  • Mushroom on the nose. Soft now but with huge depth and complexity. Dry and a little thin on the finish, indicating this would have been better 10 years ago. There are underbrush, raspberry, pepper and olive tapenade on the palate. Long and complex, drink up.

  • It has been far too long since I last tasted this gem. The good news, it is still a beautiful wine loaded with menthol, mint-leaf, cherries, tobacco, bright, red plums and smoke. The mid-palate is medium-bodied, smoky, fresh, and spicy with a salty edge to the red berries in the finish. No decanting is needed here, this is fully developed. Drink from 2024-2030.

  • Right out of the bottle this was definitely pretty dirty, but not flawed in any obvious way… so I gave it an hour in the decanter to see if it cleaned up. It did! This was still just a mediocre bottle, but by the end it was drinking like a proper old Chave! Silky, elegant and meaty with pretty red fruit, dried strawberries and spice. Not worth what I paid for it, but fun to try! I’ve had very mixed results with 78’-88’ Chave, when they’re good they’re amazing, but bottles with unknown provenance (like this one!) you are rolling the dice for sure.

  • Clean purple fruit, smoke, meat, woody, spicy, in great condition and so lifted. 94

  • Boxing Day wines at Domaine: A sensational bottle. Decanted for ~60 minutes before we tasted. Towering, penetrating aromatics of dried black fruit, smoked meat, old leather, tapenade and ground black peppercorns. The palate has terrific concentration and freshness, with all kinds of layers and complexity. Continued at this level for an hour+. Wow.
