Blind Champagne Tasting (Basanti in San Juan Capistrano, CA (South OC)): Bottle bale shows L16 so I assume that is the base year. The cork had a 20 on it so perhaps that is the disgorge year. Juicy style. Lime flesh, flint, some light smoke and seemed pretty accessible to me, showing well.
April Basanti (blind): Blind. A bit of flint on the nose. Very juicy apple, a tad of wood, lively lemon zest (maybe a bit of pith too) on the finish. Liked this.

Wednesday Champagnes at Basanti: Clean and fresh on the nose with young, cut apple qualities. Focused and stony with long acids. More cohesive than my last go. I do wish I knew more about the base vintage and disgorgement information. I know its from the 2021 release. I'm on the fence with this wine and would like to compare vintages for a better picture of what this producer does.

Hawker Food Night: Base on 2017 with reserve from 2016. Aromas exploded out of the glass, red apple, spice, citrus, tropical fruits. Fantastic palate with laser focus acidity.

If I may pillage Edith Wharton writing of poor Lily's worn-out dresses in "The House of Mirth" - "...long unerring lines, the sweep and amplitude of the great artist’s stroke..." Coming down to earth, this is simply round in all the right places. Enjoyed out of Lehmann stems, this bottle was sublime and a great reminder that the first duty of a wine is to give pleasure.

Such a beautiful, seamless champagne. Rich and oxidative but had a steely acidic spine. Nutty and mineral at the same time with pure, crisp red apple fruit. More imperious with air as it put on weight. One of my favourite producers for striking the perfect balance between house and grower.

Disgorged 2023. I would have wanted to wait on this for a couple years but everything else in the small house unit was not adequate for casual drinking. Lots of bruised apple. Clearly Pinot dominant. Strong mousse initially. The textural qualities are evident. There is palate depth and amplitude. There is quince and lots of other flavours I cannot quite pin down. Very saline and a very persistent finish.

Dinner at Jackson Miller @ SSC. Regardless what M-bro told us, that he'll curate/take-care of all the wines, I brought this to dinner anyway, to pair with some moon-cakes that I brought along too. Absolutely 绝配! A spell-binding pairing! This was of the '19/18 base, very young, but with time in glass, it blossomed. Fresh, floral, with peaches, great minerality on the palate, and also the acids/freshness to cut thr' the sweetness of the lotus-paste moon-cakes! Delicious!

I believe this is from the '2021' release. The only other indication on the bottle is an L.16. I'm guessing this is base 2016. My first go with the producer. There is a lot going on here but everybody seems to be doing their own thing. I believe it needs more bottle time for cohesion but there are plenty of pieces for a complete package. Lots of weight yet lean in feel. The mousse does seem to fade fairly quickly. It just needs some integration as all the parts are things I like. Intriguing showing.

Still a bit on the young side, lots of tangy acidity and peach like fruit. A good amount of vinous elements and slight bruised fruit emerge with air. I would hold this for another 3-5 and see where it goes from there.

Very very nice showing. A recent disgorgement, this was quite youthful in nature with white peach and pear. Not much oak signature here as this is matured in large 100L oak barrels. It’s impeccably balanced at 6g/L.

Smoky, textured nectarine, that’s quite round and full and juicy on the palate. Concrete and lilac. Fish emulsion a bit—something umami. Really pleasurable and compelling. So curious about the cépages breakdown seeing as it’s likely sourced at Damery—is it mostly Meunier?
Great bottle of this. Probably 2016 base. Crystalline fruit, touch of red berries, very elegant but grows in the glass nicely and takes on some weight. A champagne for the table

No release or disgorgement information on the label. This bottle was purchased in 2021. This is a bit narrow and raw but still enjoyable. I felt it could use some additional post-disgorgement age to mellow and broaden. Currently I like the nose here more than the palate - the nose shows quite interesting yeasty fresh-baked-bread complexity; but the palate just has a raw dough and slightly greenish acidity that I don't love. Hold.

I've seen this one poking around (and I guess I've even had it once before) but first time when I really had a chance to savor it. The first impression was prickly pear. It does have that strong acid and those flavors that don't quite fit with what you expect champagne to taste like and yet it works very well. I especially appreciated as it opened more in the glass and warmed up a bit as it became a lot more expressive.

Belated Birthday Dinner (Nicolas Restaurant, Teck Lim Street, Singapore): Lovely again - this bottle has put on a smidgen of age since one we had just over a year ago. The nose had a nice floral sweetness to it, along with stone fruit, melons and a nice bit spice and mineral. Very expressive and attractive, with just a little hint of earthy oxidative tones at the edges. It was superbly drinkable on the palate, with a fine, creamy mousse and bright acidity tingling through energetic tones of green apples, lemons and limes - a whole lot more citrusy here than on the nose. Easygoing, eminently drinkable, yet with a serious bit of structure and definition, and plenty of character to boot. I did not find it quite as impressive as the last bottle I had at first, but this really opened up and put on weight through the night - a lovely bottle to start the night off with.

Filaine is my current crush in Champagne. I don't know a ton about the wines but since I first tried them I've been smitten. It shows richness and generosity without weight and while there is a sense of chalk it doesn't come at the expense of a gentle mouthfeel and an ineffable digestible quality.

Old label: L11, cork code K15. Second bottle in only a couple of weeks. Exotic and oaky; pineapple, peaches, dragonfruit, banana, lychee, coconut, cocoa butter, lots of spices: white pepper, cardamom, vanilla, a hint of clove, honey, toasted bread and mixed nuts; oxidative side with vin jaune, an acetic side with varnish. Very rich and full-bodied with a voluptuous texture on the palate; a generous wine with a mature, evolved feeling. 91pt

Old label: L11, cork code F14. Very generous style. Oaky, champignons, candle wax, gunpowder and smoke, toasted bread, lots of natural coconut and coconut oil as well, sweet grapefruit, grilled lemon, hibiscus, black tea, aloe vera, toasted notes with almonds and pine nuts, slightly spicy with black pepper, and oxidative on the finish; surprisingly long. Dense, vinous texture with small and creamy bubbles; medium-high acidity with great ageing potential. Very positive experience with this bottle; can't wait to drink more from the producer. 92pt

Dinner at JB Ah Meng (JB Ah Meng, Geylang, Singapore): What a brilliant NV - this was lovely with the zhichar food at JB Ah Meng. The nose had a smidgen of age on it, with fresh apple and lemon zest notes laced with a little kiss florals, all riding on a bed of chalky mineral. A light and lovely bouquet. It was on the palate where this shone though - lovely cut and energy to it, with fresh acidity and a soft creamy mousse draped over a lovely bright core of blood orange and other sweet citrus tones. The balance was just pitch perfect, given the wine a lovely poise and elegance. Absolutely beautifully put together and drinking very well, this just slipped down beautifully.

Purchased this bottle in 2015, no disgorgement date on the label. Very precise and taut, low dosage, needs a couple more years at least but is starting to develop some complexity. A Neal's Yard cheddar really brought out additional layers of depth. Excellent and should be even better with time.

I love this, so filigreed and elegant. Wraps the palate in flavors that are on the lighter and yellow pitted fruit side. Not particularly brioche-like, maybe cream puff pastry.

pale yallow, light notes of crust of bread and white fruit, at the palate shows a citric profile, precise and straight. Mouthfilling. Best paired with anchovies on bread and butter with Matt at the end of the summer season. Not impressive

No disgorgement info, but this was purchased in March 2017 and delivered in November 2017. Once again I prefer the Cuvee DMY from the same release, drunk several nights ago, to this. It's got some of the same oxidative richness (bruised apple, browned butter) but there's less fruit compared to the DMY. There's tension but it's very austere and has a sour personality I don't care for. Undoubtedly it will loosen up with further aging, but I don't sense an abundance of material.

Q1 - 2018 Tasting - Aged Barolo Theme (NY, NY): After a tasting of 17 barolos, thought this would provide a nice palate cleanse, but I suspect this was not the style to go with and a richer champagne would have been a better transition. This baby is lean and laser focused, with lots of chalk and mineral. This time I missed some of the deeper notes which made this stand out to me in a line up at a champagne tasting.

Aged Barolo (aka Q1 wine club) (The Apt): First of the bonus bottles and meant to be a palate cleanser. The acidity here is almost biting, but coming on the heels of 17 large Barolos that actually worked well since it was a nice reset for me. The wine itself was a bit tight and I'm not sure we really got to understand it at the next level, but fun to have some nice bubbles.

This was a hand sell in a shop. Fine price and the description matched the wine. Majority Pinot Noir. Very rich and toasty with a hint of sweetness though Brut. Chalky minerality. Fantastic rich mousse - creamy and full. Pretty golden color from first fermentation in 100 year old essentially neutral oak that gives it a hint of gold color. Acidity is balancing. Length of finish is long. Citrus pith flavors (lime lemon) as well as fresh quince.

Liked this much more than Adrian did. There's a core of bright lime and pear fruit tinged with very savoury mushroom and yeasty notes, and a vein of chalky minerality beneath. Lots of acidity here keeping it very focused and light on its feet, with impeccable balance.

Hanging out with Salil; 1/21/2017-1/22/2017 (Chicago, IL): L.11. I think Salil is much more keen on this than I am. He's wrong, as usual. But this is still a very solid entry-level champagne. The nose here initially showed a lot of bread and raw white mushrooms, and the palate very much the same. But with air, more of the citrus and mineral qualities come out, which certainly makes this more compelling. For me, this is a bit too acid-driven and doesn't have quite enough fullness on the palate. But if this entry-level wine is any indication, this is a producer to watch.
Excellent bottle of grower champagne. Powerful nose of bruised apple, pear, brioche, toasty pastry. Almost cider like green fruits. Very ripe apple, fresh white nectarine. Fantastic value. The producer works for Bollinger and there are more similarities than not in the styles of wine.

Hard to keep my hands off this. A much better showing than my last bottle with the green apple and lime fruit incredibly bright and vibrant, and an intense chalky and stony minerality beneath. Air brings out layers of herbal, floral, and yeasty/biscuit notes, and it feels remarkably light on the palate thanks to the powerful acidity here. Fantastic Champagne.

Medium lemon-gold with very fine, not very active, beading. Explosive, very striking nose of honeyed orange peel, biscuits, and some floral nose. Amazing mouthfeel, like light, chalky lemon custard. Lemon and lime, minerals, green apple skin, on the palate. Richer, riper style, but with amazing minerality, lime, and acidic cut. Long finish of creamy sour lemon. I am told that this is mostly 2011 base, so I absolutely would love to try a bottling from a better base vintage. Excellent.

Another excellent bottle, though the fruit's more dialed back in this bottle than in others, but the chalky/graphite minerality is even more intense. As usual, great cut and energy on the palate with a long finish that's all citrus fruit and stone, though this bottle came across a touch austere in contrast to others I've had recently.

Absolutely stunning Champagne. So much depth and power here, with an array of fresh citrus, pear, and green apple fruit framed by biscuit and crackery notes, chalky minerality, and other savoury elements that emerge with more air. There's fantastic acidity and overall balance here, and I'm glad I have a bunch more. Filaine might be my favorite new producer "find" this year.

Champagne & Fried Chicken Dinner (Manhattan Wine Company & Porchlight - NYC): This was my favorite wine from Table 10. Primarily pinot noir and only 400 cases made per year. This one had the crisp green apple notes, but also chalk and those yeasty notes that I think add a layer of complexity and richness. Would definitely seek this one out again.

Another outstanding bottle. 11 vintage base, but there are no signs of it here - there's incredible freshness and energy to the bright green apple and citrus fruit flavours here with intense chalky minerality and yeasty accents, but no sign of the '11 greenness at all. The palate has remarkable cut and vibrancy, with powerful acidity and effervescence beneath, and a long finish. Very impressive.

Cellar raiding at Jeff's: Jeff's place, and this is from magnum. What a way to start the party. I didn't catch the disgorgement/lot on this, but it feels riper and more intense than the bottle I had recently. Intensely piercing, bright orchard fruit flavours augmented by mineral and yeasty notes with incredible focus and energy on the palate. A wine I kept coming back to several times through the evening, and each time it seemed to wake up my palate. Stunning Champagne.

I had measured expectations for this after seeing this was L11 (and I've disliked a lot of the 11-based Champagnes I've had so far), but this is fantastic. So precise and focused with intense acidity that gives this incredible cut and energy on the palate, and layers of fresh apples and citrus fruits, dough, lemon cream, and some higher toned herbal notes all coming together very seamlessly. This is way too easy to drink and I need to find more.

Ripe on nose, bakery and honeyed aromas. Very nice on palate, and I would say the blend has more PN than CH or PM as it has good volume and it's vinous but balanced by a piercing acidity. A bit short finish though. Enjoyable either as aperitif or with more consistent dishes.

Deep gold color with pronounced aromas of citrus, honeyed lemons, lemon curd, chalky mineral overtones & bready scents. The palate was rich with intensity of citrus, oak influences, chalk, and some nuttiness with zesty acidity on a long finish.

Easygoing, eminently drinkable, yet with a serious bit of structure and definition, and plenty of character to boot. I did not find it quite as impressive as the last bottle I had at first, but this really opened up and put on weight through the night - a lovely bottle to start the night off with.

Very fruity (orchard fruits), round and full but with enough acidity to keep it pleasant.
Just like the previous bottle, not overly complex but very enjoyable.

Gossamer and filigreed. So elegant and gentle while showing a bunch of complexity. This wine really resonates with me and I preferred it to the 2008 Cristal served alongside. This is my new Champagne crush, thanks Sophie.

pale yallow, light notes of crust of bread and white fruit, at the palate shows a citric profile, precise and straight. Mouthfilling. Best paired with anchovies on bread and butter with Matt at the end of the summer season. Not impressive
