Nice nose with a riper fruit flavors, cherry, flowers, and underwood. Well balanced palate with more cherry notes, forest floor, spices, but maybe missing a bit complexity. Good finish.

A Burgundy Evening in New York (Union Square Café): Deep unevolved ruby. Medium to full bodied, sappy but not heavy. Perfectly ripe black and red fruit, a touch of herbs, earth, and gentle, round tannins. Meaty and deep although not especially complex yet. Not only promising but amazingly forthcoming and open for this particular site from this vintage. At least 10 years from entering its peak though.

Natebm-If wine was a portraiture of the winemaker, this would be a painting of an offspring of Godzilla and a Russian general invading Ukraine. Black hue, with uber extracted scents of burnt wood and the darkest fruits, northern rhone like, heavy in the mouth and very primary, with a truckload of fiery , brutal and coarse tannins. I find it not only unfriendly, but below the grand cru terroir level and absolutely not worth the price. Strange winemaking choices here, and first vintage for Nicolas Groffier.

The Groffier Bonnes Mares 2005 appeared unbelievably youthful, burst of dense dark fruits with tight grip tannins. I’ve encountered many 2005 reds have heated fruits and grippy tannins, but this Bonnes Mares is sleek and still has plenty of fruits left, one for the long haul. (91/100)
