New one for me, Nebbiolo's unruly parent! Reeks of wild morello cherries, dark red roses, tobacco, mushrooms and forest undergrowth. Plenty of fresh acid and structured, focused tannins (like fine Italian leather), rich, sharp cherries (soaked in lapsang souchong tea?), wild hedgerow blackberries and ripe wild strawberries. Double decanted 3 hours before drinking and still a bit 'edgy'. This is powerful stuff, 8 years old and so youthful - needs rich food to tame it! Went well duck confit, but not risotto milanese

After tasting the 2021 at the winery in Autumn, it’s so rewarding to open this bottle now. This is at an exciting spot - primary fruit of tart red plum and sour cherry hasn’t budged much, secondary notes of violet and black pepper are singing, and tertiary notes of wet woods and worn leather are starting to appear before a very long finish that includes campfire ashes and sharp menthol. This has Vajra’s airy/bright/lifted signature but shows a lot of gorgeous varietal character. Truly stellar.

Christmas lunch with the wine ark boys (Porcine, Oxford Street): Medium minus intensity aromas of red berries; raspberries, slight alcohol prickle lends a little slightly peppery spicy note, smells fresh and fleshy. And so it proves in the mouth, a touch tart, plenty of talc textured tannic grip, similar fruit profile but with dark berries joining on the finish with that alcohol prickle. Okay.

Drank somewhat on a whim to go with some really nice Italian sausages in a ragu sauce with pasta. Much darked than expected - looks like a barbera. Nose is bright and interesting, dark plum and cark cherry fruit, quite deep, but with a herbal, almost aniseed note. Very dry, firm tannins (not barbera) with a nice juiciness. Palate is loads of red fruit, plums, cranberry, redcurrant - almost bitter - which is why this wine works great with food, but is a little lean without. Really interesting contrast between the nose and palate. I like this, but it is a little polarizing.

Drank this bottle with a smashing Gonon “Les Iles” and it was equally as smashing. Possibly the best Freisa I’ve had. Top flight Nebbiolo like nose and tannins but such a beautiful young purple color which indicates the Freisa. Wonderful balance between its vertical structure and horizontal aromatics and fruit. Just a great bottle. Drink or hold.
