Community Tasting Notes (2)

  • Served blind. Initially, this was a bit cold and without much air so it showed more like a rhone white than a white burg. Seemed oily and waxy too on first taste with what seemed a light anise note. All that in the glass, hell, seemed like white rhone. As it warmed and aired, it started to come into balance, feel more lithe, picked up a smoky note, green apple, lime and medium weight, i.e. it transformed. It became clear to me that it was indeed chardonnay but I had no clue from where. Ultimately, this turned out to be a winner, with balance and a gentle expression yet plenty of flavor. Terrific and no fade here after 30 years.

  • Blind. Wow was I stumped. Went old northern rhone marsanne. I'll explain later...

I knew I was in trouble when this was poured in to the glass. It looked old and I had never seen this color of yellow. It was dark yellow with some florescent green. Clarity was "murky" and I wrote down that it looked like piss to remind myself of the color. What looks like this? Old Riesling? No idea.

Stuck my nose in the stem and it smelled like a plate of charcuterie. Stinky cheese and kielbasa. What the hell, man? If it taste like this I'm out.

Wine showed medium plus acid yet the body was quite heavy. There were fine tannins and a bitter note at the finish. It's oily like a Riesling but some yellow and green apple like a Chardonnay. Extremely high complexity.

After 15 minutes the charcuterie completely disappeared from the nose and the old burg began to emerge from the 30 years of solitary confinement . Even a touch of match / flint started poking through. Really became special.

To do this bottle justice it really needs a good 30-60 minute decant so it and fully unwind from the silicate sarcophagus.
