3rd time I have had this wine. It is holding it's own but does not seem to have improved much since I last had it in 2015. A dirty purple color. Aromas of wet earth. Integrated tannins with cassis, blackberry and tutti frutti. A little sweeter than the Leoville Barton we drank next to it. Some oxidation on the finish. 91-92 points.

Opened by Blue Oval at an offline and tried next to the 2011 Tempier Bandol La Migoua. I liked this bottle better. This property was recently purchased by Pax Mahle and others and will go into their estate wines. Deep purple color. Floral nose. Wonderful acidity that holds all the sweetness in check. Long spicy finish. I have 2 more bottle and am in no rush to drink them. 98 points.

Purchased on sale for $40 (normally $75). A blend of 25% Chardonnay, 25% Arbanne, 25% Petit Meslier, 25% Pinot Blanc from the Montagne des Riems. An interesting wine since 75% of the fruit comes from legacy grapes (grapes which can no longer be planted in Champagne). Zero dosage. I last had the 2007 version of this wine. Aged primarily in stainless steel. Interesting and unique bottling. Very crisp with chalk and citrus notes. Lighter body with a fine bead. You can hold this for a few more years comfortably. 92 points

This normally sells for $60. I bought this at auction for $35. 100% Sangiovese from Panzano aged for 12 months on it's skins in orci (clay amphora). The orci are made in the families terracotta factory. This is one of the newer wines made by the estate having been first released in the 2009 vintage. This had a funky nose and I would have been well advised to decant it. Sweet cherries and lavenders on a soft palate. An earthy wine with moderate tannins. I would wait to open this wine and give it more time in bottle. 88 points.

5/6/20, 1:47 PM - I follow the wineries in SW Michigan much closer than up North since I have a vineyard near South Haven so I'll confine my recommendations to the SW part of the State. I really like how Modales has started out. They only opened their tasting room a year ago but have some impressive wines. Also White Pine, Karma Vista and Dablon have some nice wines but not at the same level as Wyncroft. I'll be revisiting a lineup from Hickory Creek for the first time since they came under new ownership in the next few days and will post notes.

  • Vino Me commented:

6/17/20, 2:04 PM - Never visited that winery. Passed it by many times but never stopped in. They specialize in Rhone varietals which in my opinion are not the best suited grapes for SW Michigan. I will visit at some point.

Jean Stodden Winery Visit (Rech, Germany); 7/4/2016-7/10/2016 (Rech, Germany (Ahr Valley)): Tasted at the winery with Alexander Stodden. We were lucky that he had a bottle of this open because it is not normally available for tasting. The 2010 vintage of this wine finished first in a Decanter tasting for best Pinot Noir outside of Burgundy. This wine was only released in May 2016. The grapes are sourced from the oldest vines in the Grand Cru Recher Herrenberg vineyard. Herrenberg is a South facing steeply sloped (60% slope) and terraced vineyard. The vines used for this wine are 90 years old and are ungrafted making them extremely unique and valuable. Aged in 100% new oak barriques. amazing how well this young wine showed. Ruby red color. Subtle integrated tannins. Smooth and silky texture. The most feminine of his wines and very elegant. Notes of slate, black cherries, strawberries and wet stones. Long finish. This wine is extremely long aged. Purchased one for $105. I won't touch mine for years. 95-96 points.
  • Vino Me commented:

5/2/19, 1:50 PM - Of the 3 you mentioned, I would lean toward the Sonnenberg. Although my favorite vineyard in the Ahr would be the Krauterberg near Walporzheim. The Garkammer vineyard near Walporzheim is also very special but it is a monopole site and only Adeneuer makes wines from there.

Courtesy of VM. Lovely pink color with an odd note of a spent firework cartridge- a little sulfur, a little gunpowder, a little smoke- rather unique. Better on the palate, where one gets a nice bit of fruit, primarily strawberry. I am interested to see where this goes from here.
  • Vino Me commented:

1/2/19, 10:48 AM - I talked to Jim Lester about the gunpowder aroma. He says it is sulfur compounds trapped in the bottle. I sulfured the wine on 9/15 and bottled on 9/24 before fermentation was finished. Normally sulfur would blow off in an open air fermentation. Nothing I can do about it now. If I make this again, I'll have to go more natural and not sulfur the wine (which acts as a preservative).

8/6/18, 10:33 AM - Whites certainly do better than Reds in Michigan but there are some very good reds being made in Southwest Michigan. Wyncroft makes excellent Pinot Noir, Cabernet and Merlot. I am biased though since I own a Pinot Noir vineyard in Southwest Michigan. Nonetheless, Southwest Michigan has a long way to go but the growth in vineyard acreage and number of producers has really taken off.

This was the finishing bottle of the 9 champagnes we tasted in the flight. However, like the Clouet 08 Brut, this bottle comes off a bit rich for me. Gourmet IV opened by Allred. I'm not generally a Kistler PN fan, but this was a beauty. Cherry and red fruits with nicely integrated tannins and velvety mouthfeel.

Opened alongside a 2005 Ladera Napa Cab. Decanted for 2 hours before dinner. Blackish purple color. What a difference 5 years make. The power and concentration of this wine has dissipated. This wine is in a dumb phase with a muted nose. Very ungiving and closed. Some currant and herbal notes. Lacked depth now. Give this time to come around. My wife did not think this would ever come around. 89-90+ points
