  • This was double decanted about 9 hours ahead of time. Very expressive nose of ripe strawberry, pomegranate, spices, red meat, dry earth and some dark florals. A hint of alcohol on the nose as well. Full, "gourmand" palate. This is a little high octane: ripe fruit that brings a full mouthfeel, plenty of acidity, nice minerality that brings some much needed freshness. The finish is very long on sweet strawberry, dried figs and some salinity as well. But, the same alcohol I had on the nose peaks through on the finish. This is a big wine and there's plenty of structure to keep aging. Delicious, ripe, dark but the alcohol sticking out was a bit of a letdown. Still, wonderful and complex.

  • [Drank alongside the 2010 Chateau Rayas Chateauneuf du Pape]
Lighter than the ‘10 Rayas on the nose with persimmon jam, black plums and pluots, dried roses, and a touch of heat. This one was the spiciest on the palate all night, really showcasing the 100% Syrah here. Palate of black fruits, ripe and tart, fruit leather and plum skins, figs, black olives, spice cabinet, leather, and a slight heat on the long finish. This is starting to get near the peak in terms of tertiary development and complexity. Just a touch of heat that throws off the balance on an otherwise amazing wine. 92-93

  • Rayas / Pignan / Fonsalette / Tours Tasting (Scottsdale, Arizona USA): This was opened over 6 hour prior to serving, and it wasn't remotely enough time. What a beast, it's utterly massive. Like drinking a prodigious Nothern Rhone, but it's even more backward than '07 Chave! My first time with this wine, and it seems like this is one to start drinking at around 25 years of age.

  • Started a bit shy with heavy dark bramble fruit and green pepper. With time open this blows up into sweet cassis, animal, leather, mixed with the Reynaud strawberry. This is still young but with time open really explodes in the glass. The heat is felt a bit but the palate is a tidal wave that just keeps coming. A really interesting syrah expression. Finer than the Tours bottles drank recently and with a much higher intensity. Would recommend decanting.

  • Reynaud wine tasting, Pure Spirits (Gallina restaurant): This is the Syrah cuvee, a blend of 2 parcels, 14%, the bottle was opened and left uncorked for 24 hours

The wine shows very weird and different profile, dense, very dark fruit, super ripe, very spicy, whole spice, coffee beans everywhere, chocolate, burnt wood/smoke notes, very ripe black fruit, dense, licorice.
Palate showing the same profile, very alcoholic, angry tannins, med body, juicy black fruit, jam but not in the sweet way, med finish, coffee, smoke, burnt notes.
