J3. Last had this wine in 2021 and rated it a 97. This time was more muted. We took it to room temp and chilled it back up looking for its depth, but it remained elusive. Still a beautifully balanced wine that outclasses most sem/sauv wines. MPD at Bisato.

A well stored bottle needs a 2-3 hour cool decant. This is a Day 2 review. Nose offers white peach, nectarine, crushed stone, tangerine zest, manzanilla . Medium body for this wine, but waxy, viscous, and rich. Limestone, green tea, cherimoya, mandarin, hazelnut and brazil nut, and sourdough crumb. Worked beautifully with tarragon buttered lobster rolls; Patagonian Toothfish richness would work too. 40 second finish: peach pit, beeswax, white pepper. Defining peak for this wine defies objectivity, as it will be wonderful through most stages of its life. I’d guess it to be halfway through its ability to justify a 93/94 score. Wonderful!!

Dry, high alcohol, medium acidity. The quality of the wine is there but the alcohol overpowers the fruit and nose. The wine got better with air but at this price point I was expecting more. Definitely tastes better chilled as alcoholic taste is minimized. The wine is complex and balanced but maybe just not my style. 3 hour update, wine another point better with air.

J.L. Chave Hermitage vertical tasting (Freiheit Vinothek, Ulm, Germany): Double decanted some hours before. Clear, deep golden colour with an amber hue. Very round and soft nose with some bees wax. On the palate bold and powerful. Medium acidity. 14% abv that are well integrated. Spicy, bees wax, floral, white blossoms. Round and balanced, but also with a nice tension and depth. Long, fruity and waxy finish. Potential for another decade or even more. 93+

The red of whites. As voluptuous as they come — call it plus size. Kicks off past the end zone with smoke — is it toasted oak? Minerality showing through and through, where the smoke also plays a lead role. On the palate, and a touch of the nose as well, peach and nectarine and general pitted yellow/orange stone fruit (if there’s quince I wouldn’t know… who has had a quince? not this guy!). Medium acidity, though what is most intriguing is the lengthy and — as I write this post-sip 60 seconds in — almost bitter aftertaste, but not at all with the negative connotations of bitter; it’s a “rich bitterness” as Erin Healy calls it, or an “opulent sessionable bitterness” as I describe it. Erin mentioned that it was a result of the 80% Marsanne interacting with the oak, which is still present after 10 years though may drop out very soon (n.b., she did note that the 1985 Chave Hermitage Blanc was on her top 10 list). After two hours, a light butterscotch; not the candy in the orange wrapper my grandpa used to eat bags of daily but a more approachable one. @ Gramercy Tavern

Dark yellow, almost yellow-orange with slight oxidation. Apricots, cantaloupe, and slight ripe peach flavors, with an interesting nuttiness and honeyed sweetness. By the end, turned dry and flinty. Interesting wine. Would be fantastic with a well-paired cheese plate.

Mid+ gold, the aromas reveal toasty new oak, smoke, candied ginger, dried tangerine peel, marjoram/fennel fronds, stone fruits, dried pear, and yellow apple. A rich, open-knit entry with a soft, supple, almost glassy texture that the wine glides along has lots of stone fruit with toast and marmalade on toast with butter curls, some mineral edges like a brine solution, a touch of smoky and underscored by medium acidity. The mid-palate is broad with pear flesh and hot cayenne spice. Still youthful, this is a powerful and classic hermitage.

At first pour I thought “oh no, it’s oxidized” but the dark yellow color belied a beautiful wine. Texturally thick and oily in the mouth, notes of white peach apricot and lemon scented honey. Round pear and cantaloupe up front with enough acidity to keep this from going flabby. Drank this bottle too fast, so easy to enjoy. Once it opened up, a stupendous wine.

M&PD Zoom Tasting: Northern Rhône (Zoom): Insane. Honey, quince, almond, and a hint of kerosene and white pepper. I am used to Chave being mineral and cerebral, but this was exotic and generous. The palate is oily, mineral, salty, long, so long. Amazing wine. This is WIDE open right now.

One of those wines that makes you reaffirm your belief that there's a group of winemakers and bottles that transcend the norm, hit all the high notes, and are consistently spectacular. This is one of them, and sadly/cruelly, 99.5% of the population can no longer afford it. Just a wonderful interplay of texture, rich fruit, balance, everything. The difference between this and a 100 point wine is tiny, but perhaps this vintage could use a little more concentration and structure.

Restrained, closed on the nose leading people to conclude this was slightly corked. I was in doubt. Very good material, without a doubt. Subtle with marks of white fruit and spices. Very well contained and structured. In the same mold as the 2014 perhaps with a bit more material. Could be a great wine in the making.

Mouton, Shafer, SQN, Prum, Chave, CdP, Yquem, Port ++ (Home): I let this bottle get some air (a couple of hours prior to serving). Served at about 60F. Its always a tough decision when to open these. They go in an out so often. In the end, I went with it and while there may be times it shows better, I was not disappointed. Medium golden in color. The nose is very pretty. Dried honey, marzipan, slight wax and hints of flowers (I suppose white, but could not really go that far). On the palate, this is bit and round with a nice backbone of acidity. In many ways, it drank like a white wine. Went wonderfully with a Mushroom and seitan over noodle dish that had a bit of a kick. Nice finish. About a glass left, which I am looking forward to today.

What an amazing white wine. Jefferson was right: Hermitage makes the world's best white wines, and maybe reds too. Rich and almost thick in the glass, with a stunning golden color and a nose that just pulls you in: golden gooseberries, honeyed spice cake, creme caramel. Dry, yet lively with lifting acidity... The fruit is somehow ripe and rich, but not heavy. Ends with an endless and amazing finish that coats the palate. Drinking well now and will hold for years (then eventually should close down, but reopen at age 25 or so in a new form...). I have 4 more and it won't be enough!
