1990 Pétrus

Community Tasting Notes

Community Tasting Notes (60) Avg Score: 96.5 points

  • Dried roses, tobacco, red cherries, plums, blue fruits, spice, smoke truffles, and chocolate create the attention-seeking perfume. The palate is exotic, supple, and sensuous, with layers of ripe, spicy plums, cherries, smoke, and chocolate. The wine is long, opulent, rich, and most importantly, unique in character. It’s also still young and vibrant. Drink from 2024-2050.

  • R generously brought this to share when the theme was “casual”. We’ll take casual as it is.

Pop and pour for taste before a 1.5 hour decant. Soaring bouquet at the start. You just look at each other, nod and smile type of nose. Fresh roses, strawberries, fresh cigar, lightly spiced, bell peppers. Just a ton of volume and wholesomeness to be found. After 2 hours in decanter, mushrooms, turns abit deeper and darker, more serious and with more perceiveable structure. I preferred it before the decant tbh but the aromatics on this man. It’s just wild.

  • A superb exemplar of Pétrus, the 1990 is bold, voluptuous, massively fruity and yet somehow well balanced. Surely at peak now. Luscious but with no resemblance to some of those over-the-top California fruit bombs. Easy to drink but you need to pay attention if you want to understand all that it wants to tell you.

  • Decadently rich yet balanced black fruit palate. This bottle is quieter than the best examples but still pretty darn good.

  • Pétrus dinner (Restaurant Sinck, Amsterdam, NL): Double decanted (briefly). Perfect condition, from an unopened case purchased en primeur. Mint. Warm and ripe but fresh and flowing, fully mature, the bouquet is the right bank equivalent of the nose of Haut-Brion 1989, perfect harmony and balance, perfectly at ease with itself, rich but effortlessly elegant, sweet and gentle but firm and lively, flowers and crushed red berries, hint of white truffle, long and dreamy finish. Words of mine cannot do it justice. Dances away into the night.

  • Leisner jubilæums dinner (Søllerød Kro): Double magnum: Aromas of red fruit, cherry, cedar, smoke. Palate: High acidity, medium tannin, pronounced intensity and long finish. A little jammy for my taste. 93+

  • Decanted for 4 hours before serving. It is feminine and elegant with weightless power. Very penetrating. Palate is better than the nose. Unfortunately it is outshined by the magnificent 90 Le Pin.

  • Nase intensiv, Dörrobst, süß. Frucht setzt sich am Gaumen fort, vollmundig, üppig, mit langen Abgang. Fantastischer Wein, immer noch mit jugendlicher Frische.

  • 48x 1990 (37x Bdx, 6x Napa, 5x others): A fabulous quartet of 1990 Pomerols side by side showed incredibly strong. With a lot of typicality, these wines are so sensual and hedonistic and at the same time very elegant. Winner was a complex and complete Petrus (96 pts), a touch ahead of the intense and still young Lafleur (95 pts) and nicely matured, complex Evangile (95 pts). The Trotanoy (93 pts) was a tad weaker as it showed less substance compared to the others. I’m sure, following these wines over an evening would have been great and the scores would be higher. All 4 wines were a bit shy on the nose and only started singing with additional time in the glass and swirling.

TN: Rather muted nose. Dark fruits and minerality but not very precise and open. On the palate this shines very bright with an absolute Merlot weightlessness, super finesse, completely melted tannins, hardly noticeable but medium+ freshness, so balanced and round nose. The sweet fruit is perfect, so much sexy Bordeaux chocolate aromas. This is hedonistic but still so elegant. This is 96+ pts, it would be 97+ if it wouldn‘t be for the nose. I would have love to drink that with a few hours in the decanter. So much potential.

Decanting: Quick double decant three+ hours prior to the tasting to remove sediment. This would have needed more time in the decanter. 2-3 hours at least.

  • Drunk in a michelin star restaurant, in the south of France. Bought en primeur and stored in the same cellar for 30 years. Lovely nose, with hints of brett though. Scents of forest, leather, fur and hay, as well as liquorice, smoke and truffle. Very elegant mouthfeel, rounded and coated with smooth and refined tanins, very balanced and focused. Long, rich and complex. To be fair I was expecting a little more from such a legendary wine, but it was nevertheless objectively delicious.

  • Another bottle, better condition, airy, complex, spicy, thick. Bold and elegant, somewhat faultless. 95-98

  • Less nose than palate. Super good balance, practically no problems, just conditionally not very expressive. Light, balanced, intense, classic on the palate. 93-97

  • The depth of color, flavor, intensity and levels of richness hit all the right notes. Here you find layers of black plums, blacker cherries, smoke, truffle, dark, bitter chocolate, earth, and flowers that arrive in velvety-textured waves that coat your palate with staying power. The sensuous over 50-second finish seals the deals with its velvet textures.

  • Served double blind along side the 71 Haut Brion, the 1996 DRC La Tache, and 1990 Le Pin… this was a deep, dark wine with a concentrated palate and a plum and tar nose. Sensational depth and power, this is just ridiculously young and primary next to its resolved neighbor. More palate than bouquet at present. Superb but needs 10+ years to really hit its stride. 95+ pts.

  • Touch of wood initially which does blow off and eventually antiseptic. Enormously rich, hedonistic, black fruit palate.

  • Wow, this is just incredible. So deep, massive, rich and opulent yet also quite elegant and pretty. Beautiful aromatics and mouthfeel. This is the real deal and as good as it gets as far as I'm concerned.

  • At first the nose here is quiet and subdued, and generally remained that way thourghout the evening, especially in direct comparison to ’90 Cheval Blanc and to a lesser extent a ’90 Haut Brion. Darker red and black fruit still, not necessarily tight but very dense. This doesn’t show especially ripe either. Far more nuanced, detailed, and subtle than I was expecting. I’d say that the magic of the Petrus is past the nose and on the palate where it shows an incredible density but with soft edges and silky tannin. A special soft texture. Chocolatey, chocolate covered cherries similar to the ’89 Le Pin a few days ago. More intellectual than expected as it doesn’t get in your face at all the way the highly expressive and showy Cheval does. A little darker than I was expecting too but very fresh and there is clearly a lot of runway ahead for clean bottles of this.

  • Medium ruby, thick legs, with some edge fading and browning. Deep florals, grass, and ripe red cherry aromas, and a hint of cinnamon and Chinese herbs. Strong tannins, coupled with dark floral and ripe cranberry flavours, pepper and paprika spices, mint, and a hint of tar and graphite, which grows stronger as it progresses to the finish, which is indeed minute-long, and still having the ripe fruit flavours along. As expected, a really great wine!

  • Sweet and saccharine nose, though not too intense. Body is concentrated with intensity. Dark fruits dominate, and v good length.

  • If any Bordeaux could stand up to the Burgundy purists it would be Petrus in my book! Liquid velvet and in Hemingway’s words liquid poetry. The purity of the dark red fruits is astounding and the structure of the wine outstanding. Cork fully soaked, fragrant with perfumed dark red fruits, plums and raspberries. Pristine bottle, which I stood up few hours before opening. Some sediments but not too much. Decanted and aerated for 3 hours and drank over two hours over dinner. Deep ruby red color, on the palate very coating and velvety, didn’t get a feel of the truffles just dark red perfumed fruits as I have never tasted. Finishes very long, pure, tannins fully integrated for a medium to full bodied wine.

  • Monumental wine. Pairing tremendous but velvety power with elegance and freshness. Effortless balance. Just entering its drinking window with a firm promise of decades of hedonistic drinking pleasure ahead. Don't try to analyze this wine, just enjoy, it's phenomenal...

  • Flowers, smoke, earth, powdered chocolate, black cherry, plum and truffle pop in the nose. Full-bodied, opulent, concentrated and complex, the wine has density and lift coupled with a basket of just-picked cherries leaving you with a decadent palate presence. While this is entering its plateau of maturity, it will be even better in 5-10 years. It is interesting to note that this is the fifth time I've tasted the wine over the past 11 years, and each time my score has popped up a point.

  • The P Wine (Bourbon Steak, Aventura, Florida): Another splendid vintage for Pétrus, the 1990 is ripe and deep. Nevertheless the tannins are slightly dry so it’s not quite one of those near perfect experiences. Excellent rambunctious fruit though makes you want to stop picking nits and just knock it back and wallow in its deliciousness.

  • This is not a wine I see often, for obvious reasons. Frankly, it has not been the most consistent performer with scores ranging from 94-97. But this bottle was a show-stopper! Rich, generous, pure and opulent, as well as youthful, the floral, truffle, plum, cherry and wet earth nose rocked. But the palate stole your focus with its multiple layers of fruit, dark chocolate and surreal velvet drenched textures. What a thrill to experience.

  • Wine Monuments Man Chapter 4 (Berens am Kai 1 star Restaurant): Not blind
Feels more accessible than 1 year ago. 3 hours of decantation. Generous, opulent red berries, plum and violet. Too young but with very powerful and lots of concentration. I preferred the other two reds today. 96+

  • An Epic Vertical of Petrus (Ten Trinity Latour Club, London): A gorgeous mature nose. Starts with loads of dark chocolate and then gives way to cigar box and smoke flavors. This has layers of depth and complexity. Impossible to put down.

  • Continuing with another huge misconception of the wine industry - Merlot. After Sideways, many people started hating on this grape simply because of one sentence that sounded cool in a movie. A true shame, because tasting a Merlot from Petrus is a rare treat and honor. A few reasons why this is one of the most expensive wines in the world: a) only 2,500 cases produced annually b) the vineyard is 11.5 ha with soils that are 10 million years old c) the winemakers take better care of it than they would of their newborns.

Deep garnet in the glass. A heavy tertiary nose displaying everything from dried fruit to tobacco and forest floor. When people taste a wine like this they expect it to have an eternal lifespan with bright fruit bursting out of the bottle every time a new one is opened. In most cases (accent on "most"), you can't expect that from a 28-year-old wine. But this doesn't mean the palate can't offer a sensational breath of life. Medium-bodied and enjoyably rich, offering moderate grip. Fairly resolved tannins with the structure relying mostly on the crisp acidity than on anything else. Notes of wizened black cherries, old wood, crushed gravel, raisins and hints of meat consommé. The flavors will not develop further, but this has some fuel to hold up for another 10-15 years easily. After this whole experience, my main complaint (and concern) is the surprisingly short finish this offers. Caught me by surprise to say the least.

  • Small and simple dinner gathering with some special friends, no formal notes.
The bottle (actually all Bdx. we drunk tonight) had been open for approx. 4 hours.
Nose is delish, smoke, black fruits, blackberries, cherries, blueberries, truffles, cocoa, chocolate, wet soil and tobacco leafs.
Palate is equally fantastic, fully packed with ripe creamy black and lush fruits, plums, blackberries, blueberries, dark cherries, luxurious chocolate, coffee.
    Creamy, silky, round and rich.
Just as the Cheval Blanc, this seemed much younger than its age, even more so than the Cheval Blanc.
A great Petrus and a real treat.

  • Powerful, intense, concentrated, rich, deep and long, at close to 30 years of age, this is still youthful. The ripe, deep plummy fruit, earth, truffle and floral notes are further complicated by the sensation of wet clay. There is a lot of potential here, but I wonder if all that is hoped for will ever find its way to the surface. Served double blind with the 1989 Petrus, the 1990 came in second place.

  • The Fifteenth Annual Stonefields Wine Tasting Dinner for Charity (Guelph, Ontario, Canada): Tasted on first pour this was unreal and likely warranted a much higher score. I only had a small taste but was not able to write a note. Only thing I scratched in my book was "unbelievable"
6 hours later, after this wine had been double decanted and put in a wine fridge for the intervening period I thought it had lost a bit of its verve. When I got to writing a note later on this wine is was still utterly stupendous...just a little weaker than on initial pour.
Nose showed bitter chocolate, plum, flowers, cherry, earth, moss and pyrazene. Palate had such pure fruit....utter cashmere. Cherry, raspberry, spice, flowers earth, moss and a myriad of other flavours dance on the palate.
Finish is long and layered....a legend.

  • 66x Parker 100-Pointers from Bordeaux 1947-2010 tasted blind (Switzerland): Tasted blind. Medium garnet. Nose of dark fruit, some woody and foresty notes, not very interesting. On the palate the wine is well aged and pleasant but also a bit flat, lacking Energy. Quite southern aromatics. May be this bottle was past its prime. Anyway, 94 points tonight. Group score: 17.00, group rank: 43/64

  • 1989 vs. 1990 Bordeaux (Vaucluse): 89 vs 90 tasting. This was the first Petrus I ever tried but unfortunately it was a bit of a let-down. This came after a long night with many phenomenal left bank wines preceding the Petrus and Angelus so probably not a very fair comparison. Would love to try this on its own some time. That being said, I preferred the 90 over the 89 again. Stewed red berry flavors and complex aroma in a full bodied round package.

  • Library Tasting with Geoff Kelly - 1990s - in memory of Ken Kirkpatrick (Regional Wines and Spirits, Wellington, New Zealand): Dense and mature hue. Nose of lifted berry fruit, candy cane spice and a touch of eucalypt. In the mouth, really tasty and fat, with nice balance. Textbook large scaled Bordeaux with plenty of grip, spine and thick fruit. Broad and structured and still some way away from its full apogee of maturity and resolution. A hint of the savory buttered popcorn note I often sense in great vintages of Petrus. While tonight, this wine was overshadowed by Angelus and Pichon Baron, this has breed and will improve. 94+

  • This is a massive wine and I would not guess the age based upon the nose. Heavy wood aromas almost initially masking much of the dark fruit. White pepper present but more noticeable after a six hour decant. Smooth tannins (but a lot of them) mesh with plum and dark cherry. Enjoyable now but best to hide it away for a while.

  • The showy nose grabs you with its fresh, pure black cherry notes, earth, plum, floral, blueberry, plum, brown sugar and cocoa aromatics. With the texture of polished silk, soft, refined tannins and lush, sensuous textures, this is a sublime tasting experience. Now, if only I could afford a bottle....

  • A Great French Dinner (Indianapolis, IN): Distinctly different nose, but not one that I would have guessed 95+ percent merlot. A little tight at first, but fills the mouth with a luxurious mouthfeel. Dark cherry/cassis/blueberry fruit. It is an opulent wine, and will last longer than anyone reading this note.

  • Drank alongside the 1989...

Seems to have 2 notches more power and stuffing that the 1989, making it too young yet. Huge tannins present, even at this age.

In time, it should pass up the 1989 perfectness, and I suspect becoming more complex that the 89, but not now. Lacks the polish and refinement of the prior vintage and needs taming by the gentle hands of time.

  • A marauding maroon; brooding, tannic, rich, concentrated, multi-layered and multi-faceted, with tobacco, plums, dark fruits and dark chocolate notes. Fine texture, with a lot of density on the mid-palate and a long finish. This needs at least another ten, probably 15, years before it is ready to drink and will last for several decades. A bit more closed down now than it was in the first ten years of its life, it is destined to become a great Petrus.

  • Sweet vanilla, creme, brambly blackberry and chocolate on the nose. In the mouth, Layered plum, sweet grape, blackerry, more stone fruit, than berry. Tight, but developing coffee cedar and pencil lead. Tannins are soft but huge, pure velvet. I am not sure i have ever had such a powerful wine, that is so well balanced, and so drinkable. Overwhelming sense of balance, each component is beautiful, but will open and be even more luxurious. . Tight, focused, but precise, long, lasts forever. Quintessential 1990 bright fruit. It is a rare night that I have a La Tache (we did, side by side), thatnitmdoes not finish first, but tonight was the night, the Petrus blew it away. One of my top 10 wines of all time!

  • Dinner at Doyle & Lesley's (Vancouver, BC): Dark ruby colour (looked like a barrel sample). Not only did this look incredibly youthful, it smelt and tasted like a barrel sample. Nose was fairly pronounced with ripe, rich and dark plums, berries, blackberries and hints of cedar and chocolate. There was also some alcohol coming through on the nose. On the palate this was enormous: full bodied, rich, opulent and intense with palate staining blackberry, plum and tobacco flavours. There’s adequate acidity with round and dense tannins and the finish is extremely long. The mouthfeel is velvety and rich but doesn’t come across heavy or overblown even though there isn’t a ton of acid. I’d say this wine is at least 10 years away from primetime drinking but getting to taste it today was a real treat. It’s hard for me to evaluate this as it’s clearly an exceptional bottle of Bordeaux but so much of its greatness has yet to come. I can see this being in the mid to high 90s one day, but today it’s 'only' a 93 pointer. Outstanding. 93+

  • Structured, tannic and concentrated with layers of dark berry, plum, spice, chocolate, flowers and mocha. The palate enjoyed waves of rich, dark, ripe, pure fruit and ample freshness, giving the wine lift. This dense tannic wine demands time before it fully blossoms and offers its full potential.

  • Cloning of the 1970, compact and tight in nosing and body, dense ?

    Perfect Petrus indeed !!!

But for me, I prefer the elegant side of Petrus. Maybe it's good when getting 50 years old.

    At this moment, we should enjoy the 1980, 1984, 1987, 1992 and/or the 1996.

....................IMO, Lafleur and Trotanoy are highly recommended.......................

  • Thanks to Prayote for this very special bottle.
Not too dark not too light, just as you can describe as deep ruby. Very clear and deep complex nose that you can not get all of it in one full breath. Huge nose of cedar, cherry, very ripe juicy red fruits with mixing blueberries. Dark chocolate scent did come up after a few hours. The wine was not as tannic as I've expected. Huge concentrate sweet tannin, great structure. The most exiting part was the finish which last for more than a minute. For me I think this little beauty is not at it's peak just yet, but still offer amazing memories. should be kept untouch for at least another 5 years with plenty of room to improve.

  • This is simply quite staggering. A magnum with Matthias and the wives. The Pichon Lalande 82, a personal fave we drank afterwards could not trade punches with it. The amazing richness and extraordinary intensity of this wine is something hard to comprehend - quite ethereal. Superbly structured and delineated. Three hours in the decanter and getting better still two hours later. Ripe berries, chocolate, smoky notes but words don't do justice - it has to be tasted. Logic tells you this will improve with age but what is there to improve on I wonder.

  • Tasted next to the legend, the '89 Petrus. The 1990 did not hold a candle and elicited somewhat of a sour cherry finish, almost out of balance with the scale leaning toward to much acid and not sufficient tannins to hold it all together. Not impressed.

  • The color is deep jeweld ruby with big legs. The nose is a darker and more brooding than the HB. Plums and baking chocolate, more flowers. An intoxicating nose. If the nose was great, well the mouthfeel exceeded it. This is an unctuous, extremely complex, deep, and yet perfectly balanced wine. A tremendous mouthfeel coating every taste bud in happiness. Teture, texture, glycerin, wow. Dark stony fruits abound, balanced perfectly with graphite and minerals, dark chocolate, some smoke, and almost like a black plum liqueur flavor. A beautiful wine that will only be better in ten or more years. 99+ pts.

  • the poll on how to decant this was fun. i settled on single, 3 hours prior. in hindsight, it needed at least 3 more.

the color was more evolved than i was comfortable with at first. i bought this from a dallas company called winebroker.com about 3 years ago ( i don't know if they are still in business), but everything was Aok. i could tell the cab was missing, but it was still tremendously structured. i enjoyed following this over the course of the night. it definitely changed, and it definitely got better. by that i mean that the finish got longer. again, the actuality of tasting a legend was palpable. my guests were gaga over it. one of them does have aged bordeaux experience, and he was slurping it down like there was no tomorrow. i was more interested in sipping over time. it's not a fruit bomb, or overwhelming. it's just a wine that you drink, and realize that it's very pleasurable. i enjoyed the mid palate more than the finish.
