Objectively a very good wine but a weak Rousseau Beze. Was a bit rough around the edges and pancaked by some of the other great wines (especially the 17 DRC RSV) that we opened alongside it.

4th of 6, decanted an hour, perfect cork and level, flavours as set out in my April 16 note but now fully mature, suave, layered silky fruit if without the energy and excitement expected, little better than the CSJ on this showing, plateau but knowing Rousseau should be good for 15+ years. F+ (18).

From magnum, the 98 Rousseau Beze absolutely shines, easily transcending the reputation of the vintage. The finely detailed, classic spice, wild raspberry, and game notes all show through immediately on the nose; yes, perhaps this doesn’t have quite the resonance of the best vintages, but it’s so satisfying. 95-6

Very pretty red fruits, as usual the purity is exemplary. Lacks the drive and energy of great vintages, the ethereal qualities seen in years such as 05 and 10 are simply absent. A good wine, drinking at peak IMO, but the value would have to be a serious question.

Rousseau Chambertin Clos de Bèze: 1964 - 2014 (Per Se): Nothing like the ‘99 in the preceding glass, soft and quite elegant with a pretty red and blue berry perfume. Cool. Boulders. Not overly intricate or complex, but certainly nice drinking.
