Sunny January day = tasting around off North Valley

Willamette Valley

Introduction

It's rare to get such a beautifully clear day in January, so Ken and I decided to head out and taste wine off of North Valley Road, before winding up heading to Carlton and then back through Dundee. We missed the turn down North Valley, and had to turn around... but before doing so Ken grabbed this nice shot of the frozen trees. It was 23 degrees here this morninig.

Flight 1 - Adelsheim (7 Notes)

I didn't use to be such a big fan of these wines years ago, but in the last few vintages they've been coming on strong and producing some of the most consistent wines around.

  • 2011 Adelsheim Chardonnay Caitlin's Reserve 91 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Smells rich, with mild oak spice; smooth and soft. Creamy palate texture that's quite lithe, with good lean green acidity and vibrancy. Penetrating acids on the finish, which is tart. Great stuff here. This is becoming one of my favorite Oregon Chardonnays.

  • 2011 Adelsheim Auxerrois Blanc Ribbon Springs 86 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge

Light and lean aromas that come across a bit grassy. The palate shows forward fruit and is tart, but overall quite light. A little tart and funky acidic grass on the finish, which is tart and puckering. Nice wine on the nose and palate, but the coating nature of these gnarly acids isn't too pleasing on the finish.

  • 2009 Adelsheim Pinot Noir Elizabeth's Reserve 88 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Chehalem Mountains

Loved this wine in 2008, but the '09 isn't nearly as interesting as that wine was, just showing some generic oakiness and darker fruits on the nose. The palate and finish were both quite lean and tart, making my mouth pucker. Very tight.

  • 2010 Adelsheim Pinot Noir Boulder Bluff 90 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Chehalem Mountains

Tart and very light in aroma, showing just some soft mild cherry. Nice soft texture on the palate, showing tart elegant fruits. Nice balance of acidity and building tannins. Wow, what an explosion of acidity at the end. This is quite tart and puckering. Nice stuff, though tight, this has a great future ahead of it. 90+

  • 2010 Adelsheim Pinot Noir Ribbon Springs 91 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge

From 100% Pommard. This offers lush, creamy aromas with subtle underlying butterscotch and layers of cherry. The palate is more tart and lean, showing some nice green tinged fruit, mild balanced tannins and acidity. Nice and tart. The finish offers a nice eruption of acidity and offering layers and waves of flavor. Nice stuff.

  • 2009 Adelsheim Pinot Noir Bryan Creek Vineyard 88 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Chehalem Mountains

Too much 2009ness on this one, with quite a bit larger fruits, yet more oak, and an overall soft profile on the nose. The palate offers mellow fruit, is large in scale but mild overall. Big and tart finish, with plenty of acid at the end, causing lots of puckering. This is a strange package, with the large scale of fruit on the nose and palate and then the lean puckering acid at the end. Doesn't feel in balanced for me and isn't a seamless experience.

  • 2010 Adelsheim Pinot Noir Zenith Vineyard 92 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

Dark and deep color and aromas which are rich, but layered and complete. Deep in texture, showing nice rich and tart fruits, with impeccable balance. Large body here but it's balanced. Wow, the finish is imposingly structured, but showing some nice tart fruit and very pleasing balanced tannins. The whole thing seems to unfold on your palate after swallowing. Delicious stuff.

Flight 2 - Aramenta (7 Notes)

I haven't stopped here in a while, but it's always a fun stop, and I really enjoy the visit. The Looney's have owned this property since the 1960s and have converted it from orchards to cattle grassing to vines during their ownership. It's the wine that produces Archery Summit's Looney Vineyard wine that they charge $85 for. You can get fruit from the same winery here for $28. It's not nearly as structured as the Archery wine, but still...

  • 2008 Aramenta Cellars Chardonnay 85 Points

    USA, Oregon/Washington

Very spicy wood on the nose. The palate is creamy and showing more spice. Pretty light overall. Funky, gnarly wood splinters on the finish, which I'm not too keen on. Tastes like typical inexpensive chardonnay.

  • 2008 Aramenta Cellars Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 88 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Smooth, clean fruited aromas here. Soft palate, and very mild in flavor. Nearly creamy in texture with a light, lean cherry flavor. Fairly tart finish, but light on complexity. More cherry and mild structure.

  • 2009 Aramenta Cellars Pinot Noir Ribbon Ridge 89 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge

Smooth aromas, with nice soft fruits on a pleasing mild palate. The finish here is more elegant than the 2008, and actually tarter and leaner, with nice acidity and balance. I think this will improve from here. 89+

  • 2009 Aramenta Cellars Pinot Noir Brothers 87 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Smooth fruit, but not much depth on the nose. Nice soft fruits on the palate, though it's pretty straight forward even if tasty. Not too much structure here, though the finish does show some mild acidity.

  • 2010 Aramenta Cellars Tillie Claret 86 Points

    USA, Oregon

This was primarily Merlot based. The aromas are creamy, with forward fruit. The palate is soft and nicely fruited, but very straight forward. Mild acid on the finish which is quite tart and bitter.

  • 2007 Aramenta Cellars Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 88 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Lean and tart aromas. The palate is quite soft, mellow, and creamy for an '07. Nice mild cherry and tart acids here. The finish is lean, with some green fruits. Pretty good, balanced wine.

  • 2007 Aramenta Cellars Chardonnay 89 Points

    USA, Oregon/Washington

All done in neutral oak, aged for 10-11 months. This was quite a bit better than the 2008, showing some tart and lean green-tinged aromas. The palate is soft, creamy, light and really nice. Almost some candy flavors minus the sweetness. The finish is tart, with nice lingering acidity. Tart, puckering.

Flight 3 - Bergström (7 Notes)

The 2011 lineup here was one of the best lineups I've had from Bergström... perhaps the leaner year was a good thing for my palate, as usually I'm not a big fan of these highly rated wines.

  • 2011 Bergström Pinot Noir Old Stones 84 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

This spent 8 months in neutral french oak. The aromas are very soft, mild and light. On the palate this is really lean and light, nearly off putting in texture and just too lean without any fruit or structure to keep things alive. Again, lean finish with mild tannins, tartness, and some cherry, but things are quite bitter, showing a grittiness and not enough fruit considering the lack of structure.

  • 2011 Bergström Pinot Noir Cumberland Reserve 89 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Surprisingly, this is my favorite of the last 5 Cumberland Reserves. There's lots of funk on the nose, maybe some mild baby diapers. Better fruit flavors on the palate, and it's quite gritty and grippy. The finish is tart, with bitter puckering acids, but somehow feels a nice complete package.

  • 2011 Bergström Pinot Noir Gregory Ranch 90 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton

Fairly light aromas which are soft and mellow, but nice balance. The palate is soft, showing nice tartness on a mellow frame with lots of layers. Fairly pretty, with soft puckering acidity. The finish expresses mild tartness, and a good bloom of fruit and structure. Nice acid which leaves the mouth really puckering despite the wine's sense of lightness. Nice structure but this really is too young to be experiencing this wine properly. Need to try this in 5 years, as I think will be quite a bit prettier and seamless. 90+

  • 2011 Bergström Pinot Noir de Lancellotti 91 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Chehalem Mountains

Mild funkiness, quite smooth though elegant aromas showing some soft cherry. Really delicious palate with great body volume. Nice structural balance, though tight. The finish is tart, showing nice fruit. Wound up, but this will too open up nicely in the future. 91+

  • 2011 Bergström Pinot Noir Temperance Hill 91 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

Mild funky aromas, with some mushroom and subtle earth. Much more fruit immediately on palate entry, but tannins quickly build on top. This is very deeply structured, though it somehow maintains a creamy texture and a tart frame. Intense structure on the finish, but it's quite long, tart and drying. Puckering though pretty. I think this will be another beautiful ager. 91+

  • 2011 Bergström Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard 90 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton

Soft, mellow, and elegant aromas. Soft texture on the palate, showing nice fruitiness. It's mild and mellow, with nice building fruit though still tight. Really gritty and grippy on the finish, but this too shows nice structure for future development without being over the top as a Shea can often be. 90+

  • 2010 Bergström Pinot Noir Le Pré du Col Vineyard 91 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge

Light in color and light in aromatic complexion, though quite pretty with some high tone fruit and nice soft soil driven berries. Very soft. Very mellow and elegant palate, with soft fruits on entry. Mellow again on the finish, though very smooth and seamless. Things get gritty and that's what lingers long after swallowing. Another nice wine that will age beautifully. 91+

Flight 4 - Lemelson (5 Notes)

Fun to revisit some of these wines that I tasted on release mid last year. Definitely seeing some positive evolution.

  • 2011 Lemelson Vineyards Dry Riesling 86 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Very soft aromas, and smell a little soapy. Nice palate, but it feels quite sweet (it's not... .4% RS), but nice fruits here. Mild and tart finish, leaving the mouth puckering.

  • 2010 Lemelson Vineyards Pinot Noir Thea's Selection 89 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

This has come along since the early view I had of it last year. Currently showing green aromas that are clean and lean; almost saline and sterile. The palate is soft and light in flavors, with an odd funk and coats the mouth, making it pucker. The finish has more acids dial up, but it's coupled with nice creamy red fruits like cherry. Really quite grippy and structured for this wine.

  • 2010 Lemelson Vineyards Pinot Noir Stermer Vineyard 90 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Really nice delicious fruit on the aromas here, which are fairly mellow. This follows through onto the palate, which also offers some gritty tannins. Very smooth and elegant finish, showing tart puckering fruit. Quite deeply structured, with sharp tannins.

  • 2010 Lemelson Vineyards Pinot Noir Cuvée X 89 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Different experience with this wine today. Smells of briar, with lots of voluptuous fruit, which is very smooth and sweet. Mellow palate, with soft fruits. The finish surprisingly turns more lean and tart, which is not usual for my experience of this wine. Far better than last May.

  • 2010 Lemelson Vineyards Pinot Noir Jerome Reserve 87 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

This wine is quite forward on the nose, though things are fairly smooth and creamy. Very creamy and smooth on the palate, though now showing some tartness to the fruit despite the sizable presence. Tart and puckering finish, but not really smooth.

Flight 5 - Noble Pig (5 Notes)

Without knowing where to go, we found a parking spot in Carlton and went to the first door we saw. I think pigs taste delicious, so it seemed a good fit. Too bad the wines don't taste as good as the creature on the cover.

  • 2010 Noble Pig Pinot Blanc 87 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, McMinnville

Creamy and luscious aromas that are fairly soft and mellow. The palate is soft and creamy, with light flavors and mild acidity. The finish is tart with a kind of strange earthiness and funk. Tart, with flavors like an imaginary banana brulee.

  • 2009 Noble Pig Pinot Blanc 84 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, McMinnville

Soft and lean aromas. Bigger fruit on the palate, on a Creamy yet chunky texture that's odd. Some acid and tartness on the finish. They game some food pairing that I forget, but all I wrote down was "lame food pairing; made it worse."

  • 2010 Noble Pig Pinot Gris 84 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, McMinnville

Very smooth and soft aromas. Soft and creamy palate, showing soft and mild acidity but lots of really sweet fruit. Fruity flavors on the finish, including lemons. Not really into this.

  • 2010 Noble Pig Pinot Noir 87 Points

  • 2009 Noble Pig Pinot Noir 88 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, McMinnville

Enjoyed this more than the 2010, but this too was quite light and mellow... it's just a hit more elegant than the 2010.

Flight 6 - Dinner at Paulee (1 Note)

I was originally disappointed when Farm to Fork closed down because I used to love dining there after a trip to the valley. However, it certainly had slipped a bit at the end. Once I heard the CV's of the head folks at Paulee though I was quite excited to give it a shot. I was skeptical after I heard Daniel Mondok left Paulee (can the guy stay ANYWHERE?) but after talking to the chef's it sounded like perhaps it was a good thing. We sat at the Chef's table and talked to the folks at the restaurant throughout the evening. We did a 5 course meal and almost everything was fantastic. The only bummer were the mains, actually. But the foie gras and the escargot were divine. As was the coliflower dish. We will definitely be coming back here.
