Side by side with the 2014 Lanessan. Last year did the same comparison with 2010s, and Lanessan was the winner as Cantemerle came off a little chunky and overdone. This 2014 Cantemerle is in a good place: very fragrant - violets and oak - and beautifully balanced on the palate between cherry and plum fruit, pleasant tannic grip, and fresh acidity. 2014 is really a drinker's vintage, I love it. The oak is a little too much for my taste. Will follow for several days and see how it evolves. On day 2 this is similar, while the Lanessan improved. They are distinctly different, but both delicious: Cantemerle more savory and aromatic (and oakier), Lanessan more about pure fruit.
decanted 2 hrs then back into the bottle, drank half over 3 hours. good density, textbook left bank bordeaux. black and red fruit, mint, dry. decent balance and ready to drink but lacking a bit of charm - unrealized potential perhaps. after a few days in the fridge under vacuvin, softer and more merlot dominated. for me, not a big step up from more value-priced cru bourgeois or cotes de bordeaux estates.

garnet hues on the edge of the glass; cigar box, forest loam, land jaeger and sweet herbs on the nose; rich black fruit, black currants and gunpowder on the palate. Well-rounded tannins, great complexity, a good fruit/acid balance. Definitely drinking well now, best to consume this year.

Decanted 3hrs. Pours a mediump purple in the glass. Developing, med + intensity aromas of black currant, black cherry, black plum, creme de cassis, cedar, pencil shavings, oak, leather, vanilla, some cooked black fruits, dried herbs, dried blackberry. In the mouth, the wine is dry, med + acid, med + tannin, med alcohol, med + body, med + intensity on the palate, med finish. Overall, very good, can drink now, but can age further.
I would have like to see some more depth and body on this. Very early stage maturity, drink or hold 10+ yrs.

There are already some "spot on" tasting notes on this wine and not much I can add. One person noted the basics and I will add my own: Garnet Dry Med + alcohol Nose : Soft black fruits, forest floor, lead pencil, tobacco Medium body Palette : slight bitter cassis, dark fruits, forest floor and dried herbs
My wine was already showing garnet with slight hints of brown. Forrtunately, my bottle wasn't over the hill, but might have been perfect a year or two ago.
The most important note I wish to make is I found the drinking window to be at its peak now. I would not hold this wine. I thought it may have been my bottle, but once I read other taster's notes, I agree you should not hold this wine. It will not develop any further. I think this is a vintage that is drinking younger than other vintages and I need to further investigate this finding in my own cellar.
Enjoy this wine now!

Lovely Bordeaux with typical Cab flavors. Very expressive and harmonious. I was surprised with the maturity and warm smooth fruit with a bit of spicy dust in the finish. I feel this is ready to drink.

Tasted over two days, alongside the same vintage d'Armailhac.
Expressive bouquet of distinctly Cabernet Sauvignon markers, in Haut-Médoc terroir. Blackcurrant, pyrazines, and gravel, with herbaceous top notes, backed by mineral ores, coal in particular.
The wine tastes like it smells. Correct! Bold yet lean. Compelling veins of fruit and earth. Balanced oak and alcohol, excellent structure. A little light at the back and finish.
Going strong and likely to continue evolving for five to seven years. Likely to be at peak between 2032-2035. Delightful QPR.

Staid. I just don’t understand what anyone thinks they would gain by aging the 2014 Cantemerle another five, ten, fifteen years. To me the wine is drinking perfectly now. And that seems to be a common refrain of the 2014 vintage. It just hasn’t closed down. And yet, that should in no way be interpreted as a weakness. This wine, this vintage is staid. The way I love it. Lovely restraint, lovely restrained summer flowers. Beautifully reticent. Pretty. I have 3 bottles left of this wine, I wish I had 30. An easy 93+ point rating.
Had a glass only with lunch at 67 Pall Mall. Medium garnet, oak well integrated, good freshness but not particularly aromatic, medium (-) body, short finish. A fairly light Cantemerle, already pleasant to drink, especially with food.

Opened last night, and drunk mostly today. Opaque dark red. Seems very young and primary still. Nose shows purple flowers but little else. Palate has a glassy texture but more tannin and acid than fruit, at least at present. Very crisp. Seems lacking in fruit and a bit hollow on the finish. Was expecting more from this bottle, as I have generally had good luck with this estate. Does it simply need more time? 5-12-14-7: 88/100.

Consistent with past notes 2.5 years ago. Decanted a hour ahead of beef pot roast. Still primary, with strong black licorice notes on the nose and a compact/black-fruit palate. Drink 2024-2032. Technical score: 92. Enjoyment score: 90.

My farewell dinner . Traditional Chinese Cantonese food. Direct delivery from wine shop to the restaurant. 3 bottles. All decanted for 30 mins. Colour was crimson with good legs. Nose was a bit tight initially but became better 30 mins later. Tannin still a bit harsh but the texture gradually soften and much integrated at the end. Surprisingly median after taste. Pleasant wine for around £38 and a great bargain. Buy some if you can and potential to develop further.

This is impressive and it opened up well but it can use another 5+ years and will hold a long time. Right now, the bouquet is wonderful (violets, talc, walnuts) and worth cracking a bottle--not that the drink will disappoint. But this is rich in flavor and still a bit tight in body. Enjoyable, uber-claret, but 5 years, hell, maybe two, will reward. Very well done.

Beautiful milk chocolate on the nose along with herbs & black fruits. After two hours lovely perfume reveals itself along with cassis, cedar, cream & potting soil.
The first taste was very green same with the finish. But after two hours the tannins toned down a bit & the wine becomes juicy with black fruits, herbs, oak & minerals. Four hours reveal some cherry & balsamic notes.
Dry tannins with medium plus acidity. I would give it more time in the cellar, the nose is better than the palate right now

2014 Château Cantemerle had an unusual contrast between flavours of ripe black fruits and lively acidity. The developing Haut-Médoc was clear and medium ruby in colour with traces of fine sediments. Aromas of ripe black plum, forest berries, prune and lilac were accompanied by hints of mocha and leather.
The mouthfeel was dry and medium-bodied, with medium-high levels of chalky tannin and precise acidity. There were flavours of blackberry, figs, earth and breakfast tea in a medium finish. The medium body and acidity seemed to defy the ripe fruit tones. It can be just a matter of taste, but I often prefer Bordeaux having more coherent taste profiles. The 13% alcohol was civilised. The empty bottle weighed 555 grams.
The wine is composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. The grapes are completely destemmed. Alcoholic fermentation takes six to eight days at approximately 27 degree Celsius. Subsequent maceration on the grape skin takes about 30 days. The wine is raised for twelve months in medium-toast French oak barrels, of which 40% are new. The annual production is 400,000 bottles.

P'n'P - primary fruits - mostly red berries, with focused and précised mid weighted body. Tannins are friendly and accessible, easy to enjoy now, very well controlled tension and energy that will drive it through the next decade.(Etihad Business class)

Entering prime time. Good now but will continue to mature with some time. Round and juicy with a longish finish. Just a bit under ripe though I think. Open with confidence. Wish I was sitting on a case.

Decanted from a Jeroboam and shared with a roomful of Surgery faculty and trainees. In a great place now, if you like secondary but not tertiary. Peak for my taste will be in 3-6 years. Gives you everything you hope for in a good Left bank Bordeaux.

By the glass at the BA Lounge LHR. Probably opened for some time as it felt a touch dry and oxidised and a lot worse than what we remember it to be. Or maybe the the wine is on the way down from 2 years ago ( Papies 90) when we had it last in the same place … Touch green feel, rougher edges and lacks elegance and fluidity. 88-89

Very approachable, but still in a "relaxed primary" state. Merlot seems evident here, with a generally soft and supple presentation, albeit only medium-light to medium bodied. Medium acidity. Alc. not noticeable. Drink now and over the next ten years.

Good structure but quite green for what is considered a strong ripe year for the left-bank, potentially over extracted. There are far better Bordeaux at this price level , avoid.

I decanted the wine for three hours. Deep ruby colour. Medium intensity, developing. Dry, medium acidity, medium tannin, medium alcohol, full body. Medium flavour intensity, medium (+) finish. Aroma and flavour of intense, well defined, fresh, black currant, plum, blackberry, tobacco, smoke and a bit of vanilla. Good wine, can drink now but has potential for ageing. A “Classic” and a good example of affordable Haut Medoc Bordeaux.

Decanted 2 hours ahead of seared black pepper flank steak. Dark crimson color with a ruby/violet hue. The nose is restrained but brought oak, mocha, blackcurrant, blackberries, and anise. The palate is full, square, compact, and concentrated, bringing black and red fruit with chocolate and lingering notes of forest floor, tobacco, and leather into the tannic finish. Drink 2022-2030. Technical score: 92. Enjoyment score: 91.

Medium ruby in appearance. Fruity on the nose with plum, cherry and a touch of spice. Dark fruits on the palate, cedar and spice. Good acidity, medium weight, well balanced. This wine is in its early stages but is perfectly drinkable and enjoyable and should develop well over the next 5 years or so.

Tasted blind. Clear, med + ruby, no sign of aging. Med to med + intensity, with black cherry, black currant, red cherry, herbs, bell pepper, cedar, tobacco from 12 mos in French oak, 40% new. The nose is developing. The palate is dry, somewhat austere, with med + acidity, med alcohol (13%) and med +, chewy tannins. Med body, flavor intensity and length. Cool climate, Left Bank, with a possibility of Chile due to herbaceous and vegetal notes. Probably 5 years old. Drink now but has potential for improving over the next several years. 60% Cab Sauv., 30% Merlot, 6% Cab Franc and 4% Petit Verdot.

Medium ruby transparent. Lovely nose, balanced with ripe dark fruit, cherries and berries, leather, some earthiness too with sweet spice nuances and cedar. Great balance with good structure and balancing acidity, good depth of flavour and moderate oak based on the age of the wine. By the glass at the BA lounge, LHR, from what looked like a freshly opened bottle. Very good especially for the vintage, classic nose, not pushed or over oaked, dark fruits soft pepper and herbaceous side. Good 89-90 for now and a good performance
Very interesting wine. Had high hopes for spectacular. It’s good but not the normal big cab that I enjoy. Have two more bottles in the cellar and save for a couple of years.
Love this wine! Unbelievable value for its structural complexity, could use a little more terroir and flavor complexity...but can hold its own against any Bordeaux out there

PnP in Reidel BDX and slow ox for 90 minutes prior to dinner. Served around high 50s to low low 60s. A 2 hour plus decant might be even better? Semi translucent dark ruby red color. Smoky cedar, tobacco and berries on the nose. Restrained & balanced; cherry, licorice, dark chocolate, cedar, mineral, tobacco and savory herbs on the palate. Surprising nuance and range for the $27 I paid last spring. Terrific value and a great place to explore BDX for the uninitiated. Tannins are about 85% resolved, mostly showing up on the finish. Once the tannins are fully resolved this will likely flirt with a 93pt rating. I can see this really rocking in 3-5 years. A modest 13% Acl.

Very elegant Haut-Médoc – quite light and fine but that's sort of my style so I don't mind. Not sure about aging, but it drank well after about 4 hours in a decanter. Not super complex, but a very nice wine for the table. Not bad value at $28+ either.

Tasted over three days. Unsurprisingly, tight and moderately oaky upon opening, and for the first several hours. Toward evening's end, the wine began to show delightfully edgy berry and mineral veins. It evolved into a traditional, if somewhat forward, Bordeaux by the second day. The berry vein of the first day turned distinctly to a blackcurrant and blackberry amalgam, which tantalizingly approached crème de cassis-like textural appeal. The wine also presented highly appealing gravel and mineral elements, at once compact and piercing, and which also enhanced the wine's impressive medium plus acid and medium tannin structure. It held its rustic form on the third day, showing every indication of moderate+ cellaring potential, no less than twelve to fifteen years.
In an uneven, somewhat forward and weighty vintage, this stands out for its traditionally edgy form. While it may improve, its approachability after several hours of air makes it difficult to stay away from now. Excellent QPR. 92-93.

Only a short decant so perhaps not drunk in the best possible light. A lighter style for my tastes but the elegance is a strong point. Some spice from the wood and light red berries. Ripe strawberry, candy, dash of cedar on the nose. Light to medium bodied, pencil lead, moderate intensity sour red and black fruits, sprightly acidity and fine-boned persistent tannins. Drinkable now, bistro-style Bordeaux of high Merlot content for drinking over the short to medium term.

Solid effort. To me what stands out right now if the tartness of the red fruit and the ability of a small amount of CF and PV to round out the overall Medic quality of the wine. I think this should improve with cellar time. A solid qpr here.

Creamed dark fruit, wood shavings, unyielding nose. Pleasant lightness on the palate with good supporting acidity and tannins, vague hintsof blackcurrant, herbs and gravel. Ultimately dull though, quite disappointing. Perhaps it needs time to show secondary characters of interest, but I'm not convinced. There are other Bordeaux for this price that show far better even young

A solid effort from a vintage that is not overly celebrated. Buy this at the $31 tag and drink over the next Five years. Cedar, Asian spice and grip greet you, whilst a bit of clove knocks back the finish. Don’t hold past 2025.
Not bad. Reasonable expectations and a short decant help the score for this bottle. You can tell its a Bordeaux sure enough and it will hold up nicely to meat dishes, even with heavy sauces involved. Well rounded effort in an off-vintage. Good early drinking Bordeaux.

More about the future than current enjoyment. Smoke and oak influence on the nose; but balanced and appropriate for the fruit. Palate is well built, but oak notes stand out. Dark fruit profile with a nice ripe plush profile. Quite good, but best to hold.

Decanted for 3 hrs, this is coming with solid red fruits (raspberry), in a medium body and quite accessible tannins, it is starting to integrate but still needs time - a blend of 47%CS, 38%M, 9%CF, 6%PV. Fairly priced, but won't rush to buy more.

This may not match up to all your criteria, but if like me you live in a community where good wine is scarce, this is a great deal in a very nice red wine at under $35. I recommend it.
Follow up: It is quite young and can seem too immature on first taste, but the last glass on the second day was excellent. So maybe open a day early.

A mid-weight wine that's so closed it's almost devoid of any notable aromas or flavors, with significant but relatively fine grained tannins. On day 2 some classic Cabernet flavors emerge with good length, though there's still almost nothing on the nose. My best guess is that it's pretty solid and will age well, as long as you appreciate the general style of the vintage.

P: Med body; Nice frt met by an astringent pucker which only somewhat works itself out by the LONG, spicy finish with a bitter/SWTNESS to the dusty tannins. NEEDS/deserves cellaring through '20, I'm guessing. 16.5, 16 (2x), & 15.5/20 Jancis Robinson, + 8 scores on wine-searcher's Tasting Notes pg. During a 2014 walkabout arrivage tasting, no tasting notes given, only selective comments. In general I did not walk away excited after sampling ca 40 bottles (to be fair, the big weights were all missing). In a nutshell, while the vintage is pleasant and fresh, it is often too lean, lacking charm and aromatic depth. Still, Bordeaux being Bordeaux the wines are not made for immediate drinking so, I don't see the point in buying them now. There will be plenty of them in the market in 2024 when they reached their peak.

Tight as a drum of course. Left open for a few hours, then double decanted and left for a few hours more. At this point it started to show some nice aromas of red fruit, licorice, and oak while the palate broadened into a rich and powerful texture. The tannin was surprisingly ripe and pleasing though the oak unsurprisingly not integrated. Even after another day it improved showing rich spiced red fruit character and well balanced acid. A very very classy Medoc that will age handsomely for 15+ years.

VERY dark and tannic on the pop & pour. Not very expressive on the nose either. After a half hour it starts to open up on the palate more than the nose - dark fruit on the forefront, with a slight bit of mushroom, olive, and just a wee hint of herbs on the finish. Medium+ acidity and a medium finish. Overall, a very nice bottle that's got potential. If you like the darker domestic Cabs you'll enjoy this.
As usual, I'll follow this over a few nights to see how it evolves before scoring.
The tannins settled a little on the 2nd and 3rd night as expected. The tartness from acidity is very noticeable but works with the fruit. A decent bottle and pretty solid QPR.

-- decanted one hour before initial taste -- -- tasted non-blind over two days --
NOSE: unusually high-toned aromatics, which are dominated by purple fruits and a medium-strength sweet oak note; not as oaky as many young Bdx.; not funky; no pencil shavings; light spice (likely oak); slight citric aspect.
BODY: dark ruby color of great depth; medium-light to medium bodied.
TASTE: moderate concentration of fruit; mostly purple-fruited, but I sense a minority percentage of red fruit flavor here, too; high acidity; light, drying tannin; hint of smoky coffee (oak); hint of stony mineral; "lovely," not a big bruiser; the acidity is a pleasant surprise; drinks very well now, but no rush to drink immediately; ever-evolving in the glass --- with time, slight bitter and citric (lime/orange) aspects reveal themselves; overall, this is quite impressive in an elegant fashion --- not words I frequently get to use for such an infantile Bdx.. This wine did fill-out a bit on Day 2. ultimately, my score may be conservative, and I have the gut impression that it is. Drink Now through 2030.

PnP Already nice typical Medoc nose with ripe fresh cassis and graphite. Lot of acidity on the mouth without food and rather soft and simple at first with no hard edges. However, nose developed more floral notes and palate, elegant red fruit. A little Burgundy like. It’s still very young, but approachable now. I’ve liked this producer each time I’ve had it. It’s a more classic wine that over-delivers for the price. Always feels Bordeaux and more on the elegant side. We’ll see how it develops, but for now a 91+. https://winediplomats.com/

Tasted against perhaps 45 other 2014s Bordeaux at UGC early 2017. Certainly the best value of 2014 Bordeaux encountered so far at ~$28 USD, and one of the more approachable today. Will buy, drink some now, hold some more until 2020+ and well beyond.

One person noted the basics and I will add my own:
Garnet
Dry
Med + alcohol
Nose : Soft black fruits, forest floor, lead pencil, tobacco
Medium body
Palette : slight bitter cassis, dark fruits, forest floor and dried herbs
My wine was already showing garnet with slight hints of brown. Forrtunately, my bottle wasn't over the hill, but might have been perfect a year or two ago.
The most important note I wish to make is I found the drinking window to be at its peak now. I would not hold this wine. I thought it may have been my bottle, but once I read other taster's notes, I agree you should not hold this wine. It will not develop any further. I think this is a vintage that is drinking younger than other vintages and I need to further investigate this finding in my own cellar.
Enjoy this wine now!

Decanted for 3 hours, opened up an hour or so after that. Dark fruits, oak, and some tannin up front. Needs time and air. I would hedge a bet that a few more years in the bottle will greatly benefit this wine.

More about the future than current enjoyment. Smoke and oak influence on the nose; but balanced and appropriate for the fruit. Palate is well built, but oak notes stand out. Dark fruit profile with a nice ripe plush profile. Quite good, but best to hold.

Nicely balanced. Not sure where this is going to go, but I would check back in 5 years.

Sorry, but I just didn’t see what others saw. Better after 3 hrs decanting. Great color. Little odor. Decent legs. Won’t hurry to the store for another bottle. Maybe I needed to cellar it another few years?

Decanted for 3 hrs, this is coming with solid red fruits (raspberry), in a medium body and quite accessible tannins, it is starting to integrate but still needs time - a blend of 47%CS, 38%M, 9%CF, 6%PV. Fairly priced, but won't rush to buy more.

The wine looks ruby colored. The legs are medium. There is moderate sediment in the bottle. It smells like game. It tastes like toast. The body is light/medium. The wine has round texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has medium acidity.

Taste Bordeaux & Burgundy (San Diego Wine Co.): Supposedly 47% C.S., 38% Merlot, 9% C.F., & 6% P.V.; 13% ABV
N: CLOSED

Heck, yeah. I've had the '89 and '90 and '09 and '10 Cantemerles and this one is the best so far. Great right off the bat, and just keeps gaining depth over the course of the evening. Balanced, high-acid, and it's like Tango dancing with someone who reads you well.

Black currants, floral, herbs, leather, smoky cedar, and pleasant oak. Lighter bodied than many of its Haut-Medoc peers.

Nice darker fruit with some roasted coffee, crushed flowers and some sweet spices. It's medium bodied with medium-high acidity and medium+ silky tannin. Good length. A very pretty Cantemerle, not on the level of e.g. 2010 but a great value at approx. $25.

En Primeur Bdx. 2014 tasting event, tasting pour, short note.
Fine classic Bordeaux nose with gravel and pencil shavings, black currants and cassis, herbs, leather & some oak is present, but not obtrusive.
Palate is quite concentrated, but in a good way.
Herbal finish, with medium + tannins.
This will develop well, and is as always a good buy in most vintages.
A safe card for the cellar, as this will turn out very fine in 8 – 12 years.
