Disgorged January 2015. Identical to my previous note. Initially quite closed and yeasty, needs about half an hour to catch its breath. Such incredible finesse, so many layers and subtleties. It's so easy to overlook them, and just be mesmerised by the effortless elegance. Spiced orange and honey remain the base notes, but a lovely touch of almond on the nose and Pinot Noir fishiness on the finish were noted in particular this time. Apricots and warm spices, white flowers, red apple and ripe lemon are some of the aromatic complexities. Silky mousse and texture. Easily has enough minerally drive and energy to guarantee at least ten more years of meaningful development, but I consider this at peak.

Chilled and opened an hour before service. In the glass, pale pink at the rim, shading to pale copper at the core. On the nose, yeast, orange zest, and in the distant background, perhaps a touch of smoke? On the palate, full-bodied yet crisp, with notes of bread and a citrus-like tang leading the way, with strawberries, currants, oranges, and a bit of sherry on the finish. Like the '98, flexible with a range of vegetables, and like the '98, utterly delicious.

A blend of 80% Grand Cru Chardonnay, 72% from the Côte des Blancs (Avize, Cramant, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger) and 28% from the Montagne de Reims (Puisieulx, Sillery) and 20% Pinot Noir made into red wine, from Sillery and Verzenay. Full malolactic fermentation, disgorged January 2015, dosage 5.5 g/l, 12.5% ABV. Almost fluorescent Negroni colour, lively white foam; wonderful nose, still yeasty and youthful, subtle aromatics, complex and complete, mature but completely fresh, candied orange, hint of honey, Christmas spices, flowers and lemon; relaxed and flowing palate, rich but fresh and refined, youthful minerally energy, citrus zest, smoke, very gentle bitters; long and layered finish. This is rosé Champagne in a different dimension, drink now - 2025.

Holiday dinner with friends at French Embassy, Washington D.C. (Petit Bouchon Restaurant, French Embassy): An exceptional 2002 Dom Ruinart Rosé Champagne. I saw several of us reach for the bottle a second (or third) time, and the wine was gone fairly quickly. With reason. At once beautifully crisp and full-bodied, “like a super elegant rosé”, Ken Brown commented. The wine blends 80% Grand Cru Chardonnay, 72% from the Côte des Blancs (Avize, Cramant, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger) and 28% from the Montagne de Reims (Puisieulx, Sillery) and 20% Pinot Noir made into red wine, from the Silvery and Verzenay crus. It did 100% malolactic fermentation and has a dosage of 5.5 g/l. Superb balance that demands gastronomic foods. Easily a wine for grilled salmon, roast chicken, even veal.
Pausing for the Cause 2019 (Chicago, IL): I thought this bottle was slightly weird; it's not as pure as I remember this wine being the last times I've had it. There's a very distinct funky earth thing on the nose, and the palate comes across disjoint and slightly bitter too. A slightly off bottle?

This is a lovely and very complex rose; dried strawberry, peach pit, orange pith, green tobacco, even some earthy notes; the palate is rich and voluptuous, round and delicious; not what you call a "nervous" or fresh Champagne, but the complexity and depth make up for that and more; bottle purchased from the caves

Impeccable balance, weightless in the mouth with a long finish. Fresh strawberries, chalky mineral, and a touch of yeast and nuts. This is elegant, light, and subtle, deserving of the tasters full attention. Superb.
Followed this along for a couple of days, and it got even better. A hint of sandalwood on the nose developed, and some blood orange on the palate. This is like a hybrid of great white and red Burgundy, complex and subtle.

Post Justin B's 40th birthday celebration dinner - Mostly SQNs. (The Grill Room at the Rosewood DC): Very elegant expression of rose, subtle pink fruit, diluted cherry soda, shy raspberry, smoke salmon without the fish smell, copper, crushed white pepper and strong mineral. Very elegant and refined palate, very fine mousse, subtle pink fruit, medium acidity, strong mineral presence and a long clean finish. Having had the 70s and the 80s versions, I believe this will develop a Burgundian vinous nose. Nice showing.

Bottle purchased after tour at Ruinart in Reims. The tour is excellent if you have the chance. Served chilled on ice. Light salmon pink color. Plentiful very small and very long lasting bubbles. Light yeast, medium fruit, and light alcohol on nose. Light and very elegant with a very long finish. Medium to light acid. Excellent balance. Very complex. This would go well with food. It is a much more interesting wine than the base Ruinart brut rose (which is very good). 80% Chardonnay/20% Pinot Noir. Said to be a classic vintage. Excellent now, will cellar well in my opinion. I would love to try it again in 10 years at its 25 year point.

Chicagoer Rieslingfeier (Chicago, IL): A very nice little interlude into Champagne. This is very bright and well-integrated already, though it displays a bit more steeliness, despite the rounder vintage. In fact it reminds me a little bit of the 2004 DP Rose. In any case, this is definitely accented with tart red fruits (cranberries?) and some really nice chalkiness too. I really don't drink enough Ruinart.

Hillside - Dirty Habit - Nopa (SF): Oak influenced briochey nose. Slightly bitter nose. Grapefruit? Bitter and oaky. Not my favorite. Smells like bourbon. 70 - Ruinart is known to be a reductive style - no new oak. In hindsight, I was probably mistaking extremely developed autolysis and reduction with oak - c.f. the Dom Perignon “P2”. I wonder if tasting it now, I’d have a different aesthetic impression.

A small gathering at Prequel (Prequel - Washington DC): Pretty consistent with the last bottle. Really clean shy red fruits, cherry candy, strawberry and rhubarb pie, a hint of crushed pepper, cooper and mineral. Very much mineral driven palate, cooper and limestone, shy mousse, medium acidity and long clean finish. It is more mineral driven and displaying lesser fruit than the Dom rose. My guess is that it will always be more about mineral than fruit. It will eventually develop delicate red fruit like essence of raspberry. It still needs ten more years of cellaing.

Compared to NV: Sweeter heavier nose. More yeast / toast on nose. Orange color. Much more toasty palate. Less sweet as a result. This is pretty heavy and complex. Much better warmer so wait to drink. 4/5

Enjoyed this champagne at Ruinart. Honestly this is one of the best Champagnes I have ever had. The color is off pink with very vibrant orange hues-think rose gold mixed with copper. The bubble content was very strong, even though this is a 14 year old champagne. On the nose is a mixture of peaches, citrus, and spice. The palate is very refined and demonstrates extensive fruit with a beautiful blend of tannins and spice. I honestly could drink this champagne with hearty dinners as it would not be lost in the flavor. Enjoy now, but I think this could age another 10-15 years easily.

Quite fresh and youthful, easy to enjoy now in youthful way but will improve for another two decades by gaining complexity.

Fine bubble beads through a crisp wine with melon overtones. The very fine tannins from the contact with the pinot skins provides a solid framework for the wine. Yeast component was minimal. Great Champagne, with great complexity that should improve with further cellaring.

HDH auction tasting at Tru; 12/10/2015-12/12/2015 (Chicago, IL): Pale copper colour. The nose is quite austere and not showing very much at the moment, though there is some very nice tart fruit tones. The palate is steely and very austere, and is just not willing to show very much right now. Quite elegant and lots of minerality, and I'm really enjoying the power here, but this might need some time to unwind and show more.

Pale pink (less pink than Ruinart Rose NV). On the nose red fresh fruits with crushed petals and sweet spices (reminds me of mulled wine). A lot going on just on the nose alone, feels even more complex than the Dom R 2004. On the palate, dried mushrooms, red fruits with a touch of savouriness. Can feel that there is very good development in the champagne - like a solid good red wine that opens up with time. 100% grand cru, of which 80% chardonnay and 20% pinot noir vilify en rouge. This bottle was disgorged 2012. Classic ruiner style with fresh, aromatic and lifted notes yet balanced by a gentle savouriness .

Ruinart Seminar (Flatiron Wines & Spirits, NYC): OK - this is the real deal. A wow nose - creamy and exotic, red fruit - very herbal, mushrooms, earthy - more like a red burg than most Rose wines I have had - vanilla and malt - the nose is all over the place - quite complex. Assertive mousse - tart on the entry with a line of incredibly pure red berried fruit - wow - the fruit hits the palate on entry and then it transmits through the midpalate in a linear way - like it was boosted by a two-stage rocket. Also notes of spice, ginger, earth as well. Long red berry, spice and mineral/steel finish. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5.5+/6, Finish - 5+/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17+/20.

Darn good Rose, really showcasing chardonnay with subtle supporting nuance coming from Pinot Noir. Lengthy and incredibly elegant.

Bitter and oaky. Not my favorite.
Smells like bourbon.

Ruinart is known to be a reductive style - no new oak.

Wine Dinner Extravaganza (David Burke's Primehouse - Chicago IL): Lots of apple and quince with lots of floral character, some strawberry hints. Very powerful, very long, with a minerally texture I really enjoy.

Annual gathering with Chicago winos in Chicago - Burgs, SQNs and Cult cabs (David Burke's Primehouse): Very clean nose displaying cherry candy, fresh raspberry, strawberry and rhubarb pie, copper and mineral. Delicate palate, very fine airy mousse, candied red fruit driven palate impression, copper, medium acidity and lovely long clean finish.

Wines Tasted at HDH Auction; 12/10/2015-12/12/2015 (Tru Restaurant - Chicago IL): Beautifully floral. Lots of intense apple, some strawberry in background. Great textures, very tasty already, but even more cellarworthy.

Much toastier than the NV. A clean wine with light funk and brie notes on the nose, light spice, and caramel notes. Great pairing with combo of cured and tartar of wild king salmon with crispy skin. 92+

Amazing nose, orange peel, high salinity, interesting in that's it's primarily chard driven. Does have a great savory element to it. Good? Yes. $300 good? No, especially considering even NV Krug Rose is a better wine IMO (and cheaper). Worth trying, however. - Drank @ CHWC Ruinart Champagne Tasting

My first ever visit to Champagne; 6/22/2015-6/23/2015 (Reims): my first time trying this recently released wine. Alluringly floral start that showcased Chardonnay (80%) with subtle Pinot notes in support. Apple, pear and quince aromas an favors. Elegant and well styled vs powerful, this has a long, elegant, expanding finish. Very cellarworthy.

If you don't like this, then you're a damn idiot. Soft, slightly buttery with a touch of something I can't put my finger on...a fruit...like maybe starfruit? Oh who cares, it's amazing.

Crush's Champagne Gala 2013 (Crush Wine & Spirits, Midtown Manhattan): Pale pink. Perfumed rosy nose with a deep soil note -- very inviting. Palate packs a wallop -- acid, intense minerally red fruit, and more roses. Wonderful, fine-bead mousse. Excellent length, almost endless. Again, first rate. Will need some time, but back up the truck.
