France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Apple and pear throughout with good+ weight. Richer, more powerful than Genevrières, but not as vibrant or finessed. Good now through 2026.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Rich and enchanting on both nose and palate. Lots of power with good density, while also elegant and weightless. Moderate acidity. Probably better to enjoy younger, 2021-2028, than celllaring long-term.
Tasting, brief note. Black and red berries with very engaging spice and floral notes. Very good concentration and equally good balance. Very impressive now, with the bones to clearly improve with another decade in the cellar.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Apple with savory spice and background floral character. Subdued nose, more robust flavors with good depth and structure, and a bright, minerally finish with very good length. Very good now, better to cellar a few years.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Apple, spiced apple and ripe pear. Savory spice, bright textures, very good length sows lots of finesse. Very good potential, better to cellar another year or three.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Ripe apple and peach with toasted walnuts. Good weight and better length with seemingly unctuous textures. I'd think this best on the younger side, 2020-2026.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Ripe stone fruit like the previous wines, but here we start finding the structure to make this cellar-worthy. Floral with ripe peach and slightly sweet spice, but clearly the acidity and minerality that keeps this bright and vibrant. Better to cellar a few more years.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Rich stone fruit with ripe apple and complex spice and textures, making this already charming as well as complex. Seemed to show Grand Cru density to me. Very impressive wine, very cellar worthy.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Ripe start with floral touches. Gets softer and lighter toward the middle, then brighter and minenrally on finish. Good weight and length. Good+ overall now.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet
Tasting, brief note. Also floral with ripe stone fruit and apple throughout, but this also easily retains balance and harmony. Very good villages level. Very good now, with the ability to age and possibly improve.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Dense and very concentrated. Also ripe, with faint tropical hints. Not particularly forthcoming right now, but there is so much here. Cellar at least 2-3 more years.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Slight reduction. Ripe stone fruit throughout. Like Maltroie, this is backward and this also seems more muscular and less accessible. Good stuff here, but it will take time/ air.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Very rich and complex aromas. Palate is also rich with a broad array of fruit flavors - lemon curd, poached pear and dried apricot amongst them. Dense and long, not quite showing the textural brightness as another bottle from late last year, and not quite as texturally charming and "Genevrières" as I expected. Give this time.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Very rich and concentrated. A bit of new oak protrudes for now, but that will dissipate shortly. So much good stuff going on, but there is nothing demure about this wine.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Fleshy with a very fruit-forward start, but then brightly textured and more exciting middle forward. Very good density, good length.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Floral start. Plenty of apple and pear aromas, with good concentration and spice. Similar palate, also with very good concentration, bright textures and good+ length.
Tasting, brief note. Complex aromas of ripe peach, apple and lemon curd. Lots of spice, including some new oak that needs another 6-12 months to fully integrate. so much here, with impressive concentration and already emerging nuance. 91-92 points. Cellar another year or three+.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Less expressive or density or complexity vs Clos des Mouches, so maybe I was just expecting more. Enjoyable and rich, but I found it slightly flat today vs its typical vibrant character. Still good, 88-89 points?
Tasting, brief note. Bright red cherry everywhere with some background black cherry as well. Elegantly styled with sneaky structure and good+ length, showcasing savory spice nicely. 91-92 points.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. A surprising elegant wine for the vintage, with so much going on, but so subtle and restrained. You have to pay attention, but early fall flowers, boysenberry, black cherry, braised meat, anise and black pepper all seemed to come through to varied degrees in the two sips I enjoyed. This was marginally showing Grand Cru density, but I expect this will put on weight with time in the cellar, 93-94+ point potential, 2030 forward.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Dense and nicely rich, but also with good balance, even if not quite as texturally elegant as I expect from Genevrières in more typical vintages.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Lots of ripe apple, preserved lemon peel with savory spice. Good concentration with an intense depth, but also nicely weightless. 92-93+ point potential.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Both red and black cherry aromas and flavors showing more Vosne than Nuits character to me to start, but then becomes more meaty and burly from middle to finish. Should drink well young with some air, but age gracefully for decades.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Powerful black and red cherry that is dense to start, is tasty throughout, even though it gets a little brooding by the long finish. Very good 91-92 point potential, probably 2030 forward.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Black fruit with faint spice aromas. Most concentration on palate vs nose. with good length and very good balance. Not a powerhouse, but requires attention to appreciate, and it deserves that attention.
Tasting, brief note. Enticing aromatic start, nicely floral with orchard fruit. Good flavors as well, not quite as endearing, but with the potential to catch up. Very good+ for its level and price, 87-88 point potential.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Nuits Villages
Tasting, brief note. Wonderful aromatic start with red cherry and spice. Similar palate, slightly backward today. Good+ length. Cellar until at least 2022, 88+ point potential, so very good for its price and level.
Tasting, brief note. From a vineyard near the Vosne cemetery and Croix Rameau 1er Cru. An array of red fruit start-to-finish that comes across as bigger and more dense than Villages. Nicely persistent as well. First time tasting this producer's wine.
Tasting, brief note. Slightly reduced. Red cherry, some black cherry. Dense and fleshy, but needed more air for the reduction to dissipate, so tough to fully/ fairly assess.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Clearly on the rich side, showing baked apple and tropical fruit notes. Very good density. Not particularly nuanced today, but it's much too young. Very good potential, but I wouldn't touch a bottle until at least 2025 or later.
Tasting, brief note. Red and black cherry throughout that comes across as elegant to start, then picks up weight through long finish. Give this 5+ years in the cellar, but very good 90+ point potential here.
Tasting, brief note. Black fruit to start, then more nuanced middle forward. Long, surprising expanding finish. Very good already young, better 2021 forward. 90-91 points.
Tasting, brief note. Rich start with bright aromas and flavors, faint spice and floral hints. Good+ weight with an engaging mineral-driven finish. I typically prefer this over Santenots, but for 2016 prefer the latter.
Tasting, brief note. Intense concentration with rich black and red cherry and some sweet spice notes. This will require 5-10+ years int he cellar, but has 92+ point potential. I usually prefer Nico's Caillerets over Santenots, but in 2016 prefer this Santenots.
Tasting, brief note. Spiced aromas with red and black cherry. Dense and powerful cherry aromas, seemingly compact and tightly wound. Cellar until 2026 forward.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Also dense and rich with a backward, burly character, but also clearly impressive concentration. Needs a decade+ in the cellar to soften and unwind, but 92+ point potential.
Tasting, brief note. Lots of red fruit with spice notes and ripe nuance with good depth. Less forthcoming on the palate, with some brawny structure, but clearly the concentration to evolve into an exciting wine 2026 forward, 90-91+ potential.
Tasting, brief note. Like Verseuil, this is also big, powerful and somewhat restrained. Lots of bright red fruit with very good length and an exciting textural finish. Cellar until 2026 or later, 91+ point potential.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Black cherry and plum with with so much fruit with plenty of depth, plus anise, allspice and dried herbs. Clearly tannic, yet graceful. Very long finish. I'd give this until at least 2030. 92-93 point potential.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Nuits Villages
Tasting, brief note. Red and black cherry with earth and roasted game, finishing with some austere tannins. Overall good for its level. Better to cellar another year or two.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges
Tasting, brief note. Black cherry, black pepper, roasted meat. Also slightly firm in the middle, but overall enjoyable now, with upside if cellared for a few years.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges
Tasting, brief note. Charming combination of red and black cherry with woodsy spice and floral hints. Medium weight, good length. Celar this a few years.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Surprisingly accessible for the vineyard. Black and red cherry throughout with earth, plum and woodsy spice hints. Moderate weigh, good length, good+ balance. 89-91 point potential, depending on whether or not it picks up weight with some age.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Complex array of blue, black and red berries with spice hints and very refined tannins, but finishes with sneaky power. Just needs a few years in the cellar. 89-90 point potential.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. So much concentration shows the effect of the weather problems, but the fruit is bright as well as powerful. Very good weight and length, where it seems to get slightly more firm. Better 2026 forward.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Black cherry and plum with roasted meat and dark chocolate. Very dense, very concentration. Slightly firm and backward, this has so much substance that is already interesting, but really needs plenty of cellar time to really strut its stuff. 92-93 point potential, 2030 forward.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Bright red fruit with good energy and some black cherry notes along with spice and earth hints. Very elegant and very good length.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Elegantly styled with as much red fruit as black, with licorice and allspice. Elegantly styled with good weight. Perhaps not quite showing Grand Cru density yet, but already very texturally exciting. 90-92 point potential, base don how much weight this gains with time in bottle.
Tasting, brief note. Unusually mostly black fruit vs red. Subtle spice with good structure giving a charming, lean, classic style here. Good now, further upside from here.
Tasting, brief note. Red berry and cherry start-to-finish with an elegant start, then getting bigger and more dense middle forward. Long finish gets slightly firm, yet well balanced throughout. Cellar 5+ years. 90-91 point potential.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Complex red and black cherry aromas with background savory spice. Similar flavors with good density and very good length. Slightly firm from middle to finish. Needs a decade to show its full potential, with 91-93 point potential.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Red and black cherry with some berry that shows so much complexity and nuance already. Simultaneously comes across as rich, muscular and texturally weightless, a difficult accomplishment for such a young wine. One of the day's highlights. I might be underrating this wine at "95 points."
Tasting, brief note. Almost all red fruit with black fruit hints, all accompanied by subtle spice with impressive density for Villages level wine. If blind, I'd have thought 1er Cru. Very good balance and length for its level. So pretty now, but better to wait at least a year or three.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. As usual, a cuvee from NSG that comes across as very Vosne-styled. Elegantly spiced with more complexity and textural nuance vs the Vosne Villages, but less density. Very good 90-91 point potential.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. More black vs red berry with some rich plum notes and delicate spice. Long, expanding finish is incredibly bright with brilliant and sophisticated tannins. Just so good, with the only negative thing I can say is that the Clos Vougeot tasted next was even more exciting.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. More red vs black fruit here is complex combination. Long and elegant finish is already refined, but slightly compact. More powerful than the Ruchottes-Chambertin, yet also weightless.
Tasting, brief note. Ever-so-slight reduction with red berry and cherry start-to-finish. Less powerful than many 2016s, but so refined and elegant with sneaky good+ length and weight. I preferred this over Clos du Château tasted next.
Tasting, brief note. Black and red cherry with more weight and density than Colombiere just tasted, but less complex or refined. Still very good+ Villages level wine.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Floral and spice driven start with complex cross-section of black and red berry aromas and flavors. Powerful without overt heaviness, and a very long, exciting, minerally finish. So charming now, with enormous upside from 2025.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. More dense and ripe than Reignots, but not quite as nuanced yet, or as texturally exciting. I think I enjoyed Reignots slightly more today, but this Echezeaux has greater (94-95+ point) upside.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. More black vs red fruit with meaty and powerful mouthfeel and textures. Nicely spiced finish with very good length. Very good potential, better 2026 forward.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. A bit more powerful vs VV, and also more muscular, just slightly less complex. Accessible now, but this will be more expressive and expansive with 3-5 more years in the cellar.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Bright red fruit to start captures your attention and imagination. Getting increasingly dense as it progresses towards a long, expanding finish. One of the day's highlights, this has 93-95 point potential, but will require at least a decade to fully express itself, and two decades will even be better.
2007 Salon Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Clearly on the rich side, showing baked apple and tropical fruit notes. Very good density. Not particularly nuanced today, but it's much too young. Very good potential, but I wouldn't touch a bottle until at least 2025 or later.

2016 Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers 92 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

2016 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Romanée St. Vivant 95 Points

2016 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Ruchottes-Chambertin 94 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. More black vs red berry with some rich plum notes and delicate spice. Long, expanding finish is incredibly bright with brilliant and sophisticated tannins. Just so good, with the only negative thing I can say is that the Clos Vougeot tasted next was even more exciting.

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
Tasting, brief note. Ever-so-slight reduction with red berry and cherry start-to-finish. Less powerful than many 2016s, but so refined and elegant with sneaky good+ length and weight. I preferred this over Clos du Château tasted next.

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

2016 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Echezeaux 94 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

2016 Hubert Lignier Clos de la Roche
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Bright red fruit to start captures your attention and imagination. Getting increasingly dense as it progresses towards a long, expanding finish. One of the day's highlights, this has 93-95 point potential, but will require at least a decade to fully express itself, and two decades will even be better.
