100% Tempranillo from 200 ha near the Duero River, in Pesquera del Duero just west of Vallodolid with southern exposure and sand/gravel over a limestone and clay subsoil at 800+ m. Manual harvest. Sorted on tables. De-stemmed. Traditional vinification with on-skin maceration followed by 2-3 week fermentation. Aged 18 months in American oak barrels, plus 6 months in bottle. 14.5% Abv.
Background: Founded by Alejandro Fernandez (1933-2021) and spouse Esperanza Rivera in 1972. It has grown to comprise four wineries in different regions. After the couple's separation, Esperanza and three daughters (Lucía, Olga, Mari Cruz) took over. (Eva, the youngest, remained with Alejandro as the Original Tinto Pesquera). The group, now branded as Familia Fernandez Rivera, is run by three of his grand daughters since 2019.

The nose features vanilla, coffee and tobacco mixed with ripe dark berry fruits. There’s a touch of heat on the nose, but you don’t get the 14.5% alcohol on the palate which is creamy and smooth but lacking some in acidity and fruit. Chalky tannins. I’ve liked this producer in the past. They’re classic Ribera. However, maybe the uneven vintage trumps some of their consistent quality.

npt extremely complex. but solidly made. Good candidate for an every day drinking wine (yet, if you drink wine every day, you may want more variety).
