Served blind. Double decanted in the AM by the person who brought it, who said it was much thinner and inwardly turned upon opening.
Incredibly perfumed, it has a contrasting nose of classical precision yet is almost flamboyant in its extroversion with cherry more than dark strawberry, some cedar, and roses for miles. On the palate, it is expansive with a sense of gravitas, yet remains focused with terrific depth and a sense of inner calm. This is the iron fist in a velvet glove. It's broad with terrific sap, beautiful fruit, spice and florals. Very long on the back end. Guesses were all over the place, with a short detour of Tuscany that was quickly dismissed. With the incredible perfume and its texture, I ended finally making my guess of Cannubi dominant Barolo from a terrific traditional producer in a warm but not hot year. In a hundred years I would not have guessed Biondi Santi. Fantastic, and when unveiled a revelation. Going back with the label known, I could parse where I went astray, but I bet if you poured me this again in 5 years (or five days) I'd most likely go back to my guess. Drinking at peak with tons of time in hand. A truly stunning bottle and bigger surprise. Wow.
