Always complex, rich and toasty w notes of wood, citrus and spices. My sense is 10+ years would work magic on this wine so I’ll try to cellar the rest for a time.

Needed about 30 minutes to open. First glass was a bit tight and non de-script. But fear not, this wine blossomed and stretched its outstretched arms into a massive bear hug and loving embrace. Such glorious abundance.
What a treat. Can you tell I enjoyed it? As did the wife who has a very discerning palette especially when it comes to bubbles. In a great drinking window and may get smidge better over time but maybe not.
Balance has everything I look for with a great acid backbone to support long term aging and give it great lift. Bravo.

Enjoyed at Diegos belated birthday. What an absolute killer of a champagne. Incredible nose of brioche, white flowers, green apples, chalk and stone fruit. True purity. The mousse is really something special. Super mouthfeel. On the palate the wine shows impeccable balance. I suggest to open this 1-2 hours prior to serving as it got a lot better in the glass after 30 minutes or so.

Lovely champagne, enjoyed with the Barkers at Bosa in Bend. Totally a party in my mouth. Everything going on with this wine - precise, green apples, brioche. Just lovely. Agree with Collector1855 who said this champagne is perfect for the novice and advanced taster.

Un Repas en Cuisine - GD host (City Club FW - Chef's Table): Tasted single blind - so I knew it was champagne...gold in the glass, nice bubbles, big nose of green apple and fresh stone fruit. Amazingly fresh on the palate, with no oxidation. Big and creamy, integrated sweetness. Tried to back into it, as there was no oxidation, no saltiness, but good acid and a long finish. Tasted great. Called a 2006 top cuvee from a big house.

Pol Roger Sir Winston Churchill 2008. Ungdommelig stram kropp. Høy konsentrasjon og superb energi - vektløs intensitet. Sikkert lurt å lagre, men nytes stort. 95p

2008 top champagnes - horisontal wine tasting dinner (Rest MG (kg arr)): Second 2008 horisontal champagne half blind tasting dinner. First time June 2021. Back then the vintage was extremely youthful. How is it now? An almost unbelievable development in just 2 years. As a wine enthusiast I must simply surrender. I was skeptical about the drinkability at this point for this extreme vintage. That skepticism was proven wrong. 2008 can definitely be enjoyed now. For me, it's one of my really great tasting experiences. And there has certainly been many... Add to that, the vintage is only in its initial stage of maturation and therefore still youthful but extremely charming and open. I really look forward to tasting the 2008 vintage once a year in the coming many years experiencing the tertiary notes develop. Arpmas of ripe apple, lemon but also a little overripe apple, bread dough. Creamy mousse

2008 Champagne - 25 top names tasted blind: O boy, what a showy wine. Richer, riper, denser than the DP next to it. Cinnamon, red and green apples, almost indecently seductive. Generous palate, a more of everything style, like a Bérêche Pinot with increased dosage. Really great both for a novice and advanced palate.

Wow, This is the fourth time I taste 2008. Now we are talking. What a development since last time (2 years ago). I am really surprised. Pale gold colour. Ripe apple, lemon, lots of autolysis and breaddough and beginning nutty tertiary notes. Perfect balance and a good finish. I love it. Looking forward to the coming years. Going to open at least one per year. 96++

Weirdly cheesy nose. No bubbles/mousse? Bit of treacle on the nose. Rich, sweet palate but lifeless without the mousse or acidity to lift it. Hopefully, not a representative bottle.
Opened in Hong Kong. Slow-oxed for a while after popping and then enjoyed blind.
Fantastic Champagne - really yeasty and toasty on the nose but going down with great freshness and acidity, without going down too sharply. Long finish and enjoayble aftertaste in the mouth. Just a really well-put together champagne and arguably the best wine of the line-up on this occasion.

Had the pleasure of sharing this Kevin's ( rocknroller) btl at perhaps the best concert of my life. Graham Nash in the 350 person Dakota Jazz Club locally. Huge thanks to Graham for choosing an intimate setting for his 4 nights in Minneapolis this week. BTW, he offered an emotionally scorching version of Neil Youngs "Country Girl (I think you're Pretty)." Who says acoustic music can't rock! What a night. All while enjoying this magnificent 08 Sir Winston Churchill to boot. WTF! Kevin's note below beautifully details the 08. This wine took no prisoners. So balanced, intense & complex. Just an amazing wine fitting of an amazing night of some of the best songs ever written & preformed! Graham was so giving and engaging! Bravo!

Light gold color. Split bottle over 3.5 hours. Ths bottle was full on stunning. It captured you from the first wafts of the amazing nose. The intensity on the nose hits you first with waves of sea air, so fresh and alive; brioche, fresh baking bread, bright pear, floral notes, wispy, apple, and dry stones. The palate is riveting, immense depth, power, bright orchard fruits, pear, red apple, ginger, spiced apple, baked apricot, invigorating crystalline minerality, sweet dulce de leche, great acidity, and impressive length. Wow, this is the whole package. A great compliment to our evening of Graham Nash and his soulful songs in the most intimate of venues. 97+ to 98pts.
One of my favorite champagnes ever. I must say that this particular bottle felt that it may have gone through some temperature extremes. Serious and autolytic while retaining great freshness and acidity. One member of the table blinded this to 02.
No fault on the nose but the effervescence was gone within 20 minutes. At least for my bottles I suggest drinking within the next 5 years; unclear how representative this bottle was.

Very tight in the beginning, and not very generous. After a while, more aromas of autolysis, minerals, fresh baked bread and nuts. Still quite tight after several hours in the glass, now with additional aromas of sweet candies. Promising and in need of cellaring.

Incredible Champagne. A great Champagne from a great vintage is still in the middle of its aging process after 15 years. Three hours after being uncorked, the flavors continue to change without withering. The palate changes from sharp to honey, coarse sugar, green apple and apple nectar, cherry, and whiskey/sherry. Wooden nuances like forest, slight bruoch aroma, and a sense of broth like drinking a pale consommé soup. The vast amount of information transmitted from this Champagne is too much for my small capacity to take in. Combined with the euphoric sensation that the Champagne gives me, my emotions are shaken. What is the essence of this Champagne?

'Le Lievre a la Royale' Long Lunch (cafe EPURE, Shop 403, inside Epure, Level 4, Ocean Centre, Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong): Drank as a second aperitif to follow a 2002 Francoise Bedel L'Ame de la Terre. Muted mousse but very lively tiny bubbles in copious, persistent streams bursting with visual energy. Light yellow gold. Nose is high piano notes ozone and sea breeze with yellow meadow flowers. Palate is REALLY scintillating, petillante mouthfeel, chalky, really lively and refreshing. Too young to demonstrate the signature Winston Churchill weight. Very satisfying and has a hugely long life ahead of it to mature and improve. 94+. Thanks, Hans!

High acid, high intensity in the style of the vintage and very similar to the great '96. There is a deep core of slightly oxidized yellow fruits and plenty of yeasty mineral notes. Complex and grippy on the intense finish and this should develop nicely over the coming years. 93+

Had a number of top end 2008 Champagnes now, and for me this was up with the best of them. Florals, citrus fruit and rind, golden delicious apple, freshly cooked bread. Beautiful, zingy, refreshing acid that drives the dense flavours long. Just love the line and purity of this wine, and those fine beads are a thing of beauty. Great drinking now but will obviously live a long time.

Angerville spring break (Alex): Straw golden. Looks young. Delicate nose with sweet fruit, tart berries, cream, and dairy. Initially, the palate is perceived as somewhat restrained. Eventually, the wine opens up considerably and becomes complex with spices, meat, and floral flavors. The wine has a gravelly minerality and the finish is long with sweet baked Amalfi lemons.

Tasted double blind. This is my first WC from Pol Roger and it showed great. A beautiful, seductive aroma profile is met by an impeccable structural frame with everything that is needed to develop into an exceptional Champagne with more time in the cellar. Today it doesn’t have the creaminess and softness but is already there in terms of complexity. Very, very promising. 95 pts today, with potential to reach the 97+ pts category.
TN: Medium expressive on the nose. At first not very well defined. But with more time, it opened up and got more precise: lime, citrus and some brioche and butter notes. More intense by the minute. Right from the go much better on the palate with more expression and concentration with a strong core of brioche, butter and some nutty notes, citrus and lime notes and a streak of red berry notes underneath. Better delineated than on the nose. The structure is impeccable with a fine mousse and a high but relatively round acidity. For me, this hits the right balance between being a seductive, autolysis-driven Champagne with enough vinous elements and depth.
Decanting: This needed some time to come out of its shell. I would let it breath in the glass or give it a quick decant in a Champagne decanter.
crisp nose with butter and yeast and some citric aromas, good balance on the palate not too aggressive perlage, good acidity and overall good balance and structure. we had fun with this bottle.
ready to drink now, but can also hold for another decade at least.

Nebbiolo and White Truffles (Matt's, Portland OR): This is clearly on the young side, but opened up quickly and showed off deep and refined tones of red apples, peach blossoms, pears, meyer lemons, quince, baking spices, toast, biscuits, yellow flowers, brioche, and vanilla beans. The Medium bodied feel has a lot of depth and richness with sharp, high acidity. The acidity shows off the youth and has a bit of sting. Beneath that was a well defined and balanced feel that leaned into a lengthy finish. This will be a long-distance runner as there is so much here already.

Champagne & Sparklers (Calistoga): Prickly pear and Meyer lemon succulence play off each other to deliver a Champagne that is both jubilant and profound. This is a creature that performs very well at the front and mid-points of entry. There is a slight alkaline flavor on the back end that takes a bit away from the full flutter of fulfillment. But aside from a somewhat barbed tail, the Churchill brings distinguishment with a smile. I was drawn to the bristly energy more than some others who wanted for some next-level seamlessness that the finish seems to struggle to achieve. I didn’t find it so spikey that it was that distracting. Perhaps a Champagne to hold for a few years to see if it finds an even better sense of completeness and varnish. 94-95+ points.

2008 top champagnes - horisontal wine tasting dinner (Rest PG (kg arr)): For me Winston Churchill was - together with Dom Perignon and Cristal´08 - the horisontal 2008 tasting's no. 3. Return to Trompette (La Trompette): Another excellent bottle of this wine. Not particularly fizzy. At first the nose was very bright and fumy, but after a while that blew off and it broadened out to become more luxurious. Excellent energy on the palate, still citrus fruit-dominated but with a balancing touch of cream, and a tangy, fresh finish that lingered deliciously.

This is the clear winner in my book of the 2008 champagne showdown. IMHO edges out cristal and dom and so much more to give with bottle age. I recommend. Bigger glasses to let it breathe or give it 5 more years.

Picked from the list - and what a treat. Intense, deep with immense concentration yet a light elegance and persistance, that is hard to resist. Very hard indeed. Butter, citrus, minerals, some mushrooms. Thanks, LB, for serving this. #videopodcast#FrederiksHave
Pheromonal champagne and among the best I have had. In my opinion also better than the Cristal 08 and Dom Perignon 08. Crisp, great balance, drinking beautifully right now. Just bought another case.

Bright, mid gold with very fine beading. Nose: powerful, intense, complex and expressive. At first I got mineral and slate notes, some butter and marzipan, nuts and a subtle yeasty character. This opened up to white peaches, bread, citrus and honey. The freshness became more apparent. Palate: unsurprisingly it is dry, with a rich texture and a full body. It is precise and intense, complementing the power. Acidity is restrained. The finish is long and lingering. It needs more time.

Pale gold with remarkably fine and persistent bubbles. Great complexity and length of finish. Fresh acidity balanced with tropical fruit and also toast / hazelnut characteristics. Absolutely delicious and the flavours grew and developed as the wine warmed slightly in the glass. Bright and fresh now and offering superb potential for future ageing.

Nice, well structured, clean, flavorful, etc etc etc, but didn’t knock my socks off. None of the 08s I’ve opened in the last couple years really have, and all in the same way — perfect but a bit boring and closed. I suppose they need more time in the cellar but I’m starting to wonder if 08 is as great as they say.

Always good to fall back on Pol Roger, a house that never disappoints. This is showing solid age with a golden pour and lots of tertiary aromas pounding out of the glass. The palate is still bright, but shows big richness of fruit complemented by a thick, creamy mousse. Bubbles, even though fine as a razor, remain persistent throughout. Definitely a food Champagne.

Big, broard and expansive like Sir Winston himself. There's a creamy texture to this and a fresh finish which is a combination I really like but unfortunately there's also that faintest hint of wet wool/cardboard that I really can't bear in Champagne. I find it so often in champagne that it must be there deliberately - they can't all be bad bottles after all -so maybe I'm just oversensitive to it.
Anyway, a big powerful champagne (if you like that sort of thing) that is drinking well right now and is certainly ready to go. But is this worth 3x the price of the 2008 vintage bottling? In a word, no.
Consistent with a few month ago when we had this last ( Papies 92) and once again we had the same comment.. a super cuvee that usually fails us but definitely performs better younger and brighter. Still this is no lean champagne and is full and with a yeasty rich profile. Another 92 from us.

Young and bright and true to its style , richer and fuller very much “English Style” of champagne , toasty and yeasty. We are not the biggest fans of this cuvée we have to say but maybe it’s more our style when it’s younger and more energetic. Def very solid wine and with lots of life ahead of it but for us is better at this stage. 92

The recently released 2008 Pol Roger Sir Winston Churchill is young and nervy, more elegant and refined than the muscular 2006, and more energetic than 2004. Tasted blind - Rich and energetic array of white orchard fruits, refreshing lemons and green apples with good dose of raspberries (Pinot Noir?). Fresh autolytic note of brioche, yeasty toast. A hint of white peppery nose that reminds me of Jérôme Prévost Champagnes. Jérôme Prévost? 2015? (92/100)

Bday Ultraviolet#1. Medium gold color. Medium pungent nose of fermented green and stone fruits. Dry, high acidity, medium taste of lemon, green apple, pear, toast. Medium body and chalky finish. Fascinating nose, good taste.
Gareth's blind 2008 Grand Marques (Chez Bruce): Tasted blind. I don't normally much like Pol Roger, so this was a nice surprise. Very clean, crisp and taut, in a lively and impressive rather than reticent or overly proper fashion. Had a lovely drive to it, which held up as the wine warmed in the glass. Seemed ready to enjoy.

Green apple, honey, ginger, biscuit and limestone. Still tightly wounded but it had the richness and acidity to show its promising future. While the 08 Churchill is a delicious champagne, the 08 Pol Roger Brut magnum probably offers higher wow factor for its level and price. I would rate Cristal over Dom over Churchill for this vintage.

Marchand & Tawse / Pascal Marchand Dinner (Chloe, DC): Expressive nose displaying succulent rich yellow fruit, apple, apple pie, pear, ginger candy, cinnamon, biscuit and limestone. Excellent concentration, nicely layered rich yellow fruit, very fine generous mousse, deeply tone yet energetic, bright acidity and strong limestone mineral and a long concentrated yellow fruit driven finish. I typically find this cuvee to be very serious and complex and this is no exception. Already drinking beautifully. My only complain is that this is too serious where the 08 Dom and Cristal are almost playful.

Young Marchand-Tawse Wine Dinner: Rich and complex already with an intriguing sense of apple, berry and pear on nose and palate. Lush start, reserved middle, then texturally complex finish with so many hints of nuance. Great now, but really just foreshadowing this wine’s 93-94 point potential.

Nice champagne, but still very young. Tightly coiled even with 30 mins of air. On the nose mix of honey, brioche and green apple. Finishes richly and stays on the palate for 15-30 seconds. Probably a touch sweeter/less oxidative than I would like.

Drinking absolutely beautiful right now. Just give it half an hour after opening. Perfect soft acidity fruit balance. Lots of ripe yellow fruits and some greenish notes too, nice deep structure. The relationship with the regular PR 08 is clear - But here everything (intensity, structure, acidity) is turned up a couple of notches. Still somewhat reductive with a little gunsmoke on top of the fruit, which was fairly yellow/green rather than the red apples from the Bollinger. Similar quality, but the Bollinger was more open for business. 94+.

Clearly very good but I yearned for even more intensity and concentration. Still, there’s excellent energy and nascent complexity with a touch of baking bread. Nicely balanced, too. Slightly hollow in the middle, will it fill out or drop out in the years to come?

Kind of holding back a bit on the nose, mouth is flavorful, some caramel, saline components, gave me an impression of concentrated BdB but it's mostly PN from what I'm told. Bubbles died out rather quickly. This was good, but overrated IMHO, at least at this tasting. I believe it was probably opened previously which may explain the short effervescence. At the estate with Pierre and Elise. 91-92

Bubblorna höll sådär men doften, vilken doft!

light bright champagne color, lovely pear and apple tones on the nose, on the palate open and elegant with a very fine white mousse, good length, over time it opened admirably showing moderate body and some light bread notes on the nose, on the mid-palate there is a young and concentrated core of orchard and citrus fruits that shows the muscle of the vintage but is also a bit sweeter than expected and not quite to my tastes, as with the 2008 vintage Pol Roger this is a very good wine but I have a sense that the powerful and- for my palate- overly sweet core may cost it some subtle expressiveness in time, by any standard this is an impressive champagne, but I personally prefer the 2004 and given the greatness of 2008 at so many addresses this is not quite as convincing at this time as I had anticipated.

Grand Designs Reveal Week - Dinner #2 (Wedge House, Queensberry, Central Otago, New Zealand): Finest Champagne I've drunk in at the past few years! The essence of refinement in the pol Style, with plenty of Pinot weight. Gorgeous Brioche nose, tiny bubbles with froth effervesnce. A touch deeper than medium gold; quite a white flowers/floral note, savoury complex development, autolytic notes; quite deliciously dry character on the front palate, complex mineral character. A little tight versus the DP tasted earlier. Very dry on the finish. Stronger biscuit and autolytic patisserie on the nose on returning to the glass. Exceedingly precise and focused. Not the length of the DP yet but that could come.

2008 Champagne horizontal (Medlar (London)): Served a bit too cold and it was tough to get a read on at first served blind. Certainly a step up after the Legras Vincent 08 alongside. Guessed pinot dominated, this was oxidative and at times showed some crystalline beauty. BYOB "High Altitude" (Sollentuna, Sweden): Chalky, yeast, yellow apples, very distinct acidity attack, dry, a bit short, grapefruit. A very good champagne that feels too young at this stage.

Intense and surprisingly aromatic with pretty ripe citrus, yellow very freshe flowers, brioche, nuts, autolysis and with very nice salts.
Very rich and deep Champagne. Youthful citrus fruits and yellow apples with nice accidity. A little cramped, but is filled to the verge of all the necessary components. Fantastic long finish with lovely salty finish. What energy in the end! Champagne for the next 20-30 years. Great Sir Winston!

Bravo.

Høy konsentrasjon og superb energi - vektløs intensitet.
Sikkert lurt å lagre, men nytes stort.

Fantastic Champagne - really yeasty and toasty on the nose but going down with great freshness and acidity, without going down too sharply. Long finish and enjoayble aftertaste in the mouth. Just a really well-put together champagne and arguably the best wine of the line-up on this occasion.

Muted mousse but very lively tiny bubbles in copious, persistent streams bursting with visual energy. Light yellow gold. Nose is high piano notes ozone and sea breeze with yellow meadow flowers. Palate is REALLY scintillating, petillante mouthfeel, chalky, really lively and refreshing. Too young to demonstrate the signature Winston Churchill weight. Very satisfying and has a hugely long life ahead of it to mature and improve. 94+. Thanks, Hans!

This opened up to white peaches, bread, citrus and honey. The freshness became more apparent. Palate: unsurprisingly it is dry, with a rich texture and a full body. It is precise and intense, complementing the power. Acidity is restrained. The finish is long and lingering. It needs more time.

2015? (92/100)

This one has the firm structure of 2008, bright acidity. It is still tight. It needs a few years in the bottle, however it is already drinkable if it needs be.

I guessed Big house, Prestige cuvee and 2008. Some mint Chocolate , delikate, powerful, brioche and red red berries. Still very young and balanced. Could be a Bit more accessible from the acidity Sidebar. Fort the next 20 years. 95+

Really good from the start, lemon, yellow apple, pear, brioche, bread/yeast, great intensity but not over the top even at this young age with absolute perfect balance.

Yeast and brioche. Mousy smooth on the palate. Easy to pick out blind as Winston Churchill. Tastes like an NV but costs way more. Overrated as always.

Gorgeous wine with a nose that bursts from the glass with fresh orange peel, and lemon rind. Freshly baked, yeasty bread with a touch of saline.
Palate is expansive and shows so much precision and liveliness on the finish. Killer wine. Such a long life ahead.

Drinking absolutely beautiful right now. Just give it half an hour after opening. Perfect soft acidity fruit balance. Lots of ripe yellow fruits and some greenish notes too, nice deep structure. Sure this is young and it will probably get more interesting with some more time, but there is no reason to wait in my opinion. Great stuff!

Christmas Party (Chez Michelis): The wine is very impressive in the nose, high intensity, decadent, creamy and oaky, citrus, stone fruit, earthy.
The wine shows medium to high acidity, citrus, lemon, bright and impressive length, its still very fresh.
First time trying this wine but damn its outstanding quality.

Had right after the 02 Bollinger RD.

Joseph Drouhin Dinner (Medlar (London)): Showing consistently with impression from a few months back albeit it a bit more open and this time had the chance to sample it at right temperature as last time was served too cold initially. This is really nice now already but should prove to be a very interesting champagne ten years down the line.

8/16/2019 - Elpaninaro Likes this wine:
light bright champagne color, lovely pear and apple tones on the nose, on the palate open and elegant with a very fine white mousse, good length, over time it opened admirably showing moderate body and some light bread notes on the nose, on the mid-palate there is a young and concentrated core of orchard and citrus fruits that shows the muscle of the vintage but is also a bit sweeter than expected and not quite to my tastes, as with the 2008 vintage Pol Roger this is a very good wine but I have a sense that the powerful and- for my palate- overly sweet core may cost it some subtle expressiveness in time, by any standard this is an impressive champagne, but I personally prefer the 2004 and given the greatness of 2008 at so many addresses this is not quite as convincing at this time as I had anticipated.

The essence of refinement in the pol Style, with plenty of Pinot weight. Gorgeous Brioche nose, tiny bubbles with froth effervesnce. In the mouth, all refinement, very fresh, but clearly a wine with aged character that hints at even greater things to come. Superb modulated and leghthy finish.

It was a good showing but myself and others were a bit underwhelmed when it was revealed as the Winston Churchill. The Dom served alongside was clearly better...
