  • Very disappointing, this was the 2nd Sassicaia of same vintage that was gone. Bought with a batch of wines from another collector and almost all have been fine, so it is unlikely to be a storage issue. For the price paid this is not worth it. I have never bought many before and will not be adding more unless I am sure it is good.

  • Like a couple of others here, I wanted to love this wine, for what it cost I deserved more than it delivered. Decanted for an hour, and drunk over 3, it remained hearbreakingly dull , well made, well balanced and solid, but lacking energy, vibrancy, complexity, An overvalued, overhyped ,highly coveted cab blend that , at least by this bottle, was crafted for the many Americans devoted to RP, and all things Italian. Im just guessing here, but Im sure this wine’s principal market over time has been USA, and maybe tourists in restaurants seeking the familiar and famous. I just dont get it, wish I did.

  • 1990 Bordeaux plus X (Restaurant Brunnenstube, Beinstein): Tasted blind. Decanted for several hours. Clear, deep tawny color. Very fruity and a bit broad nose with lots of plum and other dark fruit. Not as complex as the GPL.
On the palate very sweet, round and charming with lots of fine fruit and mellow tannin. Great extract, very dense and long. Joyful to drink, but lacks a bit excitement. 92-93

  • 48x 1990 (37x Bdx, 6x Napa, 5x others): From magnum. Others said that this a great Sassicaia. I didn’t had the same experience and thought this might be another overrated vintage of this Cuvee and also rather shallow and not interesting enough. Maybe proper aeration would have helped to bring out more. Don’t get me wrong, this was good, just without any hint of exceptionalism. 91 pts.

TN: Dark fruit, lots of minerality on the not so charming nose. On the palate this is better. Well-defined dark and red fruits, some crushed rocks, almost no tertiary aromas. Not much depth, medium precision. Light as most Sassicaias are with relatively fine tannins and probably a touch high on the acidity. But overall ok balance, missing a touch of creaminess to bring it all together. Medium length finish with a touch of sweet dark fruit.

Decanting: Quick double decant roughly 4 hours before the tasting. Maybe a proper decant, 4-5 hours would have been helpful to bring out more layers.

(Sassicaia) The Sassicaia was good but not headspinning. Still waiting for that Sassicaia that is gonna blow me away. Cherries and some dusty earth on the nose. Richer than the '94, '97 and '99 which are the others that I have had, with decent structure and piercing cherry fruit on the finish. But not much else there. Not too complex, avearge tannins. Just kind of boring. Still need to have the '85 and the '88. Maybe they will give the Sassicaia experience.
