  • Good cork, even after 30 years. The Durand Corksrew i used for sagety was not needed (but better safe then sorry)

It was alreafy quite brown around the edges coulorwise and already looked like a proper wine with age, yet i was surprised, how much breathing the wine actually needed to get to its best.

It was decanted in a small caraffe (to get rid of the sediment) and was at its best after 1h after being quite reductive in the beginning.

Still a lot to like, surprisingly there was still some fruit left, acitiy and structure was at a good point, and there were a lot of nice tertiary notes.

Overall still a very nice brunello, even at a state of gentle decline.

  • This is the 3rd bottle I have had of this wine over the past 4 years, but I apparently never made a note before. It was an auction accident where I had written the wrong number on my proxy form, but ended up being an inexpensive and lucky accident. I was worried I may have kept this bottle too long. On the night I opened it, I decanted for a couple of hours. It was very pleasant, had the chocolate covered cherries on the palate that I remembered. But there was a tartness that was distracting to the overall pleasure, even with food. I had saved a glass in a 4 oz bottle but forgot to drink until day 3. What a difference! The sourness was gone and it was drinking so smoothly—still the cherries but also an exotic spiced tea. I learn this lesson again and again with Sangiovese—that it really needs time—but it is hard to trust that SO much time will make a difference. This was 89 on the first night and 93+ on the 3rd.
