  • My second of 2 bottles, and this was near perfection. Fully tertiary, this was seamless from head to tail. The nose is a 100 pointer with beef blood and musty leather with deep red cherry popping up in the background. It is liquid velvet on the palate, and my only barrier to a higher rating is the finish which is on the shorter side. That said, for myself, this is the greatest L'Evangile, from the last 50 years, and, at present just ahead of the 1982 and 1998, but I do suspect that this could change with time. 98+

  • Just before the Evangile 1975, we had a Lafleur 1982! And what immediately struck me was the color of the Evangile; the wine still had red shades and no brown background, which you would expect, and it looked younger than the Lafleur. If I hadn't known the year, I would have guessed 1989/90On the nose, there was a sweet note leaning towards marzipan or almond paste, and deeper down, there were also pepper, spice, and tobacco scents. On the palate, the sweetness from the nose was confirmed, making the wine attractive, round, and very pleasant to drink. It paired extremely well with the truffles! The wine is at its peak and already slightly past it.

  • Showing well but totally outclassed by the 76 BV Georges de Latour this night. Very black fruit purply, with black olive notes. Hints of lead pencil that seems almost Left Bank. Violet. Fruit still fresh. Not yet tertiary. A bit of the oaky chalkiness I taste in all 70s Bordeauxs save the 75 Petrus and Mission Haut Brion. But I think it's still probably top 4 in that vintage along with those two and Trotanoy. Not the best tonight but competition was stiff.

  • Sadly one bottle was corked and another oxidized, but a third came through with a powdery raspberry nose, filled with aromatic Perigord truffle and a touch of leather. Succulent, classic Pomerol. I regret only having a couple of ounces of this. Interestingly, the nose was reticent as soon as the cork was pulled, but it unfolded nicely after about 45 minutes in the decanter.
