recent memory and it really stuck with me. Wonderful mouthfeel... no sense of heat even served at over 70 degrees. Honest and focused red fruit (i.e. not propped up by Petite Sirah), clove, and milk chocolate. But the best part is the creamy, chalky mineral that binds it all together... especially on the nose, oddly enough. Wish I had more of this.

Drinking perfectly tonight, showing pleasant signs of maturity. The fruit is now balanced with subtle acidity and a humble dose of oak. Tasted alongside a 2007 Turley Juvenile, the 2007 Pesenti reveals much more complexity and less compact fruit. It has clearly benefitted from a few years in the cellar.

- Garnet color. It's unbalanced with a medium/full body with a long finish - Rich, heavy fruit, definitely some heat from the alcohol. Strong chocolate flavors with some spice on the finish. Kind of rough around the edges and better with food - maybe some BBQ!

The 2007 Turley Pesenti Zinfandel is starting to show some age which I think is just lovely. Aging means acidity and oak marching forward while the fruit remains very expressive yet a little more hesitant. The wine is simply more balanced, but hardly "elegant". Of course more forward acidity implies the wine is better with food than in its youth, but I still prefer any Turley Zin to some cheese and fig marmelade.

This bottle had a long finish with that beautiful characteristic peppery-ness that defines a zinfandel. We has with spicy food (chorizo-shrimp quessadilla with chipotle guacamole) which might sound odd, but the Turley brought out the heat in the food deliciously. Totally enjoyable bottle.

Medium-dark purple. Red fruit and spice on the nose. Cherries, cassis and spice on the palate, with the signature Turley pepper. Smooth and integrated, wth no hint of the alcohol on the palate. Long, pleasant finish. Delightful.

With some age the vineyard designated Turley zinfandels tend to reveal more acidity and more of an "oaky" tone. This is true for the 2007 Pesenti as well... Do not be mistaken, there is plenty of the vivid and explosive Turley fruit, which some love and others hate, but this fruit is surrounded by pleasant integrated oak and a streak of acidity(!) This effort is hitting its prime drinking window right now. To some cheese after dinner it is magical.

What a difference a year and a half makes. The closed tartness I got from the first bottle was completely gone. Rich and expressive, worked equally well with a pan-seared strip steak and alone after dinner. Didn't order this in the last two offerings but won't miss it going forward. And will be sure to hold for 1-2 years minimum.

A full-throttle cherry bomb right out of the chute. Kirsch and sandlewood coat the tongue, with a finish reminiscent of a fine Sambucca. Mellows out slightly as it sits, with alluring notes of hyacinth blooms. Drink now for the fruit rush; age another year or two for a more floral component. Either way, it's delicious.

This was given to us as a gift. The aromatics are expressive, with rich aromas of red berry pie, black pepper, licorice, and vanilla/dark chocolate arising from the glass as the wine warms from cellar temperature. The palate follows in fashion, opening with layered and lush (but nicely restrained) dark berries, accented by vanilla and warm spice. The mid-palate presents as an extension of the front end flavors with integrating elements of milk chocolate. The wine finishes long with lingering elements of espresso, maple, cherry reduction, and toasted oak. It is exceedingly smooth, medium to full bodied, and wonderfully textured. Make no mistake this is a big wine, but it doesn’t jump over the top. The 15.9% alcohol is expertly integrated and is not noticeable. This is a delicious zinfandel with bombastic, but authentic fruit, and interesting secondary complexity. R&M 90

Spicy with hints of sandalwood and smoke. Not as fruit forward as most Turley Zins we've had, which made this a nice change from the norm. Hints of plum and dark berries with some vanilla notes in the finish. Perfect with a BBQ filet (which I unfortunately overcooked). Tannins have receded, but I think this has at least 3-4 years left. Hides its alcohol (15.9%) very well. Not at all hot. Amazing what Turley has done with this vineyard.

15.9% ABV. Dark garnet somewhat translucent in the glass. An effusive clove spice cinnamon on the nose nose. Full bodied on the palate with rich, sweet flavors of ripe zinberry fruit and suggestion of raisins. I enjoyed this bottle more than previous.

Really disappointing. I had huge expectations for this bottle given the vintage and vineyard. Thick and cloying without any of the complex spice/fruit layers of the 06, 08, and other Pesentis. This was a mass of prunes and raisins that overwhelmed whatever other nuance was there. Tasted more like a cheap Lodi zin than one of the Turley flagships.

Deep dark maroon color. Brambly berries, pepper, vanilla, more pepper, caramel, spicy oak, and violets on the nose. Full bodied with solid, ripe tannins and good acidity. As usual, really pushes the ripeness but does not cross the line. Big and bold on the palate with tons of peppery, spicy berries. Long, juicy, mouthwatering finish. Really good stuff if you like a big, peppery zin.

Amazing, explosive and magnificent. The 2007 Pesenti Zinfandel is a pure fruit bomb but also showing a lot of structure and tannins. This wine will cellar nicely for several more years. If tried now it needs a serious decant. After a few hours in the glass you will get the typical "Turley experience". This wine is close to as good as a zinfandel can get. Highly recommended.

This wine was firing on all cylinders - a wonderful expression of the zinfandel grape with a great balance for ripe fruit and earthy tones. While this wine will be great for another couple of years, we don't see further cellaring improving upon what we just tasted.

Very enjoyable Zin from this storied vineyard. Dark-purple and nearly opaque in color. Texture is thick and rich, with high glycerin content. But is was not goopy or syrupy in the slightest. This was a kick-butt Zin experience, that could really make itself the center of the discussion. Went decent with food, but actually much more enjoyable on it's own. Turley always offers a unique Zin experience, which is nice because we don't come across bottles in the store every day.

Color of purple ink. Classic Zin nose of minerals, stainless steel, blackberries, raisins, cherry and plum. A huge fruit-bomb of a wine. Not much acid, but loads of black fruits. The "metallic" edge of a young zin faded as it opened up. Allowed some of the more complex earth and fruit nuances to show themselves. Zins aren't usually my thing but this is a very nice wine.

The nose on this wine is very delicious, revealing notes of blackberry jam and a blueberry pie/crisp filling. I also get a little cinnamon stick and milk chocolate. However forward the nose is with its pure fruit, though, it smells very one dimensional and is quite hot.
I find the palate of this wine much more rewarding than the nose. Blueberry pie filling and subtle milk chocolate flavors carry over from the nose, and there is a really nice tart cranberry transition in the midpalate. This Zin finishes very smooth with notes of creamy oak. Not the most complex wine by any means, but a real pleasure to drink (in small amounts...boy is it heavy!)

so tight, so tight. Acid levels off the chart. Good food wine as opposed to most Turleys that are pure cocktails. This one was best after 4 (four!) days in the fridge, after i had forgotten I opened it. Will wait two years before opening again.

Warm black plum tones with scents of berry and fresh cracked pepper. A unique style offering dark raspberry notes, with spicy mixed berry and red cherry. This Turley has a creamy texture and smooth, rich mouthfeel. A long finish marked by black peppercorns. This wine seemed to be lacking somewhat and needs some time in the bottle to come together, and was the least interesting in the flight. Turley tasting room - Paso Robles Harvest Festival.

A very green Zin, which is intriguing. Tartness, black pepper, bell pepper, a longish finish that's a bit hollow. Not overdone on one hand, and alcohol heat on the other. Disjointed and not what I'd expect from this bottle at this price.

From a Paso Robles vineyard planted in 1923. A great year for wine lovers and a good year for print journalism. Time Magazine hits the stands for the first time in March.
15.9% alcohol. Dark but crystalline ruby red. A sumptious nose of red and black fruit. Very rich and balanced palate highlighted by plums, rasberries and cherry. Lingering aftertaste.
This Paso Robles Vineyard is turning into one of my very favorite historic vineyards. Consistently excellent!

Deep woody tones make up the majority of the aroma. Blackberry, black tea, and a touch of pepper also seem to show through pretty strongly, with blueberry and plum jam, rose bush, and caraway emerging with a spin in the glass.
Nicely rich and full bodied, this wine is instantly shows fresh blackberry and spiced, raspberry sauce flavors. There is a toast and tar component combined with a hint of leather moving into the mid palate. The tannins are firm and gripping, but have a certain waxy quality about them that is reminiscent of eating a dark chocolate bar. Rose wood and sap appear on the finish and seem to never cease. This wine is beautifully bright, while still maintaining a substantial amount of depth. I could see it evolving significantly over the next three to five years. Very well done and absolutely worth trying.

From a Paso Robles vineyard planted in 1923. A great year for wine lovers and a good year for fantasy. Roy and Walt Disney founded the Walt Disney Company in September.
15.9% alcohol. Dark but crystalline ruby red. Expressive red fruit and floral aromas. On the palate, a blast of concentrated rasberry and wild cherry with a touch of spice. Great concentration, focus and purity. No alcohol detected. Excellent balance. A classically delicious Turley old vine zinfandel.

Aerated and then decanted for an hour. Expressive nose of blackberry and raspberry jam. Jammy on the front end with lots of berries, but a bit of acid to hold it together, then a huge kick of oak, pepper, and spice on the back end. This has more complexity to it than the Juvenile or the Old Vines. A monster of a wine.

Bright, dark ruby. Huge nose of blackberry and black cherry fruit, jammy, with cinnamon and clove. A fruit bomb on the palate, same dark berry fruit from the nose plus raspberry. Smooths out remarkably well on the midpalate onward, cinnamon and baking spice add depth to the ever present fruit. Finish features sweet tannins with pleasing texture, mildly tart berry notes, and a nice touch of acidity which leaves the mouth watering for more. The result is a fruit bomb that's extremely smooth on the palate and avoids becoming goopy or overly jammy. It's still a little too heavy for me, but undeniably good stuff.

Vibrant ruby in color with the alcohol giving rise to long tears in the glass. Very strong notes of pepper and fruit on the nose with hints of spice and earth; nice balance of fresh fruit, tannin and acidity; the high alcohol level is concealed relatively well, yet at the same time is present in sufficient fashion to expose its Paso style. I highly recommend this wine.

Best Turley Zin that I've had in a long time. Pure, fresh black berry and black cherry flavors. Not the most complex, but a blast of fresh fruit scents and flavors supported by velvety tannins and ample acidity to keep it in balance. Long, lingering finish. Great with braised short ribs. Decanted 7 hours before serving.

This is a wonderful wine. It has deep, pronounced, longlasting legs. Its color is a deep ruby red reminescent of some of the better well aged ports. Its color also is rainbow in like in the sense that I count 5 and even 6 or more different hints of red as I view it in the glass. The nose reminds me of the sweet tart candies that I used to enjoy in my childhood, with a pleasant backdrop of soil and limestone. The wine is still relatively young and opens up in taste after about 1 hour of aeration in the bottle. Those tastes are a bouquet of fruit with an extraordinary sense of spices. The aftertaste lasts for 60 seconds or longer after the first few mouthfuls and even longer afterwards. I remember this wine when Turley first offered it to me in 2000. Turley had just bought the Pesenti Vineyards and that wine, the 1998 Pesenti, was a remarkable mix of fruit and terroir deserving of a score of 97+. To my palate, Turley has never been able to replicate that wine in its subsequent Pesenti releases. The 2007 Pesenti, however, is one step closer to that prior trophy vintage.

Freakish combination of rich jammy fruit and hyper acidity. An awesome zin, loaded with unctuous, huckleberry fruit. Never tiring thanks to taut tannin and refreshingly crisp acid. Lots of heat, but in typical Turley fashion, it just propels the jam and woodsy spice out of the glass. This youngin needs a couple hours of air to unfurl. I've been on a roll with great series of clean, prototypical Turley bottles. Great juice.

Popped and poured - tight at first, needed about an hour to bloom; beautiful "Zin" colored, medium bodied wine; brambly fruit, a hint of clove on the nose; dark fruits, baking spices, a little pepper on the tongue; fine tannins, decent acidity, medium finish. The fruit carried the alcohol well, this was listed as 15.9% ABV and wasn't hot. Overall a very pleasant bottle.

One of the better Turley Zins I've had in a while. Surprisingly, the 15.9% alcohol was well buffered by the mass of fresh, ripe, black fruits. Velvetly in the mouth, with excellent length. The tannins keep the fruit in check, but given the alcohol level, I wouldn't want to age this too long. I would enjoy it for its current exuberance.

15.9% ABV. This Turley Pesenti Zin is dark garnet with a hint of tawny in the glass, somewhat translucent. It has an effusive clove spice cinnamon nose with Zinberry undercurrent. Rich and sweet on the attack with flavors of raisins and dried figs with perhaps a hint of maple. Bordering on full bodied, this is fairly round with some late tangy raspberry fruit underneath. For me the raisin quality is a bit of a detractor and it is showing a bit of alcohol. Pretty good overall.

Cedarman (Napa, Howell Mountain) – 88.4
Surprisingly, Howell Mountain, where Outpost makes its great zin, did not fare well as an appellation. Not surprisingly, Paso Robles did very well.
This wine was one of my tops; I personally gave it a 92.

One of the better Turley Zins I've had in a while. Surprisingly, the 15.9% alcohol was well buffered by the mass of fresh, ripe, black fruits. Velvetly in the mouth, with excellent length.
