Celebrating Tooch's move to Chicago (Browntrout, Chicago IL): nose: I didn't think the wine was heat damaged, but the tones of dark red fruits, dark red cherries, cassis and liqueur tones were fairly muted and lacking some depth. Seemed somewhat simple and not fully expected.
taste: full bodied with good balance, but still lacking the depth and has a lot of simplicity to it. Not really much on the tones of dark red fruits, liqueur, and eucalyptus.
overall: My experience with older aussies is pretty mixed. This just didn't seem like it would be a representative bottle. I just couldn't get a good read on it.

Dinner at Browntrout (Browntrout - Chicago, IL): Cork crumbled and I had to strain the bottle through cheesecloth. Nose seemed a bit off...maybe heat damaged? Hard to tell. The palate was showing better with blackberries, cranberry, plum, and tar. I don't have a lot of experience with older Australian wines, so I'm not sure if this wine performed like it should, or if it was a bit flawed.

Henschke Heritage tasting with Paul Boothby (Prince Wine Store - Bank Street): A surprisingly dark red colour, but with a fair bit of sediment, it might have been masked a bit. The nose is a cinnamon and tar that started a bit closed, but opened up with some more fruitcake and biscuit elements. The fruit is still there, but starting to move aside. The palette is very soft and the fruit comes back a bit with more lifted spices. Parts of the mid-palette is a bit lacking in fruit balance, but the overall mouthfeel has a great texture with tiny tannins. The finish is a bit shorted than compared to the more recent vintages this evening, but the chocolate after taste is quite special. Probably time to start getting into these now.

Lovely old wine. Slightly meaty, sweaty and spice underlaid with red fruits.
