2007 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline

Community Tasting Notes

Community Tasting Notes (50) Avg Score: 95.5 points

  • Classic Guigal. Dark red fading to brick in the glass. Nose is bacon grease, bloody game, and strawberries with faint hints of eucalyptus.

This was popped and poured and it put on decent weight in no time. Taste was more of the same. A bbq in a glass.

  • Popped and poured, drinking for 6 hours.
Medium garnet with brick edge. The nose has flowers, coffee, meaty/gamey notes, black berries, musk, and a hint of sweet orange. Medium to medium-plus body with medium acidity, silky tannin, and integrated oak. The finish is rich and long. The only thing lacking is complexity, but who can ask for more in a 2007 vintage?

  • Drank. Most feminine/tasty of the trio, but would be much better with more age/development.

  • Popped and poured my second (and unfortunately last) bottle of this wine. Much better than my previous bottle, as this has all the characteristics I tend to associate with these "La Las." Gorgeous appearance, black-ruby with one hell of a lot of viscosity apparent on the bowl of the glass. On the nose, has what I was hoping/expecting to smell: bacon fat, smoke, and meat/game scents. The definition of animalistic. I absolutely will save some of this for tomorrow because it seems sure to reach even greater heights with more air time. All of these things show up in the mouth as well. Wow! This is drinking well but it still is fairly primary, with decades of life ahead, surely. Now THIS is what I thought I would get out of a bottle of this wine. Very few Rhone wines approach these heights. 5-14-17-10: 96/100.

Next day, 20 hours later: This has gotten even more impressive, with more meat, smoke, bacon fat, game in both nose and mouth, but it has also gotten silkier somehow; glassine. For that reason, I have adjusted my score, because I think this wine is surreal. It is miles better than the bottle I had earlier this year. What a treat! 5-14-18-10: 97/100.

  • Popped and poured. This got better as it sat in the glass. Still, slightly disappointing as it falls a bit short of both others' experiences and my own expectations given this wine's stellar reputation. Strong opaque black-red with glorious legs. Nose more floral than I would have expected, with only hints of the anticipated meaty, smoky, bacon fat I was hoping for. Nice and rich in the mouth, but again too primary for a 17 year-old Cote-Rotie. Going to leave this in the glass overnight to what transpires.

Revisiting this the next day, I can't say it has really improved alot. There's loads of dark fruit, but little in the way of meaty, smoky or bacon fat like I expected and hoped for. The nose on this is more chocolate/cocoa/shoe polish/briar. Disappointing, to say the least, as this is supposed to be right in the middle of its drinking window, and was purchased from a shop with a provenance guarantee. 5-11-15-7: 88/100.

  • Wow! Had this alongside 2004 Barolo. The Barolo was really good, but this wine absolutely knocked my socks off. Exceptional.

  • The nose was quite exotic, gamey, eucalyptus, bacon fat & black fruits. There were a few things I couldn't pinpoint as well.
The palate was gamey, black fruits, bacon fat, and earth in a full body with lots of minerality in medium acidity & bigger tannins with some very nicely integrated oak & a long finish. This is still a touch young & a little tight. I've had a lot of wine but definitely nothing like this before.

    Too bad, bummer et… zut!

Vakkert.

  • Opened in the bottle all day and decanted a bit half way through. Similar to the La Turouqe the palate seems close to mature with olive brine, dark fruit, smoke and cured meat. The structure is still firm and grippy so likely still plenty more complexity to emerge with time. Slightly softer than Turque.

  • Tasted blind. I called it Hermitage but after it was revealed, Cote Rotie made sense. As it opened up, the nose was beautiful and the finish was classic old world Syrah... Loved it.

    Grand vin bravo

  • COVID-19 in the Rear-View Mirror...with Lots of Dom Perignon (Park Ridge Country Club): Late night, brief note. If the 2004 La Turque was too young, this was simply crazy. Gobs of dense, ripe, bright black fruit that are just too primary for me to enjoy right now. But still so long and powerful hinting at its great 93-95+ point potential, 2027-2057?

  • This wine is stunning. Beautiful vintage and classically style this wine exemplifies what a cote rotie should be! Drinking beautifully now but will age as well

  • Guigal Cote-Rotie La Mouline 2007.
    Begynner å løsne litt.
Noen år til her så er vi sonen.
Særdeles konsentrert frukt av topp kvalitet.
Sinnsyk lang finish med breiale tanniner.
    Tåler laaang kjellertid.

  • Great wine, bit darker in the fruit than 2011 and I certainly prefer the more red than dark fruit profile, yet still this was a fantastic wine. Packing a lot for the future for sure so this wine can easily be opened in say 10 years time.

  • This wine immediately had aromas of dark chocolate, black cherries and smoke. The taste was rich, smoothe, smoky meat. 97-98 at that point. We unfortuately made the mistake to not drink the wine right away. As the wine decanted, it progressively became very tannic and lost its beautiful smoke flavor. It took 3 hours plus to decant enough to loose some of the tannins, but was never the same. So dissapointed. If we could go back, pop the bottle, pour a glass and enjoy right away. Otherwise this needs time

  • Superbe bouteille!

  • A bit unusual, yet elegant and balanced. Delicate nose, a bit peppery on the tongue. Very smooth.

  • LaLaLa tasting #6:

89% Syrah, 11% Viognier. 40-42 months on 100% new oak. Old vines. While clusters, meceration with traditional pump over (remontage), no pressing down.

First vintage produced in 1966, supposed to have been similar in style since the start.

Young and vibrant nose with floral notes, red berries, pickled strawberries, violet, cloves, glogg, oriental spices, tar and chocolate.

Fresh mouthfeel, beautiful acidity, grippy tannins, concentrated but elegant. 95p, huge potential!

  • elegant and smooth with a little bit of funk and exotic overtones that are lovely. Initially still hints of oak that are quite well integrated. Quite open now.

  • This was young... and delicious. Pretty powerful stuff. The oak does hit you first but it is well married, if slightly distracting. There is lovely Syrah character - olive, bacon as well as dark fruit. I don’t regret opening it but boy another 10 years and this should be really complex... worth the wait!

  • A night of awesome wine (67 Pall Mall): Really lovely wine in a pretty crazy line-up ('82 Margaux, '92 Monte Bello, '97 Grange) which leads me to believe these wines can compete with any in the world. What I love the most about this is the contrast between the power and the finesse. There's an elegance to these (prob due to the Viognier) that keeps the Syrah in check. Violets although with the black fruits. A bit of smokiness. A young wine which was drinking just beautifully.

  • Four hour decant, this is top shelf syrah, with a nose that is deep, dark fruit, sweet vanilla, tobacco and black olives. The palate is long and rich with amazing staying power with dark fruit, black olive, leather, light cloves and well balanced, finely grained tannins and slightly bracing acidity. The bar has been set high by this particular bottle.

  • Beautiful. Buttery, wonderful, smooth and worth giving it a try. The nose is wonderful and full. Legs and a nice ruby color. Buttery pepper notes with a hint of deep cherry. This wine is pretty amazing and one of the top I’ve had the pleasure of trying.

  • Beat your 2017 WOTY Dinner: An inviting nose, really open and lifted aromas of tobacco, blueberry, licorice, five spice, earthy notes and black cherry. Full and rich fruit shows through on the palate, with plenty of depth to go along with it. Has good texture as well, keeping the fruit power from feeling one dimensional. Super wine with plenty more to give in the coming years.

  • Only my second La, La, La (previsoulsy the Landonne 2004) and a very good wine, yet I must say that syrah does not excite me.
Quite a lot of meat, blood and so on, but the syrah grape does not provide an exciting palate compared to Bordeaux or Bourgogne.
Needs several hours (3-4) in the decanter, at this stage.

  • Full, generous, ready nose. Blackberries and gently oaky with elegant vanilla spice. Very generous and tremendous fruit. Rich with violets, tobacco, liquorice and perfume. Minerally depths. Complex snd multidimensional.
Still youthful with some development. Concentrated, full and oaky. Tremendous grip and persistence. Elegant and reminds us of top-Bdx. With air more flowers and violets appear. There is a stunning concentrated lightness.
Of the three La-La-La's this was the most complex and the group's favorite.

  • Checking in on the 2007 La La's. Medium ruby, lightest color of the three. Nose of red fruit, cherry, smoke, leather, a touch of horse stable. Overall appealingly complex. Enters the palate with medium body and quite sharp acidity, not nearly as dense as the other two. I often find la Mouline the weakest wine of the three. I am usually a fan of the more feminine style of the Cote Blonde but feel La Mouline sometimes has too much acidity for the body. Anyway, I am nit picking here on a high level. Gladly this bottle did better and better as it sat in the glass and pointed towards its potential. 2h decant or better wait till after 2020.

  • Clean and clear, deep garnet colour and very concentrated. Developing

on the nose it's clean with medium+ intensity and aromas of; Smoke, smoked and cured ham, pepper, blackberries, fig jam, minerals that reminds me of iron and blood. Developing.

On the palate it's dry with medium+ aciddity, medium ripe tannins, medium+ % and high body and flavour intensity. Palata was alot like the nose with smoked and cured ham, hanged meat, pepper, blackberries, timian, smoke, oak. Medium+ lenght

This is a powerfull and very concentrated wine. well balanced but needs some cellartime to show of it's true potential, it's quite raw at this point. Complex but a littlebit onesided, no aromas which suprised me. It's the concentration is what impresses me the most, but i have to admit i prefer the La Turque from 2007 over this one. 93-94p

  • Served blind; Darker core; white pepper wows, toasty vanilla, elegant, polished, mix of plush red and dark berry, violets, deep and noble; velvety texture on the palate, good acidity, sweet and sour fruit, similar favors as nose, precise, deep, hedonistic though great focus, more air brought out more texture and mineral in an otherwise seamless and silky wine, great balance; hauntingly good, got craving for it again roughly 30 hours after drinking; a baby-sure-but the integration of the oak and overall juiciness makes this a nice drink now.

  • Amazing...everything you expect from Cote-Rotie...elegant but clear notes of Syrah...drank side by side last night with 2005 Cayuse...made Cayuse look like a 80's punk party...

  • Almost Burgundian. Feminine compared to 1997 La Landonne. Gorgeous fruit, some dark cherry on the nose, lighter bodied and a 90 second finish

  • Guigal Château d'Ampuis - complete vertical tasting of 1995-2009 (Stockholm): Medium red, rather compact colour. Nose with blackberries, ripe cherries, cloves; after some time in the glass mint notes emerge. Palate with blackberries, ripe cherries, powerful concentration, pepper, powerful but well embedded and velvety medium+ tannins. A large-size wine on the palate, but young; it is somewhat drinkable now, but isn't fully open for business and indicates that it is in a "dumb phase", give it time, 94+ p.

This wine is slightly more flowery and more elegant than the 2007 Château d'Ampuis, but currently more discrete in the nose. When I tasted this wine about a year ago it was more expressive, so it has obviously closed down more than the 2007 Ampuis since then.

  • Sloppy Seconds Mondo Tasting (Bin 75): Almost exact notes to the previous bottle but my impression was more of 96 than a 97 on September 27th. Obviously extremely young and lots of potential, but this drinks really well with a few hour decant. Had to bring this to tonight's tasting because of the craving I experienced after the last time- had to get my fix.

  • Keith's 50th Birthday Celebration (Bin 75): 2nd bottle; dark red with dull ruby rim; intoxicating perfume of sexy new oak, perfumed, violets, vanilla, black pepper; so layered on the palate, delicious, dark fruit, so long, tasty; more of an elegant vintage where the fruit and richness were in harmony with the oak; young but drinking so well; should prove to be 100 points eventually; was tasting and craving this 3 days later at 10:00 AM like a crack fiend.

  • In a tasting of 6 WS/RP 100-pt wines, this was one of two that unambiguously met the standard.

  • This is one comparative tasting note for La Mouline, La Landonne and La Turque 2007. (Of course) all three wines are still very youthful. All three have beautiful herbs and spices (garrigue) in the bouquet. La Mouline showed some tea as well (but not of the old age kind), beautiful fruits and oaky flavors. The bouquet of La Landonne showed salty licorice, cherry liquor and some green bell peppers as well. In La Turque the fruits were most ripe in the bouquet and combined with the garrigue and the beautiful oak, the most complex and open of the three at this moment. On the palate La Mouline showed its youthfulness again with beautiful spiciness, oak, a firm amount of acidity and good tannin. For La Landonne it is the same, but here the tannin is the most sticky of the three. La Turque has most sweetness and beside that very juicy acidity, good tannin and an enormous length. Overall La Mouline is the most elegant of the three. La Landonne still the most locked, but with a great length and future. La Turque is the most open for business and because of the sweetness the most easy to like at this moment. It is probably wise not to touch a bottle before 2025 and start with La Turque, then La Mouline and save La Landonne for last. My scores of the day were: La Turque 97, La Mouline 96+ and La Landonne 95++. It could well be that a decade (or two) from now La Landonne shows to be best.

  • Well it shows the hand of Guigal. And impressive that hand is to me. Next to the Landonne (and the other, but corked) this has some of the high floral violet of the Allemand Cornas but none of the earthy underlayment of the Landonne. Back with secondary -- meat and violet and built.

And on the palate: total harmony on entry and mid, back end is savory, aciditic and tannic. Just needing time. Has everything to harmonize that further, finish is minutes long now, just needs years to bring itself into focus. Clearly someone of mastery made this wine. A hint of medicinal on the palate.

  • Decanted for 2 hours. Powerful aromatics of black cherry and berry with sweet oak and a lot of dark spices. Very meaty and dense. Crushed stone with some floral peeking through in the back. Rich and concentrated on the palate as well, but with a firm core of minerality. Full bodied with a very long, gripping finish. Fantastic and has a long life ahead.

  • Red 2007 Guigal Masterclass (Stockholm): Rather dark red colour, slightly faded edge. Nose with dark berries, balsamico notes, noticeable flowery and perfumed notes (that are more powerful than in the other 2007 Côte-Rôties), mild spice, a hint of leather, graphite and mineral, well integrated oak; a powerful and very elegant nose. Full bodied, sweetness of fruit in the attack, dark berries, spice, balsamico notes, rather powerful tannins of a very supple and velvety character. Long and fruity aftertaste with some tannin. Young but approachable. 94+ p

  • Wow! Now this is what I'm talking' about! The nose just jumps from the glass showing such amazing purity of dark fruit, violets and gamed meats. The palate is so amazingly open for a young Guigal La La with a laser like snap of white pepper, beautifully integrated oak, sweet silky tannins and amazing SQN like purity of fruit. Absolutely unmistakable syrah at it's absolute finest. If I didn't set the 100pt score so high up on an unreachable pedestal....this wine would get it. By far the finest Guigal I've ever had and hands down beats the 88, 91, 95 and 03 Mouline and that's saying something.
