13% alcohol. Very long cork of excellent quality. The colour is translucent and slightly faded. Lovely nose combining vivid red fruit and decayed leaves; some pleasant raisiny aspect adds complexity. Lively in the mouth with great balance in a high pitched mode; very good length and surprisingly good grip. Stylish and elegant; capable of much longer ageing, which should bring further refinement. Very satisfactory, especially in view of the unpromising vintage.

Pop and pour. Tannins still a bit fierce although the excellent balance of savory fruit and wet earth stand up to them. Delicious treat from the golden dung vineyard.

Color is vibrant. Slight tannin in the nose that is not as present in the taste, other than a slightly mild chalkiness/dust. Fruit is predominantly nicely ripe strawberry with a little leather. Nice finish but maybe slightly short.

Opened and slow-oxed for ~4 hours before drinking. The nose is effusive, with the black raspberry that other notes have mentioned, though I also get a touch of a green streak, which may be the vintage or could be some unintegrated oak, I'm not certain. The palate is medium light with a silky texture on the front but some slightly raw tasting acidity showing up on the back end, along with a gentle frame of tannins. This has potential to improve, and while it's drinking well enough at the moment, I think it could stand some additional cellaring for the components to integrate. Update on 1/3 of the bottle recorked and left in the fridge overnight: this holds up very well and seems more integrated, with the acidity poking out less, and the herbal note on the nose less evident. I could you have been more generous the first night.

At first opened and tasted without decant, but determined it was needed. After 1 hour decant the wine became expressive and elegant showing black raspberries, red currants, topsoil, lots of minerals, well integrated acidity and a 2011 grip. No detection of green and vegetal characteristics as can often be found with the vintage. Finishes with good length and balance. Volnay did very well in 2011.
