Similar impressions as Rich. Starting to develop that claret-like character that zins/mixed blacks can get. Complex nose of dried black cherries, blackberry, orange zest, sandalwood, and baking spice. Medium-bodied with tannins and acidity nicely integrated. Perhaps lacking a little concentration on the midpalate, the black/red fruit notes are abundant on the attack but quickly give way to garrigue and a mineral finish of graphite and organic earth. For my palate this is in a great spot, paired nicely with pizza.

Just so good right now. Bright citrus and orange rind, with some slight baking spice on the finish. Oak is fully integrated and the acidity is front/center. Just a medium bodied mouthful of goodness. Another example of why we age these wines....although it could absolutely go longer and possibly improve a bit.

Drinking very nicely. Clearly a field blend - Zin not too dominant in nose or palate. More black (and mybe some blue) fruited than red. Touch of violets. Some Asian spice. Med low acidity. Mature.

Never know what I’m going to get when I open a Bedrock. This one seems to be okay with some blackberries, licorice, brambles and such, not overly complex but good. Opened and decanted about an hour before dinner and seemed to be the same from start to about 3 hours later.

Dark fruit with a savory outer layer is accented by Mediterranean spice and well ripened grape stems. At age nine, this wine is drinking wonderfully. There a tamed level of acidity on the finish that keeps this wine lively. Good juice.

Plummy and succulent and well in its way to resolved. Italian plum, manzanita, violet, and blackberry compote on the nose. Palate seems mid-weight for the genre (listed at 14.5%, with no sense of heat or torréfaction). Plenty of black fruit, though not necessarily of the berry variety, ultra-fine tannins, and just enough savory/earthy kick to lend a sense of place. More energy than mass at this stage. Fabulous with local lamb ribs with a spicy Korean glaze, Momofuku Brussels sprouts, and buttermilk mashed potatoes. Just the thing for a raw Maine night. Very good and certainly worth seeking out. (Decanted for 1 hour and served cool.)

Somewhere I saw it was National Zin Day. Like I need an excuse to open a Bedrock Zin! On PnP, this has bracing acidity but with minimal air it opens up to a wonderful wine where the mixed blacks are as prominent as the Zinfandel. Meat, bramble, dark fruit. Excited I have more.

Purple in color. 14.5% ABV. Sublime nose of black fruits, anise and pepper. Full bodied with perfect acidity. Lush, dark fruits in spades. Black cherry, black raspberry, plums and cocoa on the palate. Nice length on the finish. The Bedrock section of Papera Ranch contains more mixed blacks than the rest of Papera and this wine perfectly reflects that. Delicious and aging oh so well. Best over the next several years.
Night 1 this was needing a bit of air to open up, but it's a fairly classic brambly and earthy Zin. A few days later with a partially-used Repour this had a touch of oxidation but was otherwise still quite good.

A bottle ten months ago was raw, grapey, hot, and about as integrated as the Little Rock schools in 1950. Given all that, I let this one breathe for two hours before tasting. Although much improved with additional bottle age and air, it still wasn't anything to write home about. A somewhat shy, non-descript nose. All kinds of dark fruits - plums, blackberries, etc. Medium body and a surprisingly good finish. However, it just struck me as a little dull and lifeless, kind of like the Ridge zins that I've had in recent years.
Two glasses left and consumed on Day 2. Wow! Dark fruits are now augmented by some red fruit and even a little citrus. Dull and lifeless have been replaced by bright and vibrant. The palate and finish have been replaced by a rich, seamless transition. The reticent nose and good finish have been replaced by a nice, expressive nose and a rather bodacious finish. Originally scored this an 88. 24 hours after opening, it merits a 92 or better.
Very good field blend. Funky nose of tart fruit and something like Burgundian funk. Tart blackberry & baking spice notes on palate w/ strong acidity.
Drank side by side with 2014 Carlisle Papera Zinfandel (same vintage & vineyard, but different blocks) and they were very similar on palate, but the Carlisle had a richer nose of cocoa, whereas this one was a bit funkier.

More high toned, red-fruited and tart than I was expecting, maybe coming from the Carignan? In good condition, but don't know that it will improve going forward.

Consumed over 2 days (vacuvined and refrigerated), note from day 2. Appearance: Clear, medium garnet with slight bricking. Nose: Clean, medium+ intensity with developing aromas of red fruit - cherry & strawberry, black pepper, venison, and bacon fat. Palate: Dry, medium acid, medium tannins are soft and velvety, medium+ intensity, 14.5% abv is masked very well, flavors of cherry, strawberry, and black pepper with distinct gamey notes and a long satisfying finish. Overall an excellent wine entering it's prime drinking window showing exceptional balance and length with very good complexity and intensity. Can drink now or over next 2-3 years.

After a short decant, the dark fruit, Mediterranean spice, floral notes emerged from under the bright acidity. This is an indication that this w8ne has many more years of good drinking in its future. Good depth and texture. The last two glasses the fruit came alive. I am going to try to be patient and wait two years before revisiting this wine. Good juice.

Day 1: a little shrill, very high acid which didn't blend in well. I put the cork back in.
Day 2: very pure fruit nose--plum and blackberry. I would describe this nose as elegant, rather than intense. Still medium plus acid, stronger than one would expect. the palate is classic zinfandel. Brambly fruit, plums. A very classic, straightforward zinfandel, with maybe a touch of carignan to add the brightness.
Day 3: Now this has really unfurled into the best version of itself. Still plum and blackberry. But now some granite character, a little garrigue as well. Medium tannin, good acid. A bit of minerality on the palate as well. Still straightforward, but very good. A pleasure to drink.

Drank with a diverse group of about 10 wines. This came across as good, but a touch sweet. Color was super purple (some commented “mega purple?”, which we all knew wasn't the case, but it still had that uber-vibrant color on an 8-year old wine). Ultimately, a good wine, but not the best Papera I have had or the best of what Bedrock can do.
Decant this for several hours or open up the day before. Was very good on PnP but the glass and a half I let breathe over night was next level deliciousness!
Disappointing. Came across as raw, "grapey", tannic, and not at all integrated. Improved ever-so-slightly after about two hours of breathing, but it still was less than pleasant. It wasn't corked, and it wasn't cooked (other bottles from the same shipment have been fine). It actually, inexplicably seemed like a very, very young bottle and/or one that was suffering from bottle shock, although neither is possible. I have one more, and I'm gonna give it at least another year to settle down.

PnP and followed over the evening. This exploded with blueberry pie filling as soon as I pulled the cork and as I poured. As for the rest of the nose I got overripe cranberry, red raspberry and orange juice with the pulp along with strong black tea, menthol cigarette, wet leaves, salty soy jerked beef and hints of black pepper and fresh mint. In the mouth blueberry, both black and tart cherry, raspberry all leading to kirsch with a hint of fresh tomato, along with sweet tobacco, charred steak, weak coffee laced with chocolate liquor followed by hints of worn leather and damp potting soil. On the bigger side of medium weight, with chalky tannin and a nice pop of bright acid that just seemed to fade.
Nice wine, that promised a lot, with a really pretty nose that the wine just couldn't deliver on. Ready to go but in the end disappointing and not a good value.

A bit of vanilla, spice. Fruit well balanced by acidity. Not so overt but very friendly flavor profile. Some new, some old world but more new. Drinks well day two. Let it rest a few more years in cellar to coax out some magic.

A “happy wine” for me, in a wonderful spot. I’m guessing this stays good for a long time, changes shape, and continues to offer something compelling. But the fruit/acid balance right now is just great.

Decanted 90 minutes. Still good, but the body was a bit thinner compared to last bottle. After 2 hours, a pretty nice finish emerged with spice and pepper notes. 89-90.
Update: Revisited on Day 2, and saw significant improvement. Deeper fruit and more depth. Still a good, lengthy finish, even better than Day 1. We wished we had saved more of the bottle for the revisit. 90-91.

It has been a little over a year and a half since I last tried this wine from this vintage. It has indeed benefitted from more time in the bottle. The nose is not all that pronounced, but the flavor in your mouth... delicious! It was decanted for 3 hours. The flavors included brambly drk blue & purple fruits along with a nice spice component. It was quite enjoyable. Will it get better with more time in the bottle? Probably. Sadly, this was my last of this vintage so I will never know.

Agree with some of the other recent notes that this is a bit one dimensional, and that the fruit fades on the second day leaving primarily tart flavors and acidity. Definitely preferred it on the first evening. The nose is nice enough.

Decanted 2 hrs. With my sincerest apologies to the Bedrock Dolinsek Ranch (which I love too) , but for my palate, The Bedrock Papera is the champion of the early drinking Heritage wines. This bottle was just cruising last night, incredibly generous fruit, I’d say in the red spectrum, but in the darker hue – so we’ll call it black raspberry and be good with it. But it was the incredible energy and focus on display that had me writing the first sentence on this TN, so driven and pure, yikes! Great throughout, and concludes with some tasty mint-esque things on the finish. Drink this now – its in the zone.
Last tasted this wine in June of 2018. It has definitely gotten better with some more age! My impression this tasting is that this wine is just going to be elegant and classic. It is not going to smack you in the face and make you say, "Wow!" The flavors are pure and unadulterated. We got an interesting combination of red fruits (ripe raspberry) and something much darker - maybe blackberries. It is drinking well right now, but as other CTers suggest, I suspect it will continue to improve. I have one bottle left, gonna do my best to leave it alone until 2020 or later.

This has come a long way in the past 6 months. PnP. Beautiful layered nose with pencil shavings, candied cherry, earth, on a dark fruit backbone. Stone fruit, graphite, tart notes. Quite a bit of tannin. Nice long finish. This wine screams for food.
I wish I’d have heeded my prior note and waiting longer to sample this again. But it is developing nicely. 2020 or bust on the rest.

Opened up after a few hours. Brambly blackberry, black raspberry, sweet cherry, earth, herbs, esp oregano, and a hint of olive on the nose. Red cherry, tart cherry, blackberry, earth, herbs, and some spice on the palate. Bright, juicy acidity, lightly grippy tannins, med-long finish. This was a really great wine, lots going on, bright, good with food. Yay, I just found out that I have another bottle.

Day 1, this was very tight and the nose muted - certainly needs more time in the cellar. Tannins were grippy and a little drying.
Left open for 24 hours and has come out of its shell a bit, although nose still mainly closed. On the palate, constantly dancing - raspberry, blackberry and black olive. While predominately Zin, I find it mostly reminds me of a restrained CA Syrah. Tannins have folded in nicely and I love the jolt of acidity that keeps this fresh. It honestly is really hard to describe these heritage wines as there is so much going on, and that is why I find them so intriguing.

This needs a couple more years and some food. Day 1 not very interesting to me with bright red fruit and not much nuance. Day 2 the nose came alive, the palate broadened, and the acid was perfectly in place. Looking forward to revisiting after 2020.

Decanted for about an hour before served with a fatty duck and rice dish; worked very well as a food wine. Opaque dark violet with ruby tinge. Nose brambly, hint of cassis and baking spices. Palate opens with dark fruits and hint of honey, some anise/herbal notes, nice acidity/brightness providing some balance. Definitely a more structured wine and perhaps just entering its drinking window; would highly recommend decanting if opening now. 92-93 pts

Opens with lots of red raspberry fruit. A mouth-filling wine. I find the tannins to be quite sedate. Love the acid level. That gives it a freshness. This is a very enjoyable wine at this point.

The best way I can describe this wine is to say that it was lean, it did not have a lot of depth... initially. I gave it a 4 hour decant, then it was consumed over 3 hours. It finally started to open up towards the end of the evening. I would suspect that this wine will benefit from more time in the bottle - as in 4 or more years. I also suspect that this bottle would have been better the second night. Oh well...
Minor gripe... I love what Morgan and Chris do at Bedrock. Their focus on heritage vineyards and field blends speaks to my sensibilities and to my palate. But I wish that more of their wines were more approachable earlier in their lives. I have more Bedrock wines than any other producer in my storage. But that is primarily because of wines like this one that need more age. Maybe that just means I need to figure out how to gain more storage space.

Very fruity with lots of zinfandel and what I think is petite sirah showing on the nose and in the mouth. Very well make with exemplary pureness. Not as deep tasting as I had hoped and somewhat one dimensional, but it was still tasting beautifully the second night and had more depth. It may just be too young to fully enjoy now.

I gave this a lot of air in a decanter - 2 hours before tasting and consumed over the course of 4+ hours. I don't get the brightness of red fruit. I get a bit of black/blue fruit, but more dominance of vanilla, minerality, bramble, earth, and spice. Maybe even cinnamon. Mouth-drying tannins. Pretty nice finish. I find just a bit of flatness in the mid-palate that stops me from rating it more highly.

The Papera Ranch Heritage has come along nicely over the past 12 months. Great aromas floral and forest floor notes. The texture is both supple and robust at the same time. Ripe berry flavors supplement by a bit of oak and minerality. Quite complex and tasty at this point. Hold for a while longer?

Per the others' notes, this is still very young and primary. Shows great potential. Very spicy with a nice core of fruit balanced by a savory finish. The usual Bedrock acidity is there but is not overdone. Better than the 2013? Hold for a few more years if you're patient.

Decanted for a little over two hours. This wine had very nice complexity and great balance of fruit/acid/tannins. Cherry, caramel, and a touch of vanilla with some soft white pepper notes on the long finish. Fruit notes accentuated with our pre-dinner fruit plate (sunshine and red raspberries, blackberries), but the wine also paired well with our pork dinner.

Vertical tasting of 2012, 2013, and 2014 Bedrock Papaera Ranch. All wines poured through aerator and into decanters 4 hours prior to tasting. All three are still young and not surprisingly the 2012 is drinking better than the '13 or '14. The 2012 had a tad more pepper than the others. The 2013 was a touch more "fruity" than the '12 or '14 and the '13 also showed a splash of strawberry or raspberry that the others didn't have. The color of the 2013 was slightly brighter too. All three have plenty of tannins suggesting more cellar time is advisable. Differences between the 3 wines were subtle and speak to the consistency of the vineyard. All four wine drinkers agreed these are well made wines worthy of the reviews scoring 91+ points. **The 2014 was really young compared to the others and needs more time in cellar; best guess is at least another 2 years.

I seldom agree so much with other reviews. First, it's young - very young. Aging it more would be great if you have patience. I did not decant, and 1-2 hours would have really been good. Next, berry/bramble fruit with earthiness, spice, and currant. Gotta be a [field] blend - not just zin. It's nowhere close to just zin. I looked back on the email notes and see it has a lot of Carignan, with other varietals also. The way I drank it tonight it was easily a 91, but I feel the wine is at least a 92 if you give it proper age and/or decant, so I rate it a 92.

Deep purple in color, and a spice-infused nose that takes a little time to open up. A young wine with a tightly would core that you can tell wants to open up but just needs more time. If consumed now, a proper decant is a must. With air, this opens up with bramble, spice, blackcurrant, and earthy undertones. A well structured wine.

Bedrock -- Cultural Warriors and Advocates (Sonoma): Compared to the 2012 a tad more forward, but that could merely be its youth. Both wines have a solid core of fruit and tannin, giving the wine both entertaining and contemplative dimensions. The aromatic nose is dark fruited at first, then brightens up with air into a realm of spice and cherry, and then fuses into a tannic amalgam that is as much about texture and structure as it is about fruit. Should be good for the long haul. Seems bigger than 2012, which I loved. 92-93

92-93 pts
