  • Boston Wine & Poker, Lincoln, Mass.: Tasted blind. Philip correctly identified this as Pauillac, but the wine wasn't revealing as much to me. High acidity. High intensity. 24 years and it still needs more time.

  • Excellent bottle and last of 6. There's no rush to drink these now, but you won't be disappointed if you do.

  • Very solid P-C, and this bottle was considerably better than the one I tasted a few years ago. Dark evolved fruit, forest ground and cigar box. 95 with upside.

  • Coravin fun - Bordeaux (My place, Burwood): From Coravin. Blackcurrant, bramble, biscuit, plums, polished oak is integrated, sweet spice, touch of leather and umami. Juicy, similar flavour profile to the nose, tannins are drying, grippy, woody and tight, I think it needs a good decant to show at it's best (or more time)...it's not quite as integrated as I would like it at this juncture though all of the components are present. Touch of non-intrusive alcohol warmth helps extend the finish long. Okay at the mo'.

  • On P&P, I was immediately accosted by that heady "old wine barrel in a cave" scent that to me is what secondary flavors and scents are all about in the best Cabernet based wines, with serious but lovely cow sh*t perfume. I view cow shi*t as the midpoint between the acridity of pig sh*t and the weedy scent of horse shi*t. [As an aside, I like the horse sh*t end of the shit spectrum, but still prefer the middle point of cow sh*t. I don't dig the pig sh*t stank, personally, but I don't view myself as an expert sh*t-sniffer, so my opinions may be sh*t.] So the nose was just effusive, yet there was nothing suggesting the wine was too ripe/overly extracted/too alcoholic/oxidized. The first sip was magical, and it rapidly got better over the hour it lasted. The palate was akin to the brambly St. Juliens I've loved most, crossed with the big boy Pauillacs that get the big scores. On the top, I got beautiful medium cigar box and light cedar, and with time, the copious cassis notes were stunning. Lots of dark, damp earth and surprisingly fresh, deep dark fruit, with minimal residual sweetness. This to me is an outstanding Bordeaux that’s in the middle of its prime drinking window. It speaks to what makes Bordeaux the king of French wines and one of the greatest wine regions in the world.

(Pontet Canet) Beautiful precision and elegance. Reminded me of a baby '00 LLC. Laser-like focus and sweet cassis licoricey fruit. Lots of mineral and cigar box on the nose with very sweet fruit and ripe tannins. Like an undualting wavelength though opening and closing every five minutes . . . but man what fruit. Tremendous juice.

(Pontet Canet) This showed well but not as well as it could. Maybe this was closing down. Classic Pauillac nose of tar, leather, tobacco and a melange of red and black fruits. Even some sweet corn after five minutes in the glass. Dense and delineated with ripe, fat, silky fruit. Very finesse. Fruit takes over your mouth. Good inner mouth aromas and great length.
