A second time with this vintage and this wine has improved dramatically - it has put on weight and added complexity. Maybe at the same level as the 2001? Entering its drinking window and fine to drink now with 30-60 minutes in the glass.

Bordeaux 2004 20 years on Part 1 (Blacklock City): Ah, sweet music. Strawberries and cream, vanilla custard, just ridiculously good and we had to exclude it from the voting lest something untoward happen….. Why is Sauternes always so good? Apricot, mango, marmalade, oily caramelised sugar, this has simply fabulous intensity without ever being OTT. It is light on its feet, has weight without density, perfectly balanced richness and acidity, the latter making it come alive. A class act that felt a lot younger than it is and has loads in the tank. Brilliant, and a splendid way to finish the dinner - personally I think we can forgive Jerry for straying from the brief!

Jonathan's 2004 horizontal (Blacklock City): Another excellent example: opulent without searing intensity, attractively viscous, gorgeous notes of treacle, apricot and honeycomb. It's a super Sauternes and likely to become even more attractive.

V syrupy. Fruit disguised by the over-sweetness. Two dimensional. Should evolve with age. Try again in 3 years

2004 Bordeaux at Blacklock, City, with NLWTS (Blacklock, City): End of the evening; no proper notes. Incredibly rich. Still super youthful; nothing really remotely tertiary yet and this has miles to go.
