PUTELJEN! nailed it. Closed for about one hour after decanting, then opening to dusty roses, a touch of bark, and cherries behind that. Some mint on the lengthy finish. Could use more time, but nice now.

Initially a bit closed and hard. With time more fruit and some VA. Quite elegant and polished with roses, cardamom, cloves and pine. On the palate cherries and sloan. Good structure and quite a lot of tannins. Good lenght. Very nice but needs more time.

Pnp initially very polished nose, varietal, a lot of power on the palate, quite powerful wine, then with time 1-2h it gets softer and more elegant, nose becomes floral, quite pretty. I would think it needs 10y to get to peak, moving very slow (the winemaking if you ask me), if it was for me I probably would have gone half the so2 and no filtering to allow the wine to have more character, but a good wine overall. 2nd day nose of pure liquorice, spice and leather on the palate, it gained lightness and balance, would drink for the next 20years, if now give it 2h decant

This has been sitting in my cellar for 5 years, and I could wait no longer! High expectations for a wine labeled as "hilltop of violets," and I was pleased to see that it delivers! Decanted for 1-3h, agree that the air time was needed for the barolo to show its best. Dark garnet in the glass, expansive floral nose (violets!), along with cedar and vanilla. On the palate, round red fruit, plums and cherries, cheeky tannins, more cedar, tar, spice, and a long smooth finish. Definitely worth the wait! This has plenty of life, still approaching the CT drinking window but seems ready to enjoy now, with decanting. Tonight paired with grilled rack of lamb. 93/94

This took about two hours to open up. Beautiful nose of cherry, rose petal, and violets - they are there if you look for them. On the palate, black cherry, plum, and notes of rose petal, violet, tar, and earthy spice, with strong tannins and strong acidity on the long finish. This is excellent, with room to improve. It was an excellent value at about $70. The Cellartracker drinking window looks about right - decant it for a few hours if you want to drink it now.

Barolo Dinner (Mathilde Bistro - SF): Great to see the kinship of the 08/12/13. The 13 is the most backward of the bunch, brimming full of potential but feels slightly punishing to me right now. More weight than the other two, but still in a more elegant red-fruited vein than the Ravera. Others said this was starting to open up a bit towards the end of the night, I unfortunately didn't have a chance to revisit. 90 for enjoyment at the beginning of the night, but 94-96 in another decade, I think.

Barolo Dinner (Mathilde, San Francisco): Stood up for weeks, decanted off a small amount of fine sediment. Light ruby, slight age-appropriate bricking; high intensity aromatics, red cherry, floral, roses; palate is medium bodied, red fruited, high but approachable tannin, medium alcohol (14%); medium-long finish. Youthful, approachable, but this has so much further to go in the next 2 decades. Hard to judge now, but 94++? Definitely has the elegant/red fruited Bricco character which is hard to find elsewhere. 6 hours later: fabulous nose and palate, approachable, but tighter than the 2008 and 2012. This will be great one day.

A beauty! Deep nebbiolo nose with cherries, violets, licorice and seeet leather. Earthy, rich palate with still pretty young tannin balanced by lovely fruit. Several layers gives this a fantastic body that lasts for a good 30 sec.

Hour decant than drank over another 90 minutes. Lovely nose of red fruits, spices, roses and tar. Pallet of minerals, tar, cinnamon plums and cherry, perhaps a touch of leather. Great mouthfeel with smooth well integrated tannins. Long finish. Really nice barolo that is already drinking very well. Would buy again. 95+

It is still a wine of potential. Dense and intense, with a core of red fruits. It is earthy, has some spice and firm structure. Minerally acidity carries the finish. It is good, but miles off its apogee and has not anywhere near the pleasure you get from the ’12 at this juncture.

Pnp over 2 hours. Did not take enough notes. Fantastic showing from the Vajra '13 BDV. Would love to compare this side by side with the '16 BDV since I think the '16 vintage might be notch better based on my experience so far. This didn't have as much of the floral, bright aromas I would expect from Vajra. Nevertheless, this had a large amount of complexity on the palate with a medium finish. Looking forward to trying another in a few years!
open 30 min, decanted one hour, in the glass for 2.5 more. dark cranberry skin red; aromatically reticent on the outset, with air, shows ripe red sour cherry, balsam, caramelized brown sugar dark plum compote, mint - expands notably; persistent, pure & intense attack, the fruit is ripe, black-ish & concentrated; while the acids aren't prominent, the underlying tannic structure emphasizes them.
even with the concentrated fruit, seems to be mostly a savory style - vintage inflected; consider your food accompaniment. first from the case, you can drink them, but this will be choice in 4 - 5 more years & beyond.
black peppered boneless pork loin chop; creamed white corn, this morning's summer flower chanterelles, rosemary, smoked apple bacon vinaigrette

The '13 BdV drank beautifully immediately after opening, showing more open than I recall it being the last time I tasted it (2020). This was at a restaurant, so a bit of a briefer impression, but my take was the wine seemed at its best immediately after opening and became a touch less expressive a few hours later (which I find typical for young Barolo).
The nose was beautifully perfumed, with a burst of fresh red roses, very sweet red and purple fruit tones, anise, and blood orange peel. On the palate, the wine was dense, full-bodied for a Nebbiolo, with incredibly sweet dark red plum, dark red cherry, and purple fruit tones, licorice, and red florals. Texturally, the wine is concentrated and dense, with medium to high, but high quality tannin that will benefit from further integration.
This continues to show all signs of being a phenomenal wine in the making. It's no crime to drink one now but clearly the best days are 5-10 years or more ahead.

Tight and unyielding on pnp and an hour in the glass. While the pedigree here seems strong, seems less exciting than the 2016 (although admittedly this is speculation given how tight this is).
Fortfarande ung med ganska tjuriga taniner. Såg att i min senaste note skrev jag att de här flaskorna borde ligga 5 år till och det står jag fast vid. Kommer bli ett fanatiskt vin

Jeroboam Club Tasting: Barolo 2013 (The Pump House, Bristol): Red-ruby. Lovely fragrance and immediacy on the nose. Very fresh, very pure, very complex, making it difficult to make out specific elements, beyond a delicate spice, menthol and tar. Great delicacy and poise on the palate, weightless, unforced, lovely. A beautiful wine in its early maturity.
Opened 90 minutes prior to dinner & finding it completely open, aromatic & elegant decided to simply slow ox in my self designated (slightly larger than a Riedel Vinum ) Burg glass shape which worked perfectly for pre dinner sips & the rest of the way. This is another Vajra BdV masterpiece in the making and already outstanding in every way in its relative youth 8yrs out. Its a dam good thing I bought 8 & still have 5 left after tonight! Tempted to hunt down more.
Semi translucent deep ruby red. Inviting & delightful signature Barolo aromas of its namesake violets plus roses, dark berries & underbrush. What a nose! Sips are a plethora of sensuous raspberry, mineral, eucalyptus, forest floor, herbs & tobacco leaf. Incredibly elegant, silky, finessed & weightlessly fresh. Vajra is organic certified. The fruit is ultra pure & radiant. This is a wine to drink now and have plenty for the cellar. Delighted to have 5 more. Think I'll drink one every 3 yrs through 2035. 14% alc went completely unnoticed.
Wow, another great Bricco Delle Viole. The bouquet starts with a whiff of bourbon vanilla, then black cherries and rose pedals take over, with time almonds and white pepper join the flavor profile. The palate of this full bodied wine is plastered with powerful but refined tannins. Still quite young, I would give it at least 5 more years and than enjoy it over the next 2 decades.

Bricco delle Viole 2013: a little tight at the moment, but still fascinating, with notes of dark red cherries, some tar, violets, also some minerality. It's medium-full bodied, with pretty high tannin that is still a little rough and nicely high acidity. Long finish. This might still need a few more years but very good potential. (95+)

The '13 BdV continues to be a gorgeous wine, even if it's showing only a fraction of its potential today. On the nose, I found dark red cherry fruit, plum, violets, lavender, exotic spices, and minerality. The nose is cool in tone and the profile of the fruit suggests an almost hard-candy like sweetness, On the palate, the wine was less giving at this stage, but showed a beautiful inner sweetness and great finesse in the tannins, with a texture packing a high concentration of fruit into a mid-weight, elegant package. A wave of sweet dark red fruit and violet tones flowed across the palate, culminating in a finish that was long with exotic spices & saline minerality.
While I found the '13 Vajra BdV is more shut down than it was a year ago or on release, the quality of the wine is clear. It's an incredibly beautiful wine, and not only one of the best QPRs of the 2013 vintage, but one of the top wines at any price.
I tasted the '16 BdV last week. I think it's hard to declare a winner, and they're both incredible wines. I think the '16 BdV is a bit more explosive and concentrated than the '13, while the '13 is a touch more finessed. They are both elegant wines in an absolute sense, and both possess striking levels of sweetness both in the aromatics and on the palate. Both have shown abnormal complexity at an early age - the '16 is a bit more expressive and obvious today, but so was the '13 at the same age.
Far more closed than the 2013's than I have been tasting recently. The little I see tells me this is likely to be a light on the palate, very intense, elegant Barolo; a profile that never existed in pre modern style Barolo.

Just a taste and then letting it breath. And it's pretty good directly. Let's see what a couple of hours does.
4 hours: It's good. It's quality. Undoubtedly. But doesn't reach the high altitude. At first. But it grows during the evening. Flowers and cherries. Well balanced. Last glass is the best. 91-93. Could possibly get better.

A Bricco delle Viole Vertical with Giuseppe Vaira (Fausto, Brooklyn, NY): [Double decanted at 12:30pm.] Beautiful floral nose. Loads of violets and elegant fruit in the mouth. Continues to open. A gorgeous, complex wine to drink over the next 20 or more years, though it will need a good decant until 2030 or so.

I came in with low expectations, expecting the wine to be closed off at this stage, but instead I was very impressed. This is clearly a remarkable wine and going to be very fun to follow over time. Immediately upon PnP, sweet red fruit and floral aromas burst out of the bottle. In the glass, the nose was at times restrained and at times highly expressive, but when it was showing its cards, it was outrageously beautiful and took over the senses. The palate remains tight with gripping, but elegant tannins, reminding the taster that this is a young Barolo in need of many years in the cellar to be at its best. What a wine. This is obviously in need of many years, ideally, but I will find it hard to resist opening another bottle to enjoy this state of youthful exuberance.
Opened in the bottle for 5 hours or so. Just awesome and exploding with juicy strawberry and mixed red berry. Leather, truffle, soil, and granite compliment. Incredibly clean and precise almost bordering on austere. Tongue drying tannin and acid rip hard. As stated before this needs 10 years but really energetic and excellent now.

A small peek into 2013 Barolos (Osteria Langhe): Nose: The nose is intensely perfumed and filled with wild flowers, violets, strawberries, red cherries, raspberries, red berries, leather, licorice, truffles, and some saline notes.
Taste: Medium bodied with high acidity and high tannins. The feel is regal and refined, filled with violets, wild flowers, red berries, red fruits, saline, red cherries, strawberries, and some bits of herbs.
Overall: This is just delightful. It is immensely youthful, but filled with class, elegance, and depth. This is a tour de force wine that has the ability to turn into something very special with time.

Enjoyed at restaurant. Splash decanted. This needed 2hrs+ to open up. Concentrated with plenty of fruit, but acidity and tannin really cover up the fruits. Developed a muted nose after a few hours. Seems well built but not as enjoyable as the ‘11 or ‘12 for drinking now. Best to hold.

Decanted for 1 hour and remained austere with mouth drying tannins. Still well enough made to be enjoyable young (more so with food). Palate is red fruit centric with leather, truffle, and earth tones in the background. Clean and precise just needing more time to fatten up. Give it 5 or 10 more years.
Cappellano, Lynch Bages & Friends (Formentos - Chicago, IL): Decanted briefly a couple of hours before dinner. A bit muted on the nose, but if you look hard there is pretty red fruit and florals. The palate is more expressive, super delicious and pretty. Rich fruit that is lighter and traditionally styled. Gritty tannin that declares the wine's youth. Elegant, with so much damn potential.

Cappellano and Lynch (Chicago, IL): I wasn't a huge fan of the 2012 version of this wine, but this 2013 is pretty damn nice. The nose was a little muted here, as if you were experiencing it through something else, but what I could pick out was absolutely lovely -- beautifully sweet cherries, a hint of florals, and a gentle amount of earth. The palate is awfully young and the chalky tannins are a bit much to work through, but the ripeness of the fruit shows here, and works beautifully with the restrained winemaking style here. Very much to my taste.
Not going to give this a number as it is so very young. Not my decision to pull this cork, but I wouldn't touch this wine for 10 years at least. Bright and fruity at this stage, lots of tannin.

Really spectacular - From the first smell you know this is a world-class wine, up in the echelon of the Mascarellos, Sandrone, Giacosa, Grasso, and Chiara Boschis (my "other" favorite producer). Tons of rich red fruit, roses, tar, spices, other flowers and a touch of menthol. Rich, silky mouthfeel, and this almost reminds me of Maria Teresa Mascarellos wines. Long finish and so much richness shrouding the tannins that this will age for decades, easily. <$70 this is a steal and should be bought by the case.

Small pour at Sunfish tasting caused me to buy 2 more tonight. This is stunning Barolo even at this youthful stage! So amazingly pure, deep, intense and complex. No problem being long on this vintage with 6 btls now :).
Poured into decanter and aired for 2 hours before drinking. Sunday afternoon at Straits UE. Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of floral roses and violets, sweet spices, sweet red cherries, ripe strawberries, sour red cherries, red licorice, minty balsamic, slight leather with more air. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14%), soft high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of sweet red cherries, ripe strawberries, redcurrant, stony earth minerality, fresh leather. Long finish. Very good quality. Complex and brimming with potential. Fruit so fresh and primary at the moment. Should start singing lovely in 5+ years' time.

Tasted after 2013 Barolo Albe. Quite a step up in terms of complexity, but also much more backward in comparison. Powerful, grippy tannins, really tight and brooding with lots of depth and fabulous length. This needs time but is already very promising. 93-94+(+?)

Decanted 2-1/2 hours prior to dinner and actually another hour or so wouldn't hurt as this was at its very best 4 hours in. Drank in Burg glasses as always. Served around 55-60 degrees. Medium translucent ruby color. No bricking. Roses and berries on the nose. What's striking about this wine is its lurking and only partially revealed complexity. Already you sense how special this wine is based on a restrained range of flavors you already pickup. Raspberries, cherries, licorice, mineral and other unidentifiable traces of things to come are there. The balance, purity and finesse here are amazing! Thankfully, for whatever reason, Vajra has escaped the recognition it deserves for delivering Grand Cru level Barolo. If, I ever get to Piedmont, Vajra will be at the top of my list to visit. Vajra is year in year out spectacular and even more special in a vintage like 2013. If you only have 3 or less of these you may want to hold off opening. I bought 5 in order to risk opening one early. I love the wine right now but others may find the structure a little youthfully tough. With a 3 hour decant though its pretty tame and open for business. Easily 93pts tonight already and perfection in the making. If you're a value hunter like me there are fewer better values in top notch traditionally styled red wines. Paid $67 drinks like $125 plus. Maybe I should grab 2 more!

Tasted at the winery, and the wine was opened approximately 2 minutes before tasting. This wine is loaded with tannins right now, but it was very good (given the minimal air it received). Im planning to cellar the one I bought for 20 years. This thing has the structure to go the distance.

Big and young. The 2013s are going to be awesome. This shows tons of fruit next to herbs, mushrooms, clay and roses. Lots of tannin, intense acid, thick texture, spicy and floral finish. I would give it 10 before revisiting

Shy on opening. After 2 hours: red fruits, rose and spices the dominant notes, swirl and subtle hints of capsicum and cinnamon hop out as well. Medium to full bodied, cherry and raspberry fruits, bold and chalky tannins on the midpalate, a minerally (almost metallic) almond tang stretches out with prodigious and alarming length. Dense fruit; austere. Try the next one in 10 years. Would recommend others to save their bottles for now - tasting at this point in time is largely an academic exercise.

At the winery. Very fine Nebbiolo sweetness, rose, red fruit, cheerries and violets. Lovely fruit core right now hidden behind the fine ripe but noticeable tannin. This was recently bottled (?) so it still feels a bit raw. It has a superb balance and elegance of the highest breed. I have only tasted the 2010 before and this is almost as good if not equal. Will need at least 10-15 years to properly come around but should definitely be worth the wait. An underrated wine. 94-95p

Floral with violets more. Dark fruited with dark cherry. This has excellent ripeness, with sappiness to the fruit, nettles, tar, and a cooler sense to the wine with density and structure but phenolic ripeness and texture to carry it. I tend to underestimate this wine in its youth, and I suspect i am doing it this time as well.

Perhaps the finest wine I've encountered from this producer; which is saying a lot. Superb balance, focus, purity. A wine that needs no adjectives, just your love and, naturally, several more years. Drink 2024-2042. highly recommended
The nose showed incredible depth with exotic floral tones, saline minerals, a bit of marine flora, plum, dusty spice and rosy florals. On the palate, I found mineral-laden cherry, cranberry, inner floral tones, exotic spice, and exquisitely fine tannin. The finish was long, long, long with masses of inner floral tones and dried berries. This wine has a long life ahead of it, and I can’t wait to see where it’s going.

Briccin outstanding. yet, so much room to improve with more age. Drink now and love it. Hold and cherish it. Actually paired with fresh strawberry dessert. fresh cherry pits and licorice took a backseat. the strawberry notes complimented the fruits. Awesome.

The finish was long, long, long with masses of inner floral tones and dried berries. This wine has a long life ahead of it, and I can’t wait to see where it’s going.
