  • 2nd time I have tasted this. First was quite a few years ago. I had one bottle in my cellar that was gifted to me by my dad. I loved it the first time and it seemed like a good wine to open for Christmas with my mom here visiting to honor my dad with one of his best old wines. This is a wine I've never seen anywhere else but his cellar so I think it is not one that a lot of people know which made it special.

Mid-neck fill. Cork removed with Durand but I got the central portion a bit out of line so two small fragments broke and stuck to the side of the bottle. I removed the larger one with the long arm of the Durand but a very small piece did come out early in the filter so I removed it and then decanted the entire bottle.

Beautiful crimson color, light weight appearance. Some sediment in the bottle, most of it stuck to the side of the bottle with slow decant. On initial check, right on decant, the wine had a lot of funkiness and even a bit of metallic overtone. This blew off in less than 30 min and the wine became a real joy to drink. Incredibly complex nose and flavor. Finish easily 30 sec and got longer the more time it spent in the decanter. Decanted at about 3:45PM and dinner started at about 5pm and the wine was ready to go. It probably would have gotten better with more time but it was so good, it was almost gone at the 2 hour mark. I did leave a tiny bit in the glass and tasted it a couple of times over the rest of the night and it was rock solid even 4 hours after decant. Paired with tenderloin of beef and au gratin potatoes which it was a perfect pairing for.

In an unusual comparison, my wife was really in the mood for Silver Oak so Coravin taste of the 2018 Napa silver oak and also a Coravin taste of the 2018 Rauzan-Segla in a "Very old bordeaux vs new world Cali Cab blend vs very young Margaux. Will post notes on the latter two as we finish them over the next days but all 3 wines were fabulous but so different. But with the Le Gay open, the other two were as good as one would expect but not in the same league.

    Awesome wine for Christmas.

  • A nice cigar nose. Very, very big palate. Lots of dark fruits, powerful wine. But it diminished a bit when I went back to it. #5 for me.

  • - Garnet color with slow forming legs. It's balanced and has flavours of dusty with a medium/full body. Satin-Like texture with a long finish - One of the best Bordeauxs I have had in a long time .Drank half one day and left the other half in the bottle which was even better having aerated overnight. Still tannic in the aftertaste. No rush to drink my other bottles.

  • Englishman Claret's note is spot on. A bit modern, unintegrated and four squared tonight.

  • 2 out of 3 bottles were excellent. This one is smooth yet complex. Great companion of bbq with spicy veggies. Leather, asphalt and some currant on a subdued nose. Elegant and still kicking for another 10-20 years. It changes significantly with the nuances of the food. Fantastic.
