A bottle that I've been waiting on for nearly 20 years, and the bright ruby color was a good indication of what was to follow. Opened at a restaurant 1.5 hours prior to enjoying with the meal. Lots of red fruits remained balancing the notes of lingering youth with tertiary markers of earth, iron, and at times, a hint of burnt brown sugar. The wine was lifted by good acidity and very polished, though still evident tannins. The only nit was perhaps a lack of some density that I had been expecting from d'Angerville's flagship wine, still a very complete premier cru burgundy and a worthy complement to the meal, especially the duck.

Decanted this and it needed it. Started off closed and tight. But after an hour this warmed up a bit and became just gorgeous. Really fine and precise red fruit, polished, structured and nuanced. Great year, great producer and great site. A Volnay for the long haul.

2024 New Year's Day Double Blind Tasting: Single-blind as I knew the wine because it was my back-up bottle. I must admit... I was expecting more from this wine. Slightly reductive but restrained nose. Sweet cherry red fruit. A little flat and boring. It did get better the more I swirled it in the glass.

Surprisingly dark translucent ruby. Nose of sharp crushed berry, effusive soaring violets, hints of iron filings and earth. Layers of remarkably fresh, vivid raspberry and black cherry fruit cut with molecular iron and iodine on the satiny palate. Brilliant acidity (still!) and filed off tannin. Long, echoing finish of red berry, pliant earth, and anchoring stone. This wine shows so much youth and exuberance today. Truly outstanding.

2002 Beaune and Volnay Premier Crus (San Francisco): Brighter ruby, watery rim. Lovely, beautiful poised aromatics with a balance of fruit and herbs. Medium weight. Subtle, complex, gently sweet, excellent acidity, low remaining tannins, and a long, lingering finish. Less overtly mineral than the Taillepieds. What can I say? As good as the exalted reputation of the site. The most Burgundian nose and the most complete wine of the day. A great way to finish up the red wine portion of the tasting.
Even better the second night-lacier, spicier, fresh strawberry fruit. A great Volnay.

Hints of rim bricking but otherwise youthful appearance. Subtle, lovely aromas of cherry and strawberry conserves initially that are buttressed with anise and licorice scents given air time. Mature flavors of similar, red plum, brown sugar, and grilled mushrooms. Everything in its proper place; concludes with a sweet, fruity finish that pairs admirably with a variety of foods. In the zone.

First bottle of a new case and this was so much different than my last experience. Brilliant nose of fresh strawberries, crushed stone and touch of mushroom. fresh, full and linear on the plate. Great balance with a lovely stern tension the reminds you that this is Volnay. Loved it.

Very dark purplish-garnet in color, expressing earthy, black cherry, and thyme aromas. Initial, monolithic grilled plum flavor with a twinge of sweetness on the finish that turns more black cherry-blackberry with time. Midway, the nose turns murky, muddy and much less appealing. But then, surprisingly, after 45 minutes, it reverts back to fragrant black, black cherry, lavender, and anise. Give this time after pouring as it goes through a transient funky, off-putting period only to emerge in form that vastly exceeds one’s first impression.

Very clear red ruby in color. Restrained aromas of red berries, florals, spices, hint of mint. Super silky in the mouth showing focused crushed red berries, medium (+) acidity, resolved tannins and a linear floral and spice tinged finish.

Clear and still bright. The scent is firm yet elegant, with great persistence. Elegance in the mouth too, with intensity and very long. Just very majestic, elegant and harmonious. Not as velvety as a Musigny, but with the same iron fist.

Perfumed nose that keeps evolving with time. Sweet cherry syrup, acidic fruit vinegar, tannic spices...I wish I had a larger glass to drink. Savory herbs and baking spices add dimension to the unripe red/black fruits that fill the mouth. A beautiful structure props up this wine and makes it easy to drink despite the complexities.
Really fun to drink - it feels as though its around its peak, so drink up!

[Blind] Has some dusty age at first. Very pronounced pine resin and spice. Pronounced eucalyptus and menthol. Nuanced herbaceous detail made me think it was older, ~99. Red cherry fruit on the palate with tannic structure. Concentrated and tight core. Fruit begins to lighten up and become more lush. Indicative and proper. 92 - 93.

Spicier aroma than the rest of the field, pretty fruit but something was lacking here. We kept expecting it to kick into a higher gear but it never did. Good but not at the level of '99 or '05 today.

Very dark still, and practically opaque. Still quite young, but intense blackberry fruit, balance, smooth texture. Decades of development ahead. Cellared since original release.

Burgundy Mitch's bottle (in Mexico) Double decanted and took to dinner. Soft, captivating, silky and dark. I commented that if served blind i would not have guessed this to be a 2002 as it wasn't as fruit forward, more reminiscent of a tighter vintage such as 97 but a lovely bottle nonetheless. At a great drinking point. (0 views)

91 pts

Beautiful nose. Red fruit with floral notes. Sexy but restrained. Elegant. The palate is red fruited and firm with minerals. It expands on the finish to give tremendous length. Slowly unfolding. Wonderful birthday wine.

Sappy and delicious. Dark red fruits with hints of blueberry, framboise. Good length, tension. Did not develop significantly over 1.5 hours. Quite primary but not convinced it will evolve further. Slightly hot.

Opened and decanted an hour+ before tasting. Black and red cherry with robust spice and subtle floral hints. A powerhouse of a Volnay with roasted meat and lots of power, ending with minerally textures. Started off in its shell, this ever-so-slowly emerged from that shell, but never fully came around. A great wine slowly coming around, 93+ point potential, but not yet there.

I’ve been holding on for many years on a few bottles of this wine. First-Time through tasting and the first impression is mitigated. Not the hype I anticipated... Nice raspberry and currant fruit aromas but unbalanced wine with a lot of acidity. Slightly disappointing too with the relatively short finish. Hope it will improve in the upcoming years.

Tasty but insufficiently expressive - maybe still a bit closed. Beautiful red fruits without much acid or tannin. Great accompaniment to haute cuisine, but not a fine that stands out on its own, which it should be able to do. Hold.

Not in a happy place right now - this was tight and not expressive, not showing the classic red cherry and silky Volnay notes one so often gets with d'Angerville wines. The remaining bottles will have to stay in the cellar and not reemerge for about 10 years.

A true disappointment, especially at the cost. Given the recent reviews and my fondness for the Clos des Ducs, I wonder if it is Private Cellars. Either way, this wine was showing excess acid initially and then devolved into a pleasant but not very expressive Volnay with some hard edges and no warmth. Some bright red fruit on top of the deep Volnay body, little on the nose, and an occasional sweet turn of red plum, cherry, briar and oak.

Really nice. This wine is not one of my absolute favorite Burgs, but in good years it is a very solid wine and shows great typicity. Crunchy red fruit. Well-judged medium body. Very nice as a food wine. No hurry...this should last a long time yet.

Aucune note oxydative. Parfait!

Tasted this wine last Spring and loved it. This bottle seems way too young. Unmistakably Ducs, with it's tell tale rocky nose. Very aloof. Red fruit on the palate. Got better with decanting, but I'd wait for a number of years before opening another.
375ml, decanted 2 hours. Still too young, but mellowing. Drunk alongside a half bottle of the 1999. A slightly diffuse lightish colour, watering at the rim. (The 1999 is firmer, deeper and sharper in appearance.) Initially quite dumb, but opened up after a half hour in the glass. Complex Volnay perfume, but still a bit one-dimensional on the palate. Some flowers, latterly some intense strawberries, still some acidity, and a touch of tannin. On the whole, very pleasant now, but probably much more to come, when my score is likely to go up. Leave for another 3 years. However, tonight the 1999 is altogether the bigger, more thrilling wine.

I'd ordinarily hesitate to open a Clos de Ducs at a restaurant, but 2002 is a pretty generous vintage. The wine is glorious. Premier Cru volume but Grand Cru refinement. Silky tannins and vibrant red fruit. Interesting contrast with the 2002 Barthod Cras I opened recently. That wine was boundlessly mineral and energetic while this one was was more focused but probably just as long. Not too much secondary development at this point because....well....it's Clos de Ducs. Still, a real pleasure to drink for a fruit expression that's probably rarely found outside of Burgundy. This will be even better in 3-5 years as more secondary development kicks in.

Young Marquis d'Angerville Volnay Clos des Ducs Dinner (Formento's - Chicago IL): Backward when first tasted, so we decanted, which clearly helped. Red and black cherry throughout with very good density. Subtle spice and floral hints, while showing very mineral-driven textures. More burly than I expect from Volnay. In fact if served blind, I might have thought Corton Grand Cru. Last glass was the best. Still needs more time in the cellar.

Soft and supple strawberry and mineral. There's complexity in the mouth without any intrusive tannins, but the fruit doesn't quite stand up to the acidity on the finish. I doubt this improves from here.

Best bottle so far. Two years ago this was still lean and closed. Today it was singing. Open and forward classic nose, I guessed Gevrey (!) as it was quite dark and full. Not as many red fruits and flowers, more dark cherries and earth. It had a whiff of tertiary aromas at the end of the spectrum, so we guessed 2005 due to the inner sweetness and tannins. Very positive surprise when we learned that it was a 2002 D'Angerville as these have been hard as nails after they closed down in 2004. Dense with strong fruit and acidity in balance but also some unresolved tannins. Will be totally open in 2-3 years and then remain there for some years.

Mainly Pinots Dinner with Peter Rosback: An attractive, aromatic bouquet of dark spices, red cherries and raspberries. Very Volnay. In the mouth, dense and heavily structured. Serious matière and architecture. The tannins and racy acids come to the fore on the long finish. I guessed the wine as 2006 and thought it really needed another 10 years to fully integrate. Decanted and followed for 3 hours. Light to medium ruby color. Seriously compelling nose of sharp, spiky mulberry scents laced with pine forest, iodine, alpine flowers, thyme, and earth. Medium-bodied on the palate, showing incisive currents of red raspberry, mulberry, underbrush, schist, and anise. Still possessed of youthful acidity while tannins were smoothed off for the most part. Long, lingering finish of red fruit, earth, stony bits, and grip. This may be in its adolescence but it was truly impressive and delicious tonight. Wow.

Lots of sediment in the bottle but none in the glass, this was a pure, clean expression of pinot fruit. cherry, plum and a hint of spice, this wine is now fully mature and unlikely to improve from here, although there is plenty of structure for another 10 years of exquisite pleasure.
If a date, this was a stunning 25 year old beauty who ignores your repeated sexual innuendo throughout dinner and repeats her steadfast belief how important it is she saves her virginity until she's married.

PnP and drank about an hour later. Complex, layered, long and red fruited with great focus and minerality. Unfortunately, only entering its prime drinking window. Miles to go before this truly rocks. No forest floor yet but this should be awesome around 2020-2025. I'll hope for some discipline and drink my last around 5-7 yrs from now when I'm 65-70 yrs old. Wow. Very young and primary still, but the purity and finesse here make this really compelling. A core of sappy red fruits accented by gentle floral, earthy and baking spice notes, with a stony mineral undercurrent and bright acids keeping it very fresh and light on its feet. Nice wine and drinking well now, but I don't see what all the fuss is about. Does not come close to the finest wines of the vintage. Take this with a grain of salt if you like...after many years of experimenting, I'm reaching the conclusion that Volnay is not my preferred "flavour" of Burg. For the price of this I'd much rather have any number of Cote de Nuits 1er and even Grand Crus.

Devin's Surprise Birthday Party (Q4 - Vancouver, BC): Nice nose showing a burst of ripe raspberry aromas, along with black cherries, blueberries, spice, a hint of prunes and some leafy mint notes. There's tons of cooling menthol on the palate, as well as some rich ripe black cherries, black pepper spice, blueberries, and herbs. Plenty of firm drying acidity on the finish. While this is certainly a delicious and well made wine it was rather boring and lacked the excitement I was hoping for, especially at this level. Very good
This is really great Volnay Ducs! As many other 2002 red burgundies, this is also drinking very well. The wine has great complexity even though it's still mainly backed by primary notes. The 10y in bottle contributed to mellow the soft tannins and add some tertiary notes. Great structure and rich fresh Pinot fruit will take this very far. Long finish.

Lovely, but just at the start of its drinking life. 37.5cl, pulled out as a comparison with a similar half bottle of the 1999 from a few nights ago, which was withdrawn and unyielding. This is much softer, lighter coloured, gentle, classy but caressing, and more or less ready to go. Very good lightish Volnay, but not in the class of the (frustratingly stubborn) 1999.

you can say what you like about the ephemeral qualities of this wine and the raspberry notes etc. the fundamental problem is that this wine is light! it would be light for a village wine from an ordinary vintage, but for a grand cru from a good vintage it is unforgivable!!! to believe this was value for money you would have to believe that tulip bulbs were value for money in amsterdam back in the day. hopefully a one off but not encouraging as I can't see how it can gain body

Classic Angerville Volnay -- with acknowledgements to some insightful earlier tasting notes: Initially, on the nose: red fruits (fraises de bois for me, but raspberries are plausible too), slightly compote-d, with a strong sense of iron/metal (another note described this as iodine). In the mouth, quite linear, with tannins present but integrated (very slightly dry at first), good length and acidity, finish with a hint of concentration / eucalyptus ('iron fist in velvet glove' comes to mind). One hour in, the wine is evolving and beginning to show its stuff. Nose now adds layers of green pepper and violets; mouth has a lovely creamy texture a bit more sweetness than before. Wine is oozing with class, but it's very early in the drinking window still. I'd guess peak drinking is still 10 years away. Note: evidence of very slight seepage through the cork, which doesn't seem to have affected the wine. I note this as two other tasting notes note the same thing.

Popped and poured. Ruby red color. Nose of intense florals and raspberry compote with hints of iodine. Bracing red raspberry fruit on the palate with austere tannins and lots of structured grip, then a wash of sweetness and stony minerals on the long, satisfying finish. Brisk acidity all around. Fuller and brasher than the 1996 sampled last year, but just as disciplined ultimately. Sampled very young but I like the way it's headed.

It is an absolute monster, particularly compared to many 2002s I have had recently that have a pronounced softness to them, it will be dynamite when it is fully developed. If you have some of this, I wouldn't touch it for ten years if you like more developed wines. If you like muscle bound Pinot, try one now, it actually worked quite well with Duck as well as Kobe steak, cutting through any sense of fat with ease.

Fascinating to compare to the '05 tasted last night. Lighter, more transparent color. Here, the nose tends toward licorice and black fruit, with the faintest secondary perfume beginning to show. Even lighter in weight than the younger wine, this is leaner and more shy, with its focus provided by great acidity rather than tannin. Thrilling in its delineation, perhaps less seductive than the '05, but make no mistake, this just kept improving steadily over the course of 2 hours, developing an intriguing faded rose florality in addition to its pristine fruit. Another classic.

This is significantly more open than it was a year ago- incredible nose with blueberries, violets, sea salt and an intriguing mocha thing. The palate is impeccably balanced- a whack on entry that eases off into real grace that gives the impression of a sphere. Incredible wine.

typical light color for this wine. Nose didn't reveal much- hints of blueberries and violets. The palate has subtle, elegant tones of bluebrries and a wonderful mineral streak that seems held with a a coiled spring. A fascinating glimpse of this wine that is somewhat shutdown but has a wonderful future.

Opened as spur of the moment comparison to the Alesia 2004's. Due to spontaneity, decanted but drank right away. Initially ripe but very muted fruit on the nose. Medium bodied, very little complexity. Medium finish. .. not drinking well. Three hours later: Extremely pure aromas, darker fruits, coffee, very perfumed. Stays perfumed in the mouth ... everything's there (acidity, fine tannins, minerality) but still somewhat subdued. Tightens on the finish with a strong mineral component coming through.

Volnay Dinner with Lieu-dit Cru (Kevin Restaurant, Chicago IL): Incredibly concentrated nose shows dark fruit and a cupboard full of spices. Red fruit continues on to the palate, which is a bit dense and structured today. Minerality and acidity take center stage from middle to the end, with dark spiced fruit coming out on the very long, powerful finish. Hold to 2015 or later. I liked this more than most others tonight.

from .375. lovely pinot color- the nose was intense cherries and nothing else- extremely pure fruit. The palate flvors were more of the same with a grip and intensity that was surprising for Volnay, although theer is real grace here as well. This attracks on entry all the way through the palate and then rebounds back through the mouth- incredible. After about an hour, the tannins overtook the wine and shut it down completely. I can't imagine the heights this will reach.

Decanted for two hours. Brilliant medium ruby red. Deep, rich nose with loads of berries .. blackberries, rasberries, candied cherry. Pure aromas but not terribly complex as yet. Very primary. Incredibly balanced medium bodied mouthfeel. Not powerful but complete with a good sense of detail. The fruit overwhelms the fresh tannins and acid but they are definately present. Builds to a very fresh, sweet, long, balanced (there's that word again) finish that lasts for, well, really a long time loaded with red cherries & rasberries. 3-4 hours into it, the tannins strengthened on the finish but are far from fierce.

Nice raspberry and currant fruit aromas but unbalanced wine with a lot of acidity.
Slightly disappointing too with the relatively short finish.

Very positive surprise when we learned that it was a 2002 D'Angerville as these have been hard as nails after they closed down in 2004. Dense with strong fruit and acidity in balance but also some unresolved tannins. Will be totally open in 2-3 years and then remain there for some years.

Exquisite juice and highly recommended

PnP and drank about an hour later. Complex, layered, long and red fruited with great focus and minerality. Unfortunately, only entering its prime drinking window. Miles to go before this truly rocks. No forest floor yet but this should be awesome around 2020-2025. I'll hope for some discipline and drink my last around 5-7 yrs from now when I'm 65-70 yrs old. Wow. A very pleasant wine right now but much more fireworks down the road if we all have the challenging patience to wait.

Noticeably sweeter on the palate than the 96. Still very young, precise and mineral though it softened quickly (perhaps served a little too warm) to become almost blowsy on the entry at one point. Really good though. I'll leave my case for another 5 years.

Lots of red berry aromas and flavors, slightly lean styled for the ripe vintage but with very good concentration. Great spice throughout with some anise, Herbs de Provence and some fresh thyme. Elongating structure in the background.

Very young and primary still, but the purity and finesse here make this really compelling. A core of sappy red fruits accented by gentle floral, earthy and baking spice notes, with a stony mineral undercurrent and bright acids keeping it very fresh and light on its feet. There's not much development here, but this is really delicious.

Classic Angerville Volnay -- with acknowledgements to some insightful earlier tasting notes:
Initially, on the nose: red fruits (fraises de bois for me, but raspberries are plausible too), slightly compote-d, with a strong sense of iron/metal (another note described this as iodine).

This was decanted for 1.5 hours and still took about 15 minutes of swirling in the glass to begin to emerge.
