Outstanding wines with a couple of last bottles! (Abbot Street, Ngaio, Wellington, New Zealand): Great Chablis at its peak of development. Even at the age of 20, the wine presents visually as a youngster - light straw colour that seemed no older that a 2016 Hanzell Chardonnay drunk just before. As fine as the Hanzell was, the Raveneau was simply in another class - the intensity levels are fabulous, and age has brought a subtle butterscotch note to all of the green fruit, flint, and mineral aspects to the wine. Extremely complex and long, there appears to be no hurry on bottle of this, but it's hard to imagine this improving further!

2002 Burgs (Noize): Shockingly pale and youthful at 20 years old! Really interesting style, with the exotic aromas and cool restraint one often finds in GG Riesling. Elegant and fragrant on the nose, with (an expensive, high-quality) oolong tea, a touch of tropical fruit; I'd have been happy to dab it as perfume. On the palate I found lemon sherbert, sassafrass (I normally don't like that note, but it was harmonious in this instance) and a saline finish, as well as an overall sense of calm, inviting softness. My #3 wine of the night.

Nick A's 2002 Burgundy Horizontal (Table B) (Noizé, London): A fabulous Chablis which on any ordinary night would have had one purring as it unfurled. I think suffered in the Chianti glass it was served in. The nose has a slightly smoky tea character supporting the oyster shell and lemon oil flavours, later there is some freshly sliced William pear and hay. Palate is so well balanced and lasts for a good 20 seconds, there is the faintest suggest of peanut shell too. I don't often comment on appearance but this is very pale and bright, could have been a 5 year old wine rather than a 20 year old. A treat.

Classic wet wool sea shell and lanolin. Incredibly pale colour. Quite a bit of alcohol and heat on the finish.

Lemon curd aromatics, quite clearly Raveneau. Perfect mellowness on the palate with piercing length.
