Wonderful, complete, compelling stuff ! Probably drinking at about peak for me - still real depth of fruit, but no hard angles. No notes taken, but a reminder of how much I love this wine - and this vintage in particular.

Aged very well. Fruit is quite dominant and forward. Maybe unusually so for an Aglianico. I found it balanced with respect to acid and tannin structure. Although an excellent wine, not one that rang my bell.

This was a really interesting bottle. It needed 1.5hrs of air and then it had the clearest aroma and taste of mint I’ve ever come across in a wine. Secondary to that was cassis, and some sous bois. It was very smooth, with medium acidity and nice well integrated tannins.

Another excellent bottle of this and this seems to be in the zone now. Beautifully layered, perfumed, and totally classic expression of Taurasi with notes of red berries, some darker fruit too, volcanic ash, minerality, cedar wood, some savory herbs, tobacco leaf, a touch of orange zest, some pepper. It‘s medium-bodied, with excellent persistence, it has medium tannin that is present but very good quality and there is beautifully high acidity adding tons of freshness and tension. Long finish with very good complexity. A really beautiful classic Taurasi of the very highest level. In a perfect drinking window now and probably for the next 5-7 years.

Interesting to see the variation across notes. This bottle was all dark fruit and sous bois, low acidity. To me it was fine, but felt a little tired. Bottle was decanted about an hour before drinking.

Color: dark ruby Nose: a certain barnyard note dissipates with time in the air, leaving room for a nice ripe plum fruit character, and a lot of tobacco. There is also a variegated support cast with rosemary, blood, chestnut, a hint of smoke making apparitions Palate: very bright high acidity, medium-high tannins and a medium full body. Super fresh and light on its feet despite the age, thanks to the lively acidity. Confirms the nose with a prevalence.of th blue fruit Finish: medium-long
Very nice food wine, needs about a hour and a half of air to show all it has to give. No rush to drink IMO. Prepare the steak!

Last bottle and notes as below for first one, the only difference was a fading rim, and a more powerful fruity nose, this is a good wine but is it overpriced, to me yes, other Aglianico bottlings have been as good at a much lower price point.

Notevole.

WOW, what a gigantic nose overflowing with super ripe raspberries and spice. Really smells like a framboise Lambic. This is full-bodied and rich with really ripe, but acidic raspberries, cranberries, sous bois and spice box!
Later, 2 1/2 hours in decanter: Mellowing and evolving, but still effusive! Extraordinary nose of the freshest, ripest, right off the vine raspberries, tree bark, compost, pine needles. The palate is reminiscent of a great Barolo, loads of baked black cherry fruit, mint, pine needles galore, pine forest floor and dried flowers. this wine is extraordinary. What a tour de force! This seems fully mature, but may very well be continuing to evolve. Drink now-2032 96
P.S. Every time I return to the glass, something new emerges. This is a wine of class. A distinct saltiness in the finish. I can't wait to see what this wine is waiting to reveal in the future.
Another flawed bottle purchased from superiore.de (heat damage as usual). I wonder about my 2 remaining bottles - not! I already know the answer I'm afraid...

The 5 year wait has payed off. Oak is integrated, tannins sandy. Yet it shows fruit like a young wine. Irresistable at the moment but should last at least 10 more years.

Updating my cellar, drank 3 over the Spring / Summer so no notes, but LIVONIESTER's description is accurate and I agree with his appraisal too. Still benefits hugely from at least a couple of hours decant. For me probably more like 92 for now, but defiantly ++ (more sure of this than I can be for any other wine) so all in all 94. (I had another case of 6 a few years back, and this has hardly budged an inch...it was gorgeous then as well, although needed longer in the decanter to open up - one of my very favourite wines across numerous vintages....just wish I owned more of it!)

Very dark in color. Amazing nose of dark fruit & floral (violets?). Could have smelled this all night it was so wonderful. Had this with steak & salad and it needed the fat to cut the tannins. Absolutely delicious, though. Well balanced. Sorry this was our only bottle from this vintage. Will definitely last another 10 years.

Quite dark, saturated ruby/black. Breathtakingly beautiful nose just loaded with fresh cut flowers, black fruits, tar, spice and cedar. Full-bodied and still tannic. The palate has flowers and blue and black fruits as well as a long graphite-filled finish. This is absolutely beautiful right now but has plenty of freshness and tannin for continued cellaring. Drink now-2030+ 95

Second experience with this wine, the first more than three years ago. Tasted double blind. The clean bouquet features violets, ripe berries, and fresh herbs forward, backed by graphite and broad ranging minerality, all quite appealing. My first inclination of provenance, based on the bouquet's freshness and total absence of VA, was Bolgheri, or modernly styled Margaux. All elements of the bouquet improved with air, quickly reaching the captivating. More of the same on the palate, including cleanness, atypical of Italy other than Bolgheri. Lively and seamless! Juicy, purple berry forward attack, suave and coating middle, bracing back, exceptional finish. Deft balance throughout. Freshness, cleanness, and the absence of heat, pushed me to Marguax, my guess. Decidedly surprising reveal. Probably the cleanest and most balanced Taurasi that I have tasted.
Still young; it will likely continue evolving until 2028-2032 and last through 2038-2040.

Ruby red in colour, just a bit of faded rim, quite full fruit mainly cherry and plums on the nose and cherry and faint strawberries and a bit of tar in the mouth, acidity medium and some tannins still present. Very decent drink but can't see much improvement as several older Taurasi's in the past have not gone on to anything better. Mastroberardino seems to be getting back to where he was at the beginning with this wine, there was a definite slump some years back, but this is good to very good.

Color is starting to look more mature. Not much on the nose. Palate is the star. Nice dusty tannins, some mature fruit. Medium finish. I liked it. Don’t expect it to improve much. I’ll probably drink my last 2 bottles in the next year or 2.

Opened 3 hrs in advance. Ruby red with some evolution. Nose: initially some animal touches and notes of mature cheese, which blew off, then ripe cherry, raspberry, chocolate, tar and meat stock. Full fleshy fruit on the palate, med++ bodied only med acidity, and tannins that are getting together. Long aftertaste. A young and charming adult who can belie his age. Already gorgeous but no time to hurry. A first class maturing Italian wine that is up to par with, let’s say, high end red burgundies or clarets of the same age.

Long maceration time, aged for 30 months in French oak barriques and large, Slavonian oak botti casks. 13,5% alcohol.
Beautiful, somewhat translucent blackish-red color. Dense, brooding and rather sweet-toned nose with rich, complex aromas of wizened dark plums an dates, some raisiny tones, a little bit of gamey meat, light perfumed notes of dried flowers, a hint of blackcurrant juice and - surprisingly - a subtle touch of lactic blueberry yoghurt. Overall the nose feels very attractive and beautifully fragrant. The wine is ripe, full-bodied and chewy on the palate with intense, juicy flavors of black cherries, strawberries, some umami notes of raw meat, a little bit of perfumed floral character, light boysenberry tones, a slightly wild hint of something funky and a touch of gravelly minerality. The wine is high in acidity with very ample, ripe and textural tannins that slowly pile up on the gums. At first the wine seemed just dense and chewy, but slowly the tannins turn the wine quite noticeably grippy. The alcohol shows a little. The finish is powerful, noticeably tannic and quite textural with ripe yet bright and savory flavors of sour cherries, juicy strawberries, some gamey meaty tones, a little bit of sanguine iron, light herbal bitterness, a hint of gravelly minerality and a touch of tart lingonberry.
A very impressive, tightly-knit and still surprisingly youthful Taurasi with tons of ripe yet not particularly sweet primary fruit. The nose shows some sense of development with its slightly tertiary characteristics, but on the palate the wine feels still a baby. In comparison to the impressive vintage 2007 that was tasted alongside, this felt equally ripe yet slightly less sweet with more emphasis on the tightly-knit structure and concentrated, chewy character, making this wine feel even more serious and impressive. This is a very harmonious and thoroughly impressive Taurasi that is obviously built to last for ages. Extraordinary value at 29€.

Dry and bitter nose, liquorice flauvors on the palate, pleasantly savoury and offers dry fruitiness which is more attractive than the sweetness and ripe fruit of the -07, nicely balanced and drinking well now but will get better with age.

Tasting, brief note. An odd wine. Cassis and black cherry aromas with enticing spice aromas. Similar flavors but more restrained with somewhat drying tannins. At first I thought this needs time for the tannins to soften, but I fear the fruit might be gone by that time.

(Decanted for two hours) Deep red colour with a blue rim and a youthful nose showing sweet cherries, licorice and dried herbs. Palate still filled with lovely austere tannins that started to open up with decanting, but there is no rush opening these bottles for sure. Palate is filled with primary notes of red berries at first and with extended glass time starts to show more dried notes on the long lasting finish. This was very good with food, but is sure to reward further cellaring. (Probably best 2026-2046)

Decanted for an hour, drank over the next two. Gorgeous stuff. Red fruit, violets, tar, lots of spice, and just a hint of iodine. Ready to go now, but better with food. Without food, I would give it maybe another two or three years, but still enjoyable as we speak.
This will make lovely old bones, however, and those like me with the English taste will be well served by this bottle. So no hurries at all....you've got another dozen years to enjoy it.

Opened and served and observed over 40 minutes. Some evolution along the way but the wine has a quite dark, ripe and rich core of fruit, quite the sweet centre and lots of spice. Felt less pure more overripe than a year ago and we felt less inspired by it than last year (Papies 91). Not sure what to make of it tbh. 89-90 from us
Winewankers BYO; 11/11/2017-11/12/2017 (Torstein): Two years since the last bottle, but not much has happened. Complex nose with dark red fruit, spices and hints of prunes, blood and meat. Palate with tea leaves, heat and alcohol.

I really wanted to like this wine being a fan of the producer but alas it was not to be. Decanted about 90 minutes before drinking, Very nice aroma when I uncorked the wine but was a bit surprised that there was not a bit of sediment after 11 years. Thin, especially for an Aglianico. Weedy, flavor never showed up, very disappointing.

Foglie speziate, ciliege, frutta rossa. Ottimo vino, ottima cantina. Evviva il "barolo del sud".

Decanted for 90 minutes before tasting. Dark purple core, pink rim. Beautiful nose with hints of earthy strawberries, damp forest floor, raw mushrooms, leather, spices and a dash of vanilla. Tart red berries dominate on the medium bodied and currently somewhat tight palate, but there’s plenty of underlying stuffing that will surface once the structure subsides. Needs a few more years to come around (my best bottle of the 1999 vintage was consumed in 2014), but enjoyable even today if paired with a hearty meal (90-92 points).

SO'd for about 4 hours. Still a little closed but opening up after about 1 hour in the glass. Fascinating notes of ash, tar, smoke, cedar wood, tobacco, also red berries, later also some darker fruit and some leather. It's medium-bodied and surprisingly light on its feet, with high acidity adding a lot of tension and still medium+ tannin providing backbone. Long and beautiful finish with a lot of freshness. This still seems a little young... I might keep my remaining bottles for a few more years. It's a little lighter and less fruit-driven than some of the other vintages but what a fascinating wine with a beautiful sense of place. I am curious to see how this will show on day 2.

Thick dark berry fruits balanced by good grippy acidity. The texture is a bit gritty but the wine is full and dry and somewhat tannic on the finish with delicious flavors of black cherry, bitter chocolate, licorice and spices. Finishes dry but with good intensity and lots of acidity and some chalky minerals. Best with food due to the acidity. This really improved after 2 hours and needs more time in the cellar. 91+

An ice age elapsed after decanting before this bottle was ready to drink. Even at that, had a rustic, rough edge character. Maybe this will develop further with cellaring. Will try and wait a couple years before uncorking the next on.

Another sommelier recommendation based on a request for something like a searingly acidic, floral, earthy northern Italian. It was interesting. Apparently thickest skinned grapes in the world - incredibly fruit driven but with a nice skin-rather-than-oak tannic frame. It was oddly lighter in body than I expected - pleasantly so. I was taken with the meld of lifted floral (violets) and steeped red fruit. Really lingering woody spice effect in mid-palette.
Decanted 90 minutes (but it took more time to come together). Pale ruby wine with garnet rim. Intense notes of red flowers, sour cherry, dried strawberry, raspberry, tar, vanilla, balsamic, leather and a hint of smoke. Very lively acidity balanced by great fruit concentration, warming but not disturbing alcohol, and resolved high levels of tannins. Outstanding: great integration of primary, secondary, and tertiary aromas, nice freshness, and very long. Given how long it took to show in the glass, the crips acidity, and the high level of tannins I think the wine has a good 10-15 years of enjoyment ahead. Note: Guests called a nebbiolo from Piedmont.

This is a great pasta and meat tomato sauce wine. A bit young and certainly far from maturity, it has a great fruity lingering taste with an acidity bite to it. Good smoke and barrel aftertaste, it should be at it's peak in about 10 years . Certainly a surprise as for a 10nyear old wine is it very young... certainly happy I tried it , yet wish I would have kept it since I can only imagine what bit will be like in a few years.

Really enjoyed this and couldn't get a way from piedmont when served blind with the tomato paste, fennel, tar, rose & thorns and stemmy tannins. But it had a ripeness of fruit that kept telling me it was from somewhere else. Fun education.

Tasted double-blind. Smelled Italy and slowly eliminated Piemonte, then Tuscany, then southern Italy. Was not surprised on the reveal. Interesting wine, showing fairly significant oak treatment and still quite young. Dense substance, medium plus acid, medium tannins. At least five to seven years from maturity and it should show well through 2030. 92-93.

Certainly no better than my last bottle. Very thin, with just nothing going for it. Just so empty for an Aglianico that should be so much richer. I will not buy this producer again. Unfortunately, one more bottle in inventory to someday report on.
Still on the young side albeit approachable and not austere. Some more bottle age would definitely help it though. Great value of a wine, well made and with a nice purity. Bright and with good acidity, good fruit, light dark smoky side on the nose. Good palate presence and definitely with lots of life ahead of it. Very good. 91

A lovely new encounter, very clear, balanced and focused. Quite dark read with a slightly orange rim, get a nose of leather, tar, licorice strawberries and darker berries. Full on with tannins, acidity and 10 years and still tight and at least a few more year in the cellar would surly not hurt. Believe the fruit flavors will become more pronounced with time as well (now both red/dark berries), all in all a fantastic wine that I look forward to see develop over the years, Complex and depth.

Jeez. Another crappy Italian expensive wine. Is it me or the wines, but I feel like the Italian wines I keep buying are "shabeed" (which is dialect for "just plain flat.") There is just nothing to this wine. Very flat, little fruit, just plain non-descript.
Really needed plenty of air and food to show itself. Then a seamless texture with lovely classic flavors of black cherry with tobacco and dark spices. Finishes quite tight and tannic still but it's showing enough to tell that this is a great vintage for this wine and it should age gracefully. There is a lovely spice-driven complexity on the finish and the wine is very fine and elegant. 92+

Mint, eucalyptus, cinnamon, pine tree, and kitchen spices on the nose. Luscious, sandalwood palate, fantastic sparkling tannins. Some earth and funk is lying deep under the surface.

Tried this right after the non-riserva 2007 Taurasi Radici. The 2006 seemed quite a bit tighter and darker, with aromas of tar and liquorice. The palate is dry and the alcohol is medium at 13.5%. The acidity is medium (+) as are the tannins. The body is medium (+) as it the flavor intensity. The finish is long. This is a surprisingly youthful wine which can benefit from several more years of ageing. I am not even sure that it has entered its optimal drining window yet. I would definitedly decant it and pair it with food.

14% abv. Yields 35 l/ha. 30 months in a combination of French oak barrels and Slovenian botti, plus 42 months in bottle. Deep ruby. Ripe nose, balance of dried fruit, coffee, black cherry, toast, some complexity. Palate has beautiful texture, fresh high acidity, fine chalky finish, fruit carries through, long, high alcohol, but with the weight of fruit to support it. Cherry and toast flavours, rich and ripe, if a little dry. Very, very good wine. Would be outstanding if a little fresher on the palate. Has complexity, great depth, structure. Beautiful wine.

This flight probably was the most difficult to figure out blind as it showcased the potentially least familiar grape variety and region, but by ruling out Nebbiolo, Tannat and Sagrantino we got there.
The two things all three wines had in common were the good tannin/acidity structure and the remarkable length on the palate. The 1997 was my favourite wine of the flight. It was rather limited on the nose, but was the most balanced wine of the three, with tea and tobacco notes, medium-plus tannin, high acidity and tremendous length. The 1999 showed gamy notes on the nose and sweet fruit on the palate, with medium-plus tannin and acidity and very good length. It was the least enjoyable and my least favourite wine of the flight. The 2006 showed a lot of restrained power. It was the darkest wine of the bunch and almost sweet on the palate, with lots of oak, medium-plus tannin and acidity and very good length. It clearly needed more time in the cellar. All three wines screamed for food.

Dusty, white pepper, forest floor and wintergreen nose. Flavors of dry chalky stone and chewy blackberry. Tannins round out nicely. Lots of nice balance here.Very long chewy and substantial in the finish. Serious wine. Needs another 4-6 years.

Color: dark ruby
Nose: a certain barnyard note dissipates with time in the air, leaving room for a nice ripe plum fruit character, and a lot of tobacco. There is also a variegated support cast with rosemary, blood, chestnut, a hint of smoke making apparitions
Palate: very bright high acidity, medium-high tannins and a medium full body. Super fresh and light on its feet despite the age, thanks to the lively acidity. Confirms the nose with a prevalence.of th blue fruit
Finish: medium-long
Very nice food wine, needs about a hour and a half of air to show all it has to give. No rush to drink IMO. Prepare the steak!

Deep red colour with a blue rim and a youthful nose showing sweet cherries, licorice and dried herbs.

Foglie speziate, ciliege, frutta rossa. Ottimo vino, ottima cantina. Evviva il "barolo del sud".

Out of bottle was tannic and thin. Needs at least 45 minutes air at this time. After that, fruit emerged, tannins softened and wine came into nice balance.

Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of toasted oak, red cherry, sour cherry, spice, slight earth. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, fine high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of toasted oak, red cherry, sour cherry, spice, and a bit of earth. Long finish.
Very good quality. This is still tightly wound up at this point of time. Will improve with further ageing. Drink after another 3-4 years at least.

„One Wine - Three Vintages“-Blind Tasting. Flight 5: Mastroberardino Taurasi Radici Riserva. We tasted 1997, 1999 and 2006.
