Deep dark garnet in color with ever-so-slight clearing at the edges. Full, forward & fragrant nose of ripe fruit aromas of cherries, blackberries & plums with overtones of earthy/dusty notes & spice notes of black pepper, dried herbs, olives, some tar, minerals, smoky & a touch of cedar in the background. Full bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of dark cherries, blueberries & plums with earthiness, minerals, spices, herbs, cocoa & mushrooms. Long lingering finish. Drinks quite well with decanting & airing at 19 years of age but has the structured & fruit to continue with its development with additional aging if cellared properly.

Chris' Housewarming (Hamilton, ON): This pours just a hair darker than the 98 CdR. The nose is clearly more Syrah with loads of black olive, tar, dark soil, thyme, blackberry, blueberry, blood, oidine. The palate features a creamy mouthfeel, lots of plush dark fruit, but also the pickled olives and smoke. Beautiful.

Flowers, black olive, cured meat, chalk , campfire, blue fruit. Palate is so pure.....bright red and black fruit....spice, black olive, cured meat, creosote, campfire and spice. Finish is long.....wow. Awesome!

Tasted vis-a-vis the '97, this is more southern in style, richer, more creamy with less obvious syrah-character. It has a core of sweetness and lots of local garrigue and will keep for another five years easily.

Lack of signature character of Rayas that I like. Very dark and bordeaux style to me.
