  Austere and tannic. Did not play well with food of any kind. Being tasted next to a 2012 Vougeout GC didn't help things either.

  This wine was rather disappointing given the year and its GC status. Double-decanted four hours ahead of our bi-weekly wine and food group dinner, it was a little coarse, lacking charm, but typically Echezeaux in that regard. Definitely some intrusive wood showing through the remaining fruit. The wine was, overall, firm but I suspect it will not improve much past this point. Really wanted to like this wine, but I may be generous giving it an 89. Not worth the $150 I paid for it, and I've had much better Faiveley wines.

  Upon opening this gave very little on the nose. It smelled of dry wood and dust, perhaps a bit musty. It took about 2 hours for the funk to blow off and for it to start to open up. Finally it started revealing red cherries and earthy aromas. The tannins are still a bit strong relative to the fruit and acid and the finish is very dry and a bit austere. This was enjoyable but not what I would expect from a Faiveley Echezeaux.

  I Coravin'd a few small pours of this over 6 months with other fellow Burg connoisseurs on different occasions. I must say that each time we were all extremely disappointed. In each case, we all noted a very muted nose, with woody aromas, and a hint of thin tart red cherry and forrest floor. The palate was very dry and tartly tight with only primary red cherry and some mushroom flavors and a very thin dry palate with tart dry woody finish. I finally popped the cork on this and drank the remaining half of this bottle over 3-4 hours after uncorking... and wow what a difference. This baby just needed air and a warmer serving temperature and time. This was a huge lesson in the perils of the Coravin. Don't get me wrong, I love the Coravin for what it can allow me to sample. But I must remember that even though I use the Coravin for a small pour or taste, I really need to give that small pour all the same time, air, ability to warm to room temp from cellar temp, and thoughtful tasting over some time to truly evaluate the wine as I would if I opened the cork. In retrospect, my prior Coravin tastes were too fast and too cold. This time, I noted much riper cherry that unfolded with much ore length in the glass and even red raspberry and boisinberry flavors. The wood components were much more integrated and the earthy mushroom notes provided a much more pleasantly supportive and intriguing frame upon which to propel the complexity of the fruit in the palate. What a learning experience! Hopefully others who read this and have a Coravin can benefit from my past oversight.
