This bottle revealed a captivating evolution throughout the evening. Initially reserved with minimal fruit presence, it offered notes of leather, earth, and cedar. However, after 60-90 minutes in the decanter, it transformed into a delightful expression of dried red fruits, plums, and hints of pencil shavings. While it lacked vigor and vitality, it lingered on the palate, offering a glimpse of its former glory. Although it's on the decline, it was still a pleasure to taste

Great showing for a less than heralded vintage. Perhaps the best 81 I’ve had to date, this bottle was well cared for. The capsule was stained with dried wine externally, but perfect within. Cork came out in one piece with the Durand and the wine poured a fully saturated bricked brown color. Gained weight and balance over the course of 3 hours of air. It’s red fruited, with cinnamon, cranberry, bright acidity. Near fully resolved. Medium finish, only very slightly metallic but that blew off and the wine showed as well as I could have expected or hoped for!

While I enjoy this wine, it's definitely coming down from its peak, should have been drunk 10 years earlier, but still holding up well all things considered.

Ian’s unfashionable 80’s Bordeaux (Piccolino, Liverpool Street Stn, London): Nicely cedary, herbal and with a core of dark red fruit. Softly velvety. Pencil lead too. Savoury with a green streak adding freshness and some complexity. Very satisfying. ****

Capsicums and typical claret. Currants and tobacco leaves. Oaky finish
