40 years on: A global 1983 retrospective: Petrol, pear, saffron. Creamy, dense with a long finish and a great balance despite having a kiss of residual sugar and even botrytis.

20 Top Wines of the 1983 Vintage: Three whites. The Laville Haut Brion (96 pts) is incredibly impressive: so young and vibrant, with a perfect balance, intense and expressive, all centered around a rainbow of highly precise fresh tropical fruit notes. This seems to be an immortal wine, highly impressive but would need a bit more complexity to reach the next level. The Y d‘Yquem 1985 (94+pts) was added to the 1983 lineup as we were one white short, and it didn‘t disappoint. A complex dry Sauternes, with all the telltale aromatics and lots of freshness, missing just a bit of a cleaner, more expressive nose to reach an even higher score. The Pavillon Blanc (92pts) is more evolved than the others and shows less precise and clean but has a good acidic spine and lots of minerality giving additional lift.

Decanting: Not decanted, no decanting necessary.

1983 vintage horizontal with >20 wines, mostly from Bordeaux. Key observations: 1/ Acceptable vintage for Champagne with DP over-delivering, 2/ Laville Haut Brion is a masterpiece among the whites, 3/ Bordeaux is going strong at 40 years of age with stand-outs Latour and Margaux. 4/ No need to chase any Napa’s from the vintage, 5/ off-piste Italians kept up impressively with Soldera an undisputed medalist.

Tasting note:
Given availability challenges, this is the ’85 rather than the ’83 like the rest of the flight. A spicy touch of saffron, baked pear and peach pie fruit form a Sauternes-like aroma profile. A structured, even muscular palate with sufficiently fresh acidity. This one is fully alive and kicking while showing age-appropriate features.

Lemon, lime, dried pineapple, and a light touch of caramel with a background note of honey create the nose. The wine is bright, and semi-sweet, and finishes with a sweet/tart, lime and green apple note. Drink from 2023-2025.

Exactly like what you imagine a dry d'Yquem would smell like with its honey, dried apricot, caramel, butterscotch, dried pineapple, and spice-filled perfume. Crisp, semi-sweet, and salty on the palate, the finish with its mild, honey accent that rides along with its yellow and orange fruits seal the deal. Drink from 2023-2027.

An absolute gem! A beautiful dark amber colour. Reformed in 2014 and released from the Chateau in 2019. After just over an hour open, the wine took on notes of honeysuckle, melon, green apple and subtle tones of honey. Long on the finish. Bold but not too sweet. Drinking absolutely perfectly and for many more years to come!

"90th" Joint Birthday: Beautiful golden colour. Smells just like a great Yquem - peach, guava, apricot, pear and orange peel - lots of complexity and appeal. The palate switches it up with spice and lots crunchy acidity, long and clear. Unreal condition and a superb dry wine.

A private dinner with friends (Restaurant 212 **, Amsterdam, NL): Pale golden colour, honeyed, orange zest, warm spices, creamy lemon, dry but rich, harmonious palate, deep and intense, still with lots of minerally energy, firm but gentle bitters, excellent resonance and length. Incredible quality for age and vintage.

Old Bordeaux in Tokyo (Brasserie Paul Bocuse): With Chatters, Vintomas and Mats @Brasserie Paul Bocuse. Theme: Old Bordeaux.
2023-04-01

Fruit salad, pineapple and grilled coconut flakes. Acidity is restrained and the wine comes with a bit of a fatty mouth feeling. Fairly intense, short and tivoli-fruity.

When the label was revealed, I was honestly surprised. This didn't come across as special. Not a very big step up from the hordes of white Graves.

Cellartracker in the flesh with Stefan, Akiko, Mats & Tomas (Paul Boucasse, Tokyo): "Served blind.
Medium minus intensity initially but, with agitation, cedar, sweet spice over a little apple, citrus, lemon, smidge of lime and, with time, a little butter. In the mouth it has medium plus intensity acidity, honey, muted fruit is slightly sour showing green apple, a little butter, plenty of textured burr, needs time to open, slight non-intrusive alcohol warmth. Hmm, fairly enjoyable.
I didn't think this was from Pessac/Graves - it felt like a worked white from the Medoc from a prestigious producer and from the early noughties."

Definitely one of the most interesting drinking experiences I've had. Because Y wasn't made every year in the past, getting to drink it is an opportunity to experience 'dry' Sauternes.

Medium gold. We left it in the bottle with the cork out but didn't decant. After 20-30 minutes in the glass there were wonderful aromas of honey, apricots and spice - reminding me of a classic Sauternes smell. The wine itself is of course dry, but on the palate it still showed strong bursts of acidity along with the aforementioned Sauternes profile. After approximately 1.5 hours after opening the bottle, the taste started to fade, but the wonderful aromas remained.

If you still have this in your cellar, I would drink it soon - and take the short drinking window into account (best between 30-65 minutes after uncorking and leaving in the bottle). A truly unique wine - I don't imagine there are many old Ygrecs left.

My first experience in Yquem Dry White back vintage, it’s quite a wonderful experience.
Smells like a dyquem sweet with the notes of pineapple, apricot, honey, citrus and slightly floral. Palate is balance, elegance, deep and dense with lingering finish and laser acidity.
Definitely on the peak!

Light green-gold almost Sauvignon Blanc colour. Nose is lanolin and not much more except for faint sherbert lemons boiled sweets candy from childhood. Palate is half-burnt almonds. Very little length. Disappointingly unmemorable.

During a blind tasting dinner. Amber color pointing to a rich, well aged wine. I guessed this one correctly. Smells like a Sauternes in the nose but is dry on the palate. Quite a shock/surprise for most people who had such a wine for the first time. Nutty aromas, apricot, smoke. Not so much my thing but well made.

Château d'Yquem dinner with Sandrine Garbay (Restaurant Zoldering, Amsterdam, NL): Double decanted. Made in the old way (pre-2000), from grapes harvested late in October and November which were fully ripe but showed little or no noble rot. Pale golden colour, smoky and dry, substantial bitters, not very expressive on the nose but with a lovely finesse on the palate, vanilla and quince, develops well with oxygen, slightly sharp finish. A very generous contribution from Steven.

Wow! So curious about this wine which I bought just a week ago at an auction that I couldn't resist opening the first bottle (lowest level us/ms) of a full case of 12. Beautiful yellow-golden colour. First glass a little funky in the nose which blew off after 15 minutes. Double decanted the remainder of the bottle. Second glass pure, clean and rich. Very Sauternes on the nose, but dry and fresh on the palate with a tiny off-dry edge. Layered and complex. Rich fruit bowl on the nose with stone fruits, lemon (curd) and melon most prominent. Long finish. Fully mature but still going strong. Should last for 10+ more years easily. What a pity this wine is so rare.

By far the surprise of the tasting, this Ygrec proved conclusively how brilliantly white Bordeaux can age - and it isn’t even from the tenderloin district of Pessac. Pale to medium yellow and nicely fragrant of yellow stone fruits and long on the palate. The usual waxy odor and texture of the Pessac versions of the genre is nowhere to be found; it’s just about clean fruit. Fairly delicate but not feeble. Very easy to like for both connoisseurs and non-fanatics.

Epic Bordeaux for an Epic Birthday!; 9/1/2021-9/12/2021 (Paris & Bordeaux): From a 375. Pours a deep golden color. What an interesting wine! I have never had one of these with much age and it's quite a bit different. You get some of that carmelization and maybe almost fruit compote. In the beginning it's almost maybe a touch sweeter, but with some time that seems to shift away. Really interesting.
