  • - Garnet color with medium forming legs and aromas of coffee, dusty and green olive. It's balanced with a light/medium body. Smooth texture with a medium finish - Getting old but still very nice. Smooth. Green olives on the aroma.

  • I was a little worried looking at the drinkability window on cellartracker and on Parker, so I popped it. No need to worry. Wow. First impressions: wonderful rich dark cherry color. Lots of nose pouring this into the decanter. On the palate, this is silky smooth -- a great example of a nicely aged wine. To my complete amazement, it paired pefectly with the Brunet cheese -- an aged, stinky, oozing, goat's milk cheese from Italy. After a bite of stinky cheese, the wine seemed to resurrect the flavor, and carry it on for a full minute in the finish. A virtually perfect pairing. There is wonderful fruit here, and very mellowed tannins, all wrapped up in a silky finish. I am in love with the nose on old wines, and this wine has a wonderfully rich and fragrant nose. More later. Again, after some more time, the wine remains vibrant, fresh, and perfect with the Brunet. While there is a lot of sediment, there is almost no bricking, and the wine is in its perfect gentile age. There is a nice texture, some coffee, espresso, and silky cherry, and plum fruit. Drinking fine now -- probably has a few years left still before it fades away. A nice, rustic, big, flavor filled, and perfumed earthy wine from the Rhone. I was 26 in 1989 -- and way too young to have appreciated this nicely aged gem. My wife was 19 in 1989, and could not even legally have enjoyed it. It's often better to wait for things to mature and age. I can taste the rains of 1989 and elements of my own personal history. Later note -- as this continued to open up, out came the fruit -- its like being in a cherry orchard -- fresh fruit and a spring rain.

  • With Graeme, Toni, J, Al and Richard with a great meal - stunning food/wine combonation with grilled duck breast with a gratin of new potatoes and porcini mushrooms. Multi layered, raisins, smoke, game, etc. Very classy. It tasted superb and is really drinking well. Will it improve? (with food 93pnts!) See Geyserville 1990 and Cloudy Bay SB 1994.

  • At Frasier's with Bud, L, et al. Classic Northern Rhone smell and taste - med body, soft tannins, very farmyardy - more complex than the Jaboulet Thalabert 1989.
