2008 Packer - Viking Game (Minnesota): Similar notes to 6/2008, although more approachable immediately after opening. Still dark ruby with no signs of bricking. Could't get a good read on the nose with all the other cooking / candle aromas around the house. The palate has a nice flavor profile with a dose of cassis, but still leaves me wanting for more depth. Hint of green, but nothing offputting. With a fair amount of remaining acidity and tannins, this drinks much younger than a 15 year old Napa Cab. Improved significantly with time open, and was the #2 cab of the evening. As long as the fruit holds up, this has some years left. My last bottle.
A bright nose that really opens up with a little coaxing; hints of menthol and cedar. The same is true with the palate, which puts on some depth with time in the glass, but remains slightly hollow on the midpalate. Some remaining tannins on the finish. A couple of points better with a steak than on its own (91-92pts). Will try decanting my remaining bottle for an 45-60 minutes.
One of my oldest Newton Cab’s, it was time to finally drink this last bottle. No tasting notes recorded, but it was miles better than the 93 Merlot – the older Merlots have not been aging as well as the cabernets. Still, this wine has peaked and is on the decline.
