Lactic and savory, but also quite fresh and mineral. Aromas of raw beef, creme fraiche, vegetable oil, iris, lime juice and pith, honey, mushrooms, caramelized pears, quince preserves. The floral and earthy elements are intense; iris and fungal notes are exuberant and encompassing. Thick and rather soft for Savennieres; floral and spicy mid-palate; structure and freshness to spare, but this is definitely on the fat and plush side for dry Loire Chenin. Considering that this is Savennieres from a ripe vintage, its weight and density is no surprise, and it certainly shows the appellation's typical glittering stony character, so its overall character is not out of line. The mineral nature is baffling and predictable at once. How does a wine taste as mica appears?
I bought a case of this on release and I've got a few left. It took so long to budge. Rich and dense always, but it has finally turned a corner, showing more polish and integration today. Mature, but it may not be at its most interesting stage.... hard to say. Serve with strong cheese, assertive seafood, fungi, carpaccio/tartare, pork belly...
There was about a glass left and after 18 hours of air it is even better: brighter, fresher more delineated. I will be sure to give the next bottle a 6+ hour decant.

The first (screwcap) bottle that's showing a little age. Fantastic honeysuckle, wool. Matured, softening a bit. Really lovely. Based on this bottle, I'd drink this in the next couple of years.

Worth keeping these wines for a while, lots of complexity. Pale, nose of honeysuckle, pear, apple and lovely rich, smoky, honeyed palate and with some lemon freshness on the finish. Perfect with smoked salmon.
