Deep garnet, light bricking at the rim. Over the course of its time in the glass, smelled red cherry, violet, forest floor, watermelon rind, a little oak, smoke, tobacco, tea; the taste reprised. Elegant with good balance and fine tannins. Rather delicate mouthfeel and a medium fruity finish.

Volnay with Jasper Morris MW (67 Pall Mall): Gorgeous deep ruby. Some game and subtle smoke on the nose. An enjoyably grippy chew on the palate, with tannins more present than most other wines tonight, and a lovely crisp red-fruited finish.

Second Sunday Group: 2014 Volnay (Jeff's (hosted by Peter)): Double blind. Ruby color. In one word, this is "pretty," and I am immediately smitten. Cherry, clay and florals with a nice earthy undertone. The floral notes become more apparent as this opens in the glass. Medium-bodied; good tannin and acid. Flavors of dark cherry and spice that linger through the finish. Very clean; pure. 92+ pts with plenty of potential. I am immediately thinking Pinot, likely Burgundy, perhaps Chambolle.
My #2, Domino's #1 Group #3, 34 pts

Mavens and Aficionados Burgundy "class" - session two: The Cote de Beaune (Maple and Ash Chicago, Illinois): Wine #5 at the Mavens second Burgundy class focusing on the Cote de Beaune. Not an extensive note on this one: "dark ruby red, earthy, slightly musty undertone" is what I wrote.
