  • Stubborn little bottle, tannins are still fairly angular. There still is some fruit and acid is high but I'm starting to doubt the near future of this bottle. I think this will need another five to ten years to soften up, maybe it's wiser to decant it for 4 to 6 hours. Unfortunately, this was my last one.
Pairing: Black truffle & artichoke pizza at S. Egidio

  • Tannins are a bit more mellow this time but this wine needs some serious time to open up. Give it at least an hour and it will blossom nicely.

  • This one might have gotten an assist from the more forward 1998 vintage - it was truly excellent on this night. Right from the time the cork was pulled, this had an effusive and inviting rich nose. The wine is quite full-bodied with excellent fruit ripeness still. Underneath that there is definitely some iron and meat. Good acids (midrange) help retain the shape of the wine. This was served blind at a Barolo dinner and I think some were surprised by just how good this bottle was in some esteemed company. Great now, but no harm in waiting another 10 years if you like.

  • Rosewood red in color. Nose is a bit muted at the beginning but opens up to classic Barolo in about 30 minutes. Notes of rose petals, wet cellar, iron and black tea. On the palate the acid is medium and keeps it lively. There is some red fruit but the tannins are outliving it, at least in this bottle. It is nonetheless enjoyable, subtle but assertive. Dry on the finish. Went well with Napolitan pizza.

  • Father's Day Dinner (Woodstock, GA): Color looks great, deep reddish crimson with only a little rust at rim, tons of sediment and wine seemed to get darker as the quantity diminished; nose is classic aged Barolo but so fresh at the same time, love the aged character of properly stored wine, still loads of fruit, high toned floral rose, pure red cherry, anise, sandalwood, and earth, no soy, celery seed, cardamom; on the palate this starts off very focused and stays that way until the back end where this really shows off the earth, iron rich soil of Terlo is awesome here, grainy and caressing tannin that envelops your mouth, nice ripe fruit, leather, balsamico, sweet wood, anise, depth, richness, and tons of character; really awesome!; still love Einaudi.
