I agree with another reviewer that this wine is still not past it's prime. I have written about the 2011 Travaglini Gattinara several times, and over the past two days have enjoyed our last bottle. It was quite closed the first day and I assumed it was just old. But tonight it had opened up considerably and was quite accessable, with well-balanced tannin and acid and alcohol and fruit. Quite enjoyable during dinner. I can only guess now, but it seems good for another year, maybe two under the right conditions. This is the most highly rated Traviglini non-reserve 2011 Gattinara when compared with any of their vintages over the past ten years. I see why.

Tight, tannic, peppery right out of the bottle. Allowed to decant, it opened up over the next couple of hours, robust, richly leathery and a little stone fruit, very dry throughout. Just as good a day later, delightful. Does not seem past its prime in any way.

Light to medium ruby color. Pretty nose of sweet wild strawberry, red cherry, floral, and menthol notes. Medium bodied on the palate, slightly astringent and understated.

I have a previous note on this wine from over six months ago. It is still quite good and I agree with other reviewers that there are wonderful light cherry, strawberry and flower aromas, with good minerality. It is a well-balanced wine. But this Nebbiolo appearsto be slowing fading, and I disagree that you can hold on to it for a decade. It is still wonderful on the day the bottle is opened and on the next day as well. It heads slowly south after that, and I suggest drinking what you have this year and the next.

2018 Villa d’Este Wine Symposium – Kelly, RJ, Justin and Kevin's excellent adventure; 11/7/2018-11/11/2018 (Villa D’este, Lake Como): Youthful complex nose displaying bright slightly dry red fruit, dry cherry, cherry liqueur, cinnamon, anise and iron mineral. Nicely integrated palate, nicely layered cherry fruit, silky and polished, perfect amount of acidity and strong iron mineral and a long sweet red fruit and iron driven finish. This is a classic Nebbiolo that will improve for another decade or more.
