4/7/24, 6:49 AM - I took it to a party on the 2nd night where it was as good or better & was consumed in no time. It was bottle 8 of 9. Looks like I will have to move on to the more recent vintages soon. Just fantastic!
3/24/24, 4:11 AM - It was a great weekend with the wines only surpassed by the better company!
2/12/24, 3:54 AM - Great to hear from you. I hope you are both well (as are we)! My son had a blast at the Rolex (they were the Ferrari clowns)
1/28/24, 3:32 AM - 05 controversy? Every tiime I pour an 05 for my French snob friends, they love it. Most notably, recently the worst of the snobs picked the 05 LB I poured WOTN against tough competition!
1/28/24, 5:55 AM - All the 05s I have had have been outstanding, but to my preference, they are just entering what should be a long plateau. These include: Ducru-Beaucaillou, Leoville Poyferre, Lynch-Bages, Pape Clement & Pichon Baron. All our local Bordeaux geeks have loved them all
1/28/24, 6:08 AM - Still haven't tried my Pontet Canet, Cos d'Estournel & of course, Montrose, which likely end up being the best (if I live long enough...)
1/14/24, 2:35 AM - Your note sounds better than an 82...
1/12/24, 1:51 AM - In my experience, that wine really sings after a 2.5 hour double decant. Give it a try! Joel
1/9/24, 4:18 AM - Great investigative work Mark!! I picked up other vintages of this for us to try (07 & 12) Joel
1/6/24, 6:04 AM - The competition included the 95 LLC, 07 Opus One & 07 Herb Lamb & all agreed the 05 LB was WOTN. This wine has entered its prime drinking for me & should last years.
11/11/23, 7:32 AM - In my experience, their roses need some time to fully come together & strut their stuff. I haven't tried mine yet
11/11/23, 7:30 AM - You guys need some patience (it comes with age....) I won't touch my 19s for several years. Drinking an 07 Poetry tonight
11/7/23, 7:05 AM - Flawed?? Score?
11/3/23, 2:16 PM - Spot on Mark! That wine is unbelievably good, but I agree that the metal cap on the cork is STUPID!
11/4/23, 3:57 AM - Hi guys. No Mark, neither of the 2 bottles I have opened had cork issues once I got past the metal helmet on top, & came out easily with my Ah-so. I reserve the Durand for wines of at least 25 years of age. I only use a corkscrew with wine that have DIAM corks which are so tight that I have broken an Ah-so on one. JCL, I too, over decades of dinking/collecting, have had my tastes evolve several times. Originally, a very devoted Francophile, I now love the CA cabs & Bordeaux blends. I believe that actions speak louder than words & many of the top French winemakers have bought (or looking to) wineries in CA. (eg. Chritian Moueix, Aubert de Villaine, LVMH, etc.). Further, winemaking has improved & the climate has changed. When tasted blind, most recent top Bordeaux reds that I have opened have been guessed as CA! I am less dogmatic/snobbish than I used to be & enjoy both.
10/30/23, 5:27 AM - Agreed. Checking my notes, 2.5 hrs for me in 2021, then better on day 2.
10/10/23, 5:17 AM - Bummer Mark, I'm holding 3. IMHO, the 16s are also big & will need more time. I have only dabbled in them so far. Take care pal, see you soon (& come thirsty!)
9/27/23, 4:26 AM - Drinking beautifully, but just entering its peak drinking, for my taste. In a mag, you definitely have time. BTW, the 05 is at least as good!
9/28/23, 9:08 AM - 05 is my fave vintage & have loved Araujo, Colgins (made by Aubert!), Sloan, Levy & McClellan, Shafer HS, Spottswoode & prob others. 05 Bordeaux are as good (if not better...)
9/10/23, 3:15 AM - FYI: no cab in it - 96/4 Merlot/Cab Franc
9/10/23, 3:10 AM - Mark, as we discussed, age is now limiting my new purchases of cabs & painfully, I passed on my 21 Bards & Tempest. They are both still a bargain at the release prices (great QPR IMHO).
8/31/23, 9:28 AM - May be too late for me; already have had 7 of my 9 bottlles....
9/2/23, 8:34 AM - All true, but I already have too much wine & I'm no longer young, like you. I do have more VHR in many vintages than any other red, I believe
9/2/23, 12:33 PM - We also have the champagne bug & just spent a fabulous week there
8/22/23, 7:18 AM - Michael if you need help, I can probably get you some. Let me know Joel
8/22/23, 9:09 AM - Yes, I had one of the best tastings that I have ever had in Napa there last summer. I just got off the phone with Angela & recommended you to her (did not know that you were on the list). We tasted all 3 wines & I loved them all. Of the cabs, I thought the Englehard was the most approachable, but the Las Posadas had the better potential (big!). I bought all 3
8/22/23, 9:14 AM - I see our tastes are similar.
8/24/23, 9:33 AM - Smart move; you won't regret it. If it's any consolation, I just spent $350/bottle on some chardonnay (The Judge)!
8/26/23, 7:29 AM - I feel your pain Jeff; turning 70 in another month. The 19s are the absolute last cab vintage I will buy!
7/19/23, 9:56 PM - Any decant? Did you like it?
7/21/23, 4:35 AM - Thanks, appreciated!
7/6/23, 1:34 AM - Although I found it a little less opulent than prior bottles, IMHO it was WOTN among many at a party. It's probablybeginning development of tertiary characteristics. Great wine, enjoy! Joel
6/23/23, 7:06 AM - Enjoy the mountains Michael & love the new picture Mark!!
6/18/23, 7:32 AM - The worst thing was that I suspected there was a problem & I still brought it to the brownbag tasting - embarassing!
6/8/23, 5:30 AM - Unfortunately, I did not take note of the disgorgement date. Fortunately I have more bottles from this purchase at home & will check Sat, upon return from Destin. Separately, I've been trying to find the time to drop you more notes from the recent Napa trip & will likely email you later today
6/8/23, 2:33 PM - I still did have the bottle & the disgorgement date was July 2022.
5/30/23, 11:54 AM - Nope, fully integrated
5/21/23, 7:39 AM - Good morning Michael. We started our Howell Mtn day at Cimarossa (another lovely place), where the wines were good; my preference being the 19 Riva di Ponente. Impensata followed, then finally a lovely benefit at Neal Family, where we got to taste some wines from Mark's cellar; highlights being the 02 Heitz Martha's & 96 Insignia.Today & tomorrow, we are going to several small wineries that I have never heard of. My friend knows the owners/winemakers & wants me to meet them. I will let you know of any highlights. Joel
5/19/23, 1:44 AM - Mark, I also picked up a couple - love grenache!
5/12/23, 4:19 AM - 79? Doesn't fit with your note
5/9/23, 10:15 AM - Your note is similar to mine from a year ago; looks like nothing has changed (yet)
5/9/23, 4:03 PM - I'm a newbie when it comes to chenin, but I enjoyed the 18 CdB Sec. Hopefully, the 19 will be at least as good. It really seemed to be that more time was needed. Cheers!
5/6/23, 1:20 PM - Sounds great Michael! Did you decant it & if so, for how long? I haven't tried a 14 yet. Cheers Joel
4/18/23, 2:29 PM - I believe that the critics undercalled the 04 Napa cabs (as they did the 09s). Every one that I have had from Araujo, Abreu, Colgin & even Insignia have been great & just entering their peak windows. It makes for better pricing at auction, though! (this is the 4th time I have bought the 04 Araujo, mean price $190)
4/18/23, 2:33 PM - Been at it for 30 years; it's very addictive... (& great sport!)
4/19/23, 9:11 AM - at different times & depending on many factors: HDH, Zachy's, Acker, Spectrum, WineBid. If you are really interested, I will give you more details when I have time
4/5/23, 2:23 AM - Thanks for the early take on this one; I always appreciate your notes Mark! Pesenti has always been my fave, but I haven't finished my 19s yet. Sounds like it's time to pop a 21!
3/31/23, 5:11 AM - From recollection: 01 Sassicaia, 13 Schrader LPV, 03 Pichon Lalande & at least 10 more reds & whites (14 of our regular brownbag group in Ft. Lauderdale at a good Italian restaurant). I also brought a 15 Paul Hobbs Agustina chard & an 08 Bussola recioto
4/2/23, 8:06 AM - The brown bag (BB) group at Wine Watch in Ft. Lauderdale has been going on every Sat. afternoon for 30 years. I probably have made it there twice a month for the last 15. I have learned a ton & have met some of my dearest friends there. Hopefully we will get to meet one of these days. Joel
4/4/23, 1:53 PM - Usually 12-20, but sometimes as few as 7-8 & rarely as many as 30. The rules are simple: each attendee must bring a bottle of something to pour for everyone. Some bring both a white & a red & many (but not all) bring really fine wines. It is both fun & educational. Some of us then go out for dinner to drink....
3/23/23, 5:29 AM - About time; I'm already half way thru a case! Cheers Joel
3/9/23, 5:40 PM - You needed that 2nd day to get to 94 (I did). Good to hear from you
2/26/23, 4:06 AM - 87? Seems from your note that you liked it more than that
1/23/23, 5:34 AM - Your score seems low for your note
1/12/23, 5:59 AM - This is from another auction purchase. It's great (had to buy more!) & just a hair behind the 05
12/20/22, 5:21 AM - I shared it with 2 experienced friends & blind, they guessed CA. It didn't last long! I too have 1 left, but it will probably go in the next year (just too good). Happy holidays to you & Carol & hopefully, we wil see you soon!
11/14/22, 9:15 AM - Glad to hear that you agree with me. This wine is hard to beat! Just picked up more at auction, with the 04. Enjoy, Joel
11/10/22, 3:33 PM - Haven't tasted mine yet. It has always been my impression to drink the Pesentis 1st (my 2 faves)
11/5/22, 1:39 PM - I assume that it will improve with more age, but who knows for sure. I have already had 6 of 9 bottles, but it is the oldest of 8 different VHRs that I have (including the Extended), so I keep enjoying them from time to time. Related, I love the CA 12 cabs!
10/29/22, 3:48 AM - Any comments on it?
10/22/22, 3:41 AM - Always a great wine that NEVER lasts!
10/2/22, 3:05 PM - Thanks Michael, we are fine. The storm missed southeast FL; we just had a lot of rain. I'm planning on visiting Mark1npt in Naples next month & he is fine but my hotel is closed until 10/31. Hopefully it will open in time (11/4).The Abreu (just picked up 3 more bottles at auction) easily outshone the 15 Greer & 13 Darioush II, but I really liked the Greer. Joel
10/2/22, 5:36 PM - Hard to say gym, probably another couple of years &/or a 3 hour decant. Out of my league as I rarely drink mags. Regardless, you will love it!
10/4/22, 5:09 AM - Yes, he is well & he believes that we should be a go for next month & we still are planning to visit. Now, which wines should I stand up???
9/14/22, 5:51 AM - Sounds like 1 bottle I had with significant VA
9/4/22, 4:37 AM - Hi Mark. I'm now down to just 1. I have been impressed by how some of the 16s are starting to drink, but my preference is to hold for a few more years. My daughter likes younger cabs & that is why I brought & opened this one. OTOH, my son likes them more aged, so I will pour the 07 Blankiet Prop at Le Dip in DC tomorrow. Enjoy the rest of the weekend Joel
8/21/22, 1:29 PM - Great bottle as was the 1st I had a year ago (bought at auction). Mark was telling me that you guys drank some good ones in Houston. Hopefully, I will get a chance to meet & join you some time.
7/4/22, 10:30 AM - Nice notes above, but I will add that the bottle Bruce poured for us a few weeks ago was outstanding (I couldn't put my glass down!) Not sure how he had prepared it, but we loved it & got to finish the bottle over dinner at Solbar. If you have a few, give one a try with along decant. (mine are also waiting to ship, but I will be all in for the ER when offered) Happy 4th!! Joel
7/5/22, 6:21 AM - Just speculating as he has no ER (18 or 19) available to taste that day.
7/5/22, 2:32 AM - Flawed? It doesn't sound like it from your note.
Thanks for letting us know about this problem. We will review your comments and be in touch soon with an update.
