Short note - dark and concentrated, blackberries, vanilla (oak), dark plums, dark olives, violets, bellpepper/chilipepper, cherrie/liquorice candy, M+ concentration, body, intensity, medium acidity, medium finish, very complex nose especially, a tad too much oak, probably needs some more time, very good quality, 91p

Deep ruby in the glass. Coonawarra Cab always reminds me of Spanish Cabs (not the most mainstream Cabs on the map, but hey). They always have the varietal expression - capsicum, black fruit, tobacco - but one note stands out, the dirty saddle. It's kinda old, kinda funky, but blends in well with the rest of the profile. Big body, brooding alcohol and high acid. Still unripe tannins. Long finish. Give it 3-4 years in the bottle, will open up graciously.

Lovely Cabernet flavour excellent length with good dusty tannins. Really drinking very very nicely. Opened it with 30 mins breathing time before we started drinking it. Mouth filling and elegant

2013 Yalumba Menzies
I thought this might have been Napa initially such was it’s balance, elegance and oak treatment in such a big and athletic frame.
Muscular full bodied, perfectly coiffed, balanced wine. Big, but dense. Muscular and agile.
High polish and cork, together with its very young age and luxury oak treatment saw me blurt out Menzies before the unveil.
Must have thought I was a Liberal!
This was close to wine of the night for me, and it’s still not yet mid life.
Keep this another 5-7, it’s still quite closed and simple in its powerful persistence.
I’ve not enjoyed a Menzies as much as this one. Excellent to outstanding. Would be better under cork, Yalumba.
