  • 1972 Bordeaux horizontal tasting: Have had the 72 Latour once or twice before and thought it was head and shoulders above the other First Growth in 72. But not today as the Lafite was showing better tonight. Good concentration but muted aromatics and not particularly interesting nor fun to drink. Could be bottle variation or perhaps simply getting a little long in the tooth

  • Not good. It was too old. Too bad. With Gg, Alain, Francoise, Edward.

Magnifico

  • In Magnum. Opened 2 hours before service. Note of herbal, floral. Strength comes out after another 1 hour in the glass. Fully integrated tannins, some complexity and medium finish. Surprisingly, the muscular structure gradually formed after 2 hours (in the glass). Finishing becomes long. Amazing wine. I am sure the wine could last for at least another 5-10 years.

  • 72 is one of those vintages one would not touch if it was not for a birthday. Being my first 72 this turned out to be quite an eye opener though. Fill high shoulder. Upon removing of the capsule, a dark brown hard crust on the cork became visible and the cork sank down immediately a bit. Obviously only held in place by sticking to the capsule and I found it quite amazing it could still seal the bottle. Only touching the cork was sufficient to make it fall entirely into the bottle. The first pour however revealed a beautiful garnet, about what you would expect from a Grand Cru Classe from the early 90s with a still fairly dark color in the middle and only slight browning towards the translucent rim. A pretty nose with plenty of sous bois and mushroom, still some fruit, and even fine tannins with about 1h of air. Only here and there some vegeteable tastes coming through. Medium finish.
Until today I thought CT scores in the 90s for vintages like 72 or 73 were more sentimental/nostalgia than about what really was inside but this is an amazing effort matching many high quality 75s. Might need to revisit my earlier decision of not buying any top Bordeaux when our son was born in 07. Will certainly still be a much better wine than this at age 20/30/40/50
